I never played the original but randomly played the demo …. And was instantly hooked. Sooo thankful that square put out the demo otherwise I might’ve never tried it !!! Thanks for watching friend 💯✅🙏
Loved this game so much, I played a bit of the original a decade ago but never made it all the way through. I bought this remake on release and it was wonderful! Agreed with almost everything you said (only exception is that formations can be reeeeeeeal nice in certain situations, like grinding exp, etc.). I highly, HIGHLY encourage you to give Star Ocean 3 a try, it was the first jrpg I actually finished and it still holds such a huge place in my heart even almost 15 years later. Earned a sub here :)

2:48 and 2:52 - the BEST transition!!!! That 'jump' sound used in Diakatana hehe! Love this remake, and was a fan of the original 2 back when! I also love my Doom and Quake - now to mash the two together by making a level inspired by somewhere found in Star Ocean 2R (besides Arlia which I already did)

I think the closeat thing to what you experienced here would be something from the Tales Of series. Tales of Symphonia or any of the recent ones may be to your liking. There are a lot of rpgs that will be quite different from this in terms of gameplay. So for your second jrpg ever, I would suggest finding something similar.
