I absolutely agree, this is by far one of my favorite rpg from the ps1 era. i remember buying this game with my brother, we didn't know anything about this serie at the time and found a gem of a game. One of us started the game with Claude and the other one with Rena, and a had a very different experience with the game, honestly I can't wait to play the remake!

Loved them they were for me in a way the inpersonation of evil with their cold cruelty. Not to mention when you learn the whole background in extra steps.

As cool as it is seeing the whole cast here, watching Rena pull off her martial arts dodging against Lucifer was SO satisfying to watch.

Hard to be manic when the game pauses with a spell cast

The spell pauses were good to get a moment to strategize and have all the enemies flinch for a moment.

​​@@Doomerang01Eh. It kind of is a spoiler. That's saying that every single main character survives the events of the game when that's not guaranteed going into the thing. We know they survive since we played the game, but it's not some sort of rule that characters can't die just because it's a Star Ocean game. People who have never heard of the game, and are just going through it now would be spoiled by that information.

@@ChadVigilante They messed around with a combat system that was nearly perfectly balanced, while keeping the same stats for enemies and the player characters. The first one that you notice is that the Knockback effect was no longer a Battle Skill but now integrated into the combat system. This meant that you COULD NOT TURN THE EFFECT OFF, which caused Killer Moves (what they now call Special Skills for the fighters) that relied on doing lots of little hits to quickly shove an enemy out of range and have most of the attack miss. Now, there is a way around the problem, and that is by getting the Battle Skill that causes you to attack enemies from behind and maxing it out, as that means you nearly always did so. This is because of a 'flaw' in the battle system that for some reason they kept despite using an entirely new game engine, and that is that the Knockback effect causes an enemy to move backwards rather than away from the attacker. This meant that if you hit them from behind it would cause them to get moved closer to you. Of course, the biggest flaw with this plan is the fact that your characters don't naturally run that much faster than the enemies, so you also need the Battle Skill that increases run speed to be maxed out (it also gives you a fairly decent chance of doing a near-teleport type movement to the position you'll be attacking from, which is extremely handy for quickly closing on distant enemies). It takes you several cities into the game to get both of those Battle Skills, and you'll have had to ignore using a couple of potentially really powerful Killer Moves until nearly the point that you naturally learn ones that make solid replacements for them. Next, they eliminated the Spell Merging. If two casters cast spells at the same time that were part of the same elemental pair (either same element or opposing elements, all 10 elements were paired) and at least one of the spells was an AoE spell they would 'merge'. When they were the same element they combined their power against all targets of BOTH spells. When fighting enemy casters this was a very easy means to end up in a quick, and sudden, game over as those enemy casters were usually immune to their own element (or worse, absorbed it) but you needed special armor to resist it (and frequently, with the power 'boost' from your caster, reducing damage by 50% usually wasn't enough to save anyone). However, if the spells were of apposing elements then the stronger spell would be weakened by the strength of the weaker spell and have the damage it did significantly reduced. This was an effective way of significantly reducing damage from bosses that liked to cast a lot of spells, and is central to fighting a few bosses in the mid-to-late game (without it you may need an extra 10-30 levels to defeat them, and no that figure isn't an exaggeration, some of those boss spells hit so hard that you needed that many extra levels to have the HP needed to take the hits, oh and the max level was much higher than 99). Mind you, if you had two casters in your battle party, and they cast spells from the same elemental pair, their spells would also merge (to some insanely spectacular damage values if they were the same element). Lastly, they heavily reworked the elements for magic. Instead of 10 different elements they changed it to 6, but kept all of the spells. This had the rather pronounced downside of 2 elements having significantly fewer spells to them than any of the others. It also messed with the spell balance of the recruitable casters, as now most of them barely had any elemental variety and it caused most of them to have two spells that quite literally filled the same role because they became the same element. And, some spells that were elemental, but didn't do damage, were changed to no longer have an element (spell merging did influence these spells). Although they didn't consistently shift all spells of a particular element they still had a poor balance to them anyhow. They even made a few non-elemental that originally had an element (it's a significant in-game lore thing that all spells that harm 'enemies' have an element, although Rena did learn one spell that aided allies and is listed with an element, while debuff spells were split between being non-elemental and elemental). Now, the demo is out, if you want to give it a try, and they've notably changed how the Skills and Battle Skills are acquired, as well as some changes to how Battle Skills and Special Skills are strengthened. I did notice that they are still only working with 6 elements, but I'm too short on time left on that demo save to see how magic works now with Celine so I'm going to have to do a second save where I skip through all of the story dialog to get some serious playtime with her. I'll only be able to learn one of her AoE spells before hitting the demo's level cap, and I'm unsure if there are any enemies that cast spells of the right elements up through the final area of the demo to see if spell merging can happen or not, but I'm definitely going to give it a check. I also noticed that they still have Rena's basic offensive spell listed as being an Earth element spell, like in Second Evolution, so I'm not all that confident that Spell Merging will be around, but at least they got rid of the inherent Knockback effect.

@ChadVigilante Yeah. The battle system is even more involved. I love that godspeed is immediately available. But universe is crazy on Claude and nigh impossible on Rena. I had to train her to level 10 just to beat Allan. Thankfully you can get The call in characters before the boss in Cross Cave and retries let you keep your bonus circle.

disappointing they used the same sprites though. but i didn't even know this was in the works so i got nothing to complain about

@@Derpsickle To be honest i think seeing those sprites hits different for me. I feel so much nostolgia towards those.. I think new ones could have ruined that a bit for me, but im sure there will be mods with updated sprites in the future! :)

I will take all the physical releases we can get. Dragon Quest Infinity Strash not getting a NA physical seems odd enough, so I guess we have to be thankful where we can get it. Baten Kaitos Remaster so far is also not getting an NA physical release, but Bandai Namco tends to be lazier than even Square Enix when they do remasters ie. Removing English VA
