Happy Star Trek Day! "Star Trek: The Original Series" premiered 55 years ago on September 8, 1966. In honor of this, please enjoy this video highlighting Lucille Ball's history with the science-fiction show. How did she save the show? If it wasn't for Lucy, the show probably wouldn't have ever been produced. I'm having a conversation with you! Remember to like, share, and subscribe to my channel for more videos like this.

When Trekkies talk about Star Trek they almost always mention Shatner, Nimoy, and (of course) Roddenberry. Barely anyone talks about Lucille Ball's contribution to Star Trek. Well, I Love Lucy, and so should just about any other Trekkie out there.

But the story isn't true.

In a future Star Trek series there should be a ship named after Lucille Ball; USS Lucille NCC-80611 80611 = August 6th, 1911 = Lucille Ball's date of birth

Lucy could act, dance and make us laugh. Above all, she was a shrewd business woman who could play ball with the big boys. If you loved anything about Star Trek, you thank Gene Roddenberry for creating it and Lucille Ball for saving it.

The thing about Lucy is, during I Love Lucy she played a bit of a ditz. Funnily enough, she was probably the smartest person in the room.

Lucy was the President of Desilu Studios at the time. Her development team had been striking out for years trying to get a pilot series picked up by one of the tv networks when they came up with the Star Trek idea. It originally went to CBS who rejected it, then over to NBC. They showed some interest but were put off by the production costs and not thrilled with some of the actors. The producers figured they were beat but the development director asked them to pitch it to Lucy one more time, and then be honest with her about its chances and ask her to use one of her silver bullets, call the network President and tell him how important it was to her that Star Trek be picked up by NBC. According to legend, that's what hooked him and why they purchased Star Trek. Ball ended up using a lot of Desilu development money (mostly all from CBS) to help defray the high cost of making Star Trek. What wasn't known then was the Ball had told a few people that she was going to sell Desilu. At that time Desilu had one series that it owned on the air: her The Lucy Show. In order to get a high price for the sale of Desilu she needed a few series actually in production and owned by them on the air. It worked, Desilu managed to get Star Trek, Mission: Impossible and Mannix all owned by her sold to the networks before she accepted the Paramount offer to buy Desilu. Industry experts at the time figured the 3 new series added about $8,000,000 to the eventual $12,000,000 sale price.

It was understanding that Lucy's 60% share amounted to about $12 million but the total sale price of Desilu was $17 million. The land alone was probably worth that much.

Lucy has nothing to do with saving or even starting Star Trek. This rumor started when a blog ran a story confusing her when she tried to save Mannix on CBS. Ball exerted pressure on CBS the season before Mannix to ensure that Mission: Impossible (1966-73) made it to the airwaves

This is known in Trek circles as "The Lucy Myth". While it's certainly true that she owned the studio and could have killed the show if she'd wanted to, she had no personal interest in Trek, and didn't even know what it was at first, and after she did she had zero involvement in it. Lucy knew how to delegate. NBC asked for a second pilot because they really wanted a good sci-fi show to compete with Lost in Space. Here's how Herb Solow, the guy who actually sold Trek to the network described her involvement: "All the top executives received copies of our pilot scripts to read, review with others, and comment on. I personally walked the Star Trek pilot script into Lucy's dressing room and handed it to her. "Lucy, this is the Star Trek pilot script. There'll be lots of changes, so if you have any comments, let me have them, because there'll be ample time to implement them." Lucy never mentioned the script, and the day the completed pilot was screened for NBC on the West Coast, I walked into Lucy's dressing room to tell her NBC's reaction. The pilot script was still there, apparently untouched. -- Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, pp. 21-22.

I knew that her company was involved in Star Trek, but i never the commitment she made for that series. I wonder why didn't she ever make an appearance in the show.

Don't get it twisted though. Another reason that the show had been initially rejected was because it featured a black female bridge officer who had authority. We love you Nichelle Nichols. That BS excuse about it being too similar to Lost in Space was just an excuse.

OMG, someone needs to make Lucy's version of Star Trek, with the USO performers! I love that her imagination went there when she heard the title "Star Trek", lol. Stars, on a trek, what else could that title mean lol! Lucy was the queen.

The USO story should be worked into a future episode of a Star Trek series where a Starfleet crew saves a group of Federation performers who were kidnapped by hostile aliens after entertaining Starfleet personnel.
