Star Trek Balance of Terror (part 1 of 7) TOS (The Original Series)  

Saw the original at age 6, I'm 60 and the original Trek is still the best. You can keep your special FX, lens flare Abrams, there's no substitute for first rate writing, story telling, and characters.

galaxyman2007dtl: At :34 Sulu says they are at maximum speed.(Enterprise 1701 was capable of Warp 8 which is 512x the speed of light.) At :39 the crewman says that at that velocity,they are 8 minutes away from outpost 4. At warp 8,It would take the Enterprise 1701 two minutes to make it to the edge of interstellar space from earth's orbit which is 123 astronomical units away or 123x the distance from the earth to the sun.(11.4 billion miles) So they are roughly 23 billion miles away from outpost 4 or 246x the distance between the earth and the sun.(246 astronomical units) Interstellar space is the place where the sun's constant flow of material and magnetic field stop affecting its surroundings.

galaxyman2007dtl: The Enterprise D from Star Trek TNG could travel at warp 9.6 which translates to 1909x the speed of light. It would take the Enterprise D 32 seconds to travel to the Heliopause from earth. So then traveling at warp 9.6, it would take the Enterprise D one minute to travel to outpost 4.

It’s interesting. Someone asked me the other day what is my favorite TOS episode. I really had to pause. The truth is, upon reflection, that I don’t have one. But this is certainly one of my favorites

The cast back then were in their 30's to 40's . I'm 62 now and I'm older now than the cast was back then, Strange feeling 🤔

​@@andrewanderson3572 I'm just about to enter my 20s so I thought it was weird how my perspective of them is shifting from how a child views "grown ups" to seeing them more as peers. Interesting to see the perspective from the other side of things.

Lots of people dump on his "Sh-acting" but he absolutely nailed the Kirk character from day one. As did the rest of the cast.

@@00bikeboy ..I often wondered if Jeffery Hunter aka ' Captain Christopher Pike ' had stayed on as Captain, would the role of the ' captain ' be as iconic as Shatner have made it to be to this day? ..

@@pallen49 Great question! It never occurred to me to consider that. I guess the only clue is to compare their respective pilot episodes. Pike had one or two acton scenes in which he was quite good, so did Shatner of course. I think what (Hunter) Pike was lacking was a McCoy and a mature Spock. Nimoy hadn't quite formed Spock in the first pilot, but would he have eventually got there? I think so, Nimoy was dedicated to the character. Scotty was there too. So maybe it comes down to the doctor's role. The chemistry between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy is undeniable. Would Pike have made Star Trek great with Dr. Boyce (John Hoyt)? Hoyt was a very solid actor, but it's hard for me to imagine anyone other than DeForest Kelly conjuring up that magical chemistry between himself, Kirk and Spock. But then again, maybe it would have been better(?!)... Damn you ponchai allen, that's a tough one! Tell you what, I'll go through the portal from The City on the Edge of Forever, engineer the change, and we'll see how it plays out...

Yeah, the audio sounds are sort of superfluous. But the stories and characters are timeless. You got it, man.

@Charles Martel even modern star trek and other sci-fi medias still makes use today of FTL communication. So what you are saying makes no sense

@Charles Martel So is travelling faster than light. Most sci-fi stories would be pretty boring if know scientific limits were forced on the stories; e.g: no faster than light, no transporters, etc.. The show does get around you concern by using the plot device of "sub-space" communication, basically a hyperspace for communication channels.

Actually a lot of the 'technology' was well ahead of its time..! Considering it was the 60s - loads of things materialised from the 90s onwards!

I'm only rewatching this because of Strange New Worlds. Most thrilling star trek series in the last 20 years.

This was a nice nostalgic callback. TBH the original series was great and was underrated back in the day. It was ahead of its time and frankly should have ran for more seasons. Keep in mind back in 60s television isn't where it's at today and the variety of shows were limited so Star Trek was a diamond in the rough. There was nothing else like it back then.

This is, after all, the eighth episode of Star Trek, ever, to be produced. That's in case the title of the episode isn't clear enough, casting the Cold War's clinical "balance of power" as an invitation to destruction, a policy of futures cut short, the sheer momentum of senseless death, looming in the freezing night.

He was a pain in the we and should have been relieved but he did make interesting points when it came to the security of the ship

"There war,Not yours,Don't forget it!"Is what Kirk told Styles and yet he still carried that same grudge toward Spock.

Oh man the original was awesome. I grew up with Star Trek and the stories were great and it was severely underrated and under appreciated. It was simply ahead of its time. But remember back then sci-fi was just starting to take off and this was the only show of its kind back in the day. This was in the era of mostly Westerns and war dramas so Star Trek was a diamond in the rough and deserves more seasons. But audiences haven't caught on yet.

Many of the themes have come to pass as well. Kinda prophetic, huh? Makes you wonder where they got the ideas for their episodes.

Science fiction? I can assure you it's not.

Balance of Terror was one of his best episodes.

Well you can't say that. The hee haw ride'm high guns ablaze cowboy approach isn't going to build an empire when you're quick on the draw. But they added this nice twist where sometimes you need to fire. ☝️

Even old-fat Kirk can still kick ass and old Picard looks and sounds like he belongs in a nursing Home

Agreed - and Quality of Mercy was a great tribute to it. Plus it did a good job underscoring why kirk was the right man for the job on that day: despite the orders declaring ship and outposts expendable, despite prohibition against entering the zone, the situation was much like The Vulcan Hello - the correct answer was to ignore orders and normal federation philosophy and come in shooting. Kirk did, Pike didn't.

A true classic. The original had great stories and characters and dialogue. Back in the day CGI and even sci-fi tech wasn't so advanced so that's why they had to rely on good stories with great characters.

@@locarno24 Well to be fare most sci-fi tropes would be to seek peace and that it's better to work together then destroy each other. That's called be the better man approach. But they added a twist to the cliche where it's better to come all guns ablaze. 😆

As he did for the rest of the original series and original series movies, especially the third one, where Kirk put his career in jeopardy to resurrect Spock

Mr. Spock was Capt. Kirk’s best friend therefore Kirk would’ve had Spock’s back.

Strange worlds have a lot of nice callbacks to the original.

Yes at least we will always have the original to remember and cherish. And to inspire us. And l agree with you bout Star Trek Continues. I like it allot. Star Trek Phase ll also.

@RedneckSpaceMan I normally don't like milking an Institutional cow when it really shouldn't give any more milk and am usually very cynical about fan fiction like ST continues but having watched a few episodes , I would say those guys did a bangup job in what could have been a total fiasco.

The zoom into faces is super cheesy and the lighting makes it look terrible.

And to compare this cheap production series with a Shakespearean play is ridiculous, don't you think?

They modernized the story but the original was the first. Back in the day TV shows were focused on great stories and awesome characters. 👍

@@Folker46590 Well it's all relative. The original is still the gold standard but if you compare discovery and Picard then you'll appreciate how good strange new worlds is. The other series just misses the mark.

Yes. And this episode shows how well the best of Star Trek worked with and around its budget. Prosthetic ears cost time and money... so the non-speaking Romulans wear helmets that evoke the Ancient-World cultures to match the sword-and-sandal lines for their superiors. The set for the enemy bridge was a one-episode construction on the studio's dime, one that had to be torn down after a few days... so the Romulans stand at their posts, suggesting hardened soldiers manning a weapon with an engine tacked on.

I didn't even notice it. (I don't usually notice music in movies or TV shows. I'm kind of oblivious in that way.) But going back and listening, I agree!
