I remember this after the tragic events from 9/11, first time for an Australian to get goosebumps from the amazing version of the Star Spangled Banner. We Australians will always stand by our American cousins.
The theology is kinda wierd, but their core ideas are family centered and focus on solid morals bringing people up. Greatly kind people, and yes the choir is beautiful!
Agree 💯. As a visitor in 2017 in SLC on a road trip I can say. The visiting of the office building and all the other places of this area was incredible. I had a warm welcome and a 5 hours!!! personal sightseeing tour with so much interesting information. One of my best experience I ever had. And now one ask me to change my religion or neither I received afterwards some request. So respect.....
A repeat is an emphasis. This is the message to our enemies and to ourselves: we may be torn and wounded, yet the Star Spangled Banner waves on, the ideal is still alive. The sound of the choir stirs the real music in the heart.
This was the same arrangement they used in at the Opening Ceremony in Atlanta, 1996, but much more emotional this time. I was there that evening. It was a cathartic moment....there was not a dry eye in the stadium. The focus was on the WTC flag as this occurred almost 5 months to the day of the 9/11 attacks, and we as a country were still reeling. Notice they didn't raise the stadium flag until the end of the CODA (the repeat), and it was wonderful and an extremely appropriate way to respect BOTH flags. And no divas were involved to doctor it or twirl it or personalize it to their own styles.
eddie mag I was there that evening too and there are no words for the reverence in that arena for that flag and for that anthem and our nation. This olympics was such a healing experience not only for the US but for the world after 9-11.
The arrangement was done by the late Robert Shaw, longtime music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Shaw conducted the arrangement at the Atlanta opening ceremony, and passed away sometime later.
I love that they sang it as written all the way through and then only on the coda broke out into multi-part harmony. That really draws the emphasis to the long tradition of constancy and the contrasts is with the bright future that will not be dimmed by such an act.
I was present at these Games...absolutely incredible in person. I have never been in such a large crowd and 'heard' silence like this. Quiet sniffles around us at the conclusion...
I was down at the medals plaza that night doing a dress rehearsal for medals ceremonies starting the next day. Would have killed to have been there in person.
There were tears of healing, and you can feel a reverence and unity there…..and God was there….thank God for the righteous in America who serve us every day.
Our National Anthem doesn't sound like that? Stravinsky's national anthem in by far on of, if not the, best arrangement out there. The Mormon Tabernacle choir does an amazing job and I love how the last few lines of the verse are repeated to close it out.
Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
That Olympics turned a spirit of mourning into joy. We weee united in our love ❤️ for America, and we will never forget 9/11…..with reverence for those who died, and for those who saved so many.
I remember watching this in 2002 and the way they sang the American was something very special for the world to witness and hear how awesome The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Sounds when singing a very patriotic hymn 😊😊😊
First that was not a "repeat of the final verse" but a repeat of the chorus. This is the final verse of the star spangled banner: O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation. Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.' And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
There is no official arrangement of the Star-Spangled Banner, as far as I know; therefore, the poster's remark about how our national anthem "doesn't really sound like that" is strictly his opinion. There used to be a website (it may still be there) that presented a history of the Star-Spangled Banner and demonstrated how it was played through the years. Someone from the 1800's could just as easily have said, "The Star-Spangled Banner doesn't really sound like that."
I like it - the coda of the first (and only verse sung) was a nice touch. I'd rank it far and away superior to some of the renditions I hear in NBA games (Fergie, Aguilera, Bolton).
There is different arrangements for the SSB. Tho this is fine. Sometimes people make the anthem into a jazz or rock song, I like jazz and rock, but the SSB sounds better as a big band/march/or choir

Sorry to disappoint you, supremes ballard, but this was also pre-recorded. We were singing along, but we did not have microphones anywhere near us. There's no way that you can ensure good audio quality in a setting like this, especially for a live TV event. This and all of the music that we performed in the ceremony was recorded with the Utah Symphony in Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City a few weeks prior to the opening of the games.
+Jeffrey Buchanan Patton Not sure what you're asking. It happened just as I said. As a member of the choir I was in the recording sessions and the opening ceremony. It was an incredible experience.
Lee Zurligen Well, that was a surprise, though. Nice job for the recording, anyway. You know, this arrangement of Star Spangled Banner made me cry like every time I heard it. It makes me feel like I'm an American sometime.
+Jeffrey Buchanan Patton Yes, this is definitely my favorite arrangement and one of the most moving presentations I've ever seen. I love how the flag rises and reaches the top exactly when the music ends. Many rehearsals went into the production of this ceremony. We were there for two of them on previous evenings. The weather was very cold, but for the actual event it had warmed up considerably and there was a light snowfall. Just magical. I'll never forget it.
Same thing for President Donald Trump's inauguration. The full choir recorded in the Tabernacle and then a smaller group went to Washington, D.C. and lip-synched for the cameras. Very typical for live events where you have too many variables (wind, rain, etc.) to guarantee clean audio.
I mean, I can't disprove your statement to your satisfaction if you don't accept that Obama has Christian religious preferences and you more than likely think he was born in Kenya or something like that, but since you're listening to a Stravinsky arrangement of this piece, I can at least tell you to be accepting of belief systems and cultures that are not your own.
