It's still DOScember, so let's have some DOS fun! DOS has always presented interesting quirks when trying to get games running in it's environment. These quirks were often frustrating! Star Trek: A Final Unity was not immune to these - specifically when it came to adjusting the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files to tweak memory settings. Let's go over the installation, some configuration adjustments and some gameplay of this awesome title from 1994!

I loved this game for it had a typical "Teaser" sequence and the fade-in/out title at 16:20, just like any real episode we watched on TV. Many challenges in the game, including the final choice and Picard's epilogue, were very philosophical.

@@TheRetroRecall I even bought the game twice: first the licensed version in Taiwan with translated manuals, but the translator was clearly NOT a Trek fan; many technobabble were poorly translated. When I visited US and saw one on the shelf (IIRC at a Tower Record) with its distinctive trapezoidal box I bought it immediately and still have it today.

That's awesome to hear. To this day I don't know what I did with my original, but I was young and didn't seem to care haha. I'm happy I found the copy that I did.

I seem to remember I found out after playing about a third of way through this I got stuck on a story bug. But couldnt find a patch for the game the early internet was not great for walkthroughs. I remember this took sometime setting up but was so excited to get it think i learned a lot about running dos on my dads pentium pro 180.

Niiice :D Just replayed ST: A Final Unity not so long ago (well, maybe a year or two ago?) on my "cardboard box" Pentium retro computer, and it's still pretty good! Great memories here! Cheers, and thanks for the quality content! edit: i can swear i have the same CD Writer Plus model :))

Yeay! My saving grace on real hardware was memmaker, included in Dos 6.22, and replacing the build in dosextender(DOS/4GW) with DOS/32. Note that the information database gets expanded over the course of the game!
@TheRetroRecall
@TheRetroRecall 6 месяцев назад
Yes, I read up a bit on DOS/32. Seems to be the solution that is used most for DosBox. Fortunately all I needed was the emm386 extension and I was good to go, however I can see that being a solution for other challenges. Thanks!!

I always found this game really impressive as a kid, but yeah, it was notoriously hard to get to work properly. I played it for a while with no sound before figuring it out, and had to spend hours on a tech support line to a Dutchman to figure out how to get the mouse drivers to work.

I freaking loved this game as a kid, it's awesome. I struggled to play through it and I don't think I ever managed to complete it until I rediscovered it as a late teen and probably used a guide. I do remember struggling to get it running on XP (didn't know about DOSBOX) and eventually installed Windows 98 on my P4 1.5Ghz, using some dubious guide to install 98 after XP. Did you ever play the Star Trek: Generations game made by Microprose? This one is a Windows based game and really struggles in anything that isn't 9x. So DOSBOX is out, XP is very buggy and Vista++ is almost impossible. So it's really been left by the wayside in terms if modern play
@TheRetroRecall

If you already have both himem and emm386 loaded, why not to load all device drivers HIGH as well? (DEVICEHIGH=blah) You have 130kB of unused upper memory there, make use of it!

I remember having that, its probably still on a shelf... There was one bit I just couldn't get past. Might dig it out and try it again, not sure if I should continue watching because ... spoilers. Thing is, what shall I play it on... shall I rebuild an old 486VLB, or maybe my P133 Win98 could run it in DOS mode Minimum System Requirements: 486DX 33Mhz processor or higher 8 MB RAM (DOS), 16 MB RAM (Win 95) MS-DOS 5.0 or higher operating system SVGA VESA Graphics SoundBlaster

@@TheRetroRecall Survived the Varta, not sure if I will CR2032 convert it, or wondering if a pack of 3x AAA NiMH would do wired to it. It has a DX4 100 and a choice of putting in a CL5428 VLB - or another card I've had lying around since buying it way back at the dying days of VLB - A Diamond Stealth 64 VRAM (S3 964) - fast card in both DOS and Windows. The P133 is an IBM PC330, was 75MHz and I just happened to have a 133 spare

That 486 sounds awesome. It's possible that board has an external battery header to connect a coincell holder to it. If you switch the jumper, you can bypass having to solder a diode in the setup to prevent charging.

Hahah, totally lost it at the bridge FMV .... it is a FMV, where they could have used the actors and stuff, but they used such a cheap CGI generation of it. Classic DOS gaming ... never change 🙂

@@TheRetroRecall Totally yes, and it was awesome at the time. Full motion video decompression and display direct to a screen buffer is a crazy amount of work for a 486/Pentium to do. At this stage, didn't even have video card overlay surfaces (to handle scaling and colour space conversion) to help accelerate any video playback. But yeah, found it hallarious because they had all the actors there doing voice acting yet CGIed everything else. I understand why, but the cheezyiness still got me!
