Velma gets renewed and Lower Decks is cancelled? There is no justice.

Lower decks was the most clever show I'd seen in a very long time and was the reason I started getting back into ST again. It's literally a love letter to the fans that rewards us for having watched decades of ST. It's a shame they're ending the show I look forward to the most.

if the fanbase raised a scene about prodigy being cancelled, then one of the most popular trek series being cancelled is going to create a backlash the likes of which paramount has never seen

I am heartbroken, lower decks got my wife and daughter in Star Trek, and it became one of our sit down and family viewing. It genuinely felt like a natural continuing of TNG/DS9/VOY. So heartbroken. Here's hoping netflix might come to the rescue again. As for what gets renewed in American TV from what I understand, from a friend, is that episodes on average episodes need at least 1 mill views to be considered and that each season ups its viewing by a percentage and must be able to reach to a wider audience. That's what 1 of friends who works in TV production tells me.

We needed at least 6 seasons of Lower Decks so they could finish their season title poster gags recreating each of the original Star Trek movies.

Such a shame. Lower Decks was a gift for all of us that have stayed with Trek through thick and thin. It’s absolutely my favorite since the original series. Let’s hope it’s picked up on another platform. It deserves to be. There is such a lot of love goes in to the making of this.

This breaks my heart. LD was a beautiful, engaging, compelling, funny love letter to Trek history while creating memorable characters and adding to the wider lore. We'll miss you, Ceritos!

While it appears that a five-season run seems like the new standard that Paramount has set for streaming era Trek shows, I REALLY hope that Lower Decks finds a way to keep going after season five.

And it’s not like they’re creating 26 episodes, or more, per season anymore. They’re only doing 10 per season. And we wait much longer between seasons. So I have a tough time feeling sorry for the greedy executives of the studios, networks, and streaming services.

The financial problems at Paramount have nothing to do with the cast, crew or fans of Star Trek; pick any show. It's a failure of corporate executives who couldn't plot their way out of a wet paper bag with a functional personal transporter.

Not going to lie, my delight that Strange New Worlds is getting renewed is completely overshadowed by how gutted I am about Lower Decks. I feel the show's writing was just starting to properly hit it's stride. As you said Sean, it only got better and better. And yeah, you're right that T'linn was just starting to be an involving and intriguing character. Lower Decks has been such a breath of life for the additional franchise material and in doing something so different from everything else in Star Trek's canon, it certainly has created a whole new generation of fans who will rediscover what the older fans fell in love with.

Lower Decks makes the Star Trek universe feel so alive. The way it interacts with all the established lore in such a fun and self-aware way gave me so much hope for its future... Hopefully, it does get picked up

Lower Decks is the show my wife and I can enjoy together. I’m a lifelong Trekkie and I’ve shared it with her, but while she’s enjoyed specific episodes, movies, and scenes, Lower Decks is the first series we’ve been able to love together.

Because they release series on very limited streaming platforms that are extremely restricted access they miss out on MILLIONS of viewers.

I'm elated that SNW is already green lit for a 4th season but quite saddened about LD being axed. I've become so attached to all of the characters from Lower Decks and only to have them unceremoniously snatched away is a travesty.

Someone and one of the Facebook groups did mention, and I think it’s very valid for them to say, to actually send a written letter to the person who signs off on the programming. Their reasoning was because Paramount could just easily ignore any petition that’s online as they already knew that it was very likely people would start petitioning to save lower decks . Currently, I I am unable to search up that address very readily, but you should be able to find it either in the Star Trek lower decks group or one of the other groups

I was rewatching season 2 Lower Decks when I found out the show was ending, extremely disappointed we’re only getting one more season.

NNNOOOOOOOO- we need more seasons of lower desks. It’s the only good Trek show that has been aired since Voyager. It’s funny, relatable, and in the same vain as the original shows. Please, please, please keep it on the air.

Out of all the New Trek out there, Lower Decks was hands down my favorite. To end this so soon is just a travesty!!! This was the one that brought back the great season ender cliffhangers that Next Gen and DS9 made years before.

Paramount… I hate to tell you now, but ST Lower Decks was the ONLY streaming show you have where I rewatched all of the episodes multiple times over and over again.

Lower Decks kept Trek alive during the pandemic, when the cast was recording audio at home (sometimes in the closet) and sending it in. It saved Star Trek, the episodes were rewatchable (unlike the serialized Discovery which was a single 15-hour episode and a single 14-hour episode) and the prospect of a Pike spinoff was somewhere between a wish and a hope. It was the candle in the darkness that kept Paramount from falling into the pit, extinguished by fickle winds of change.

After the crappiest day, I had to come home to this news about Lower Decks. Thanks for always bringing us the latest Trek news...good and bad.

It may have something to do with the fact that Season 4 wasn't on Prime Video after Seasons 1-3 were (at least in the UK, note sure about elsewhere), I'm sure I'm not the only one who's fed up with more and more streaming services launching and shows moving to them.

I hate that Lower Decks is ending at Season 5, I understand it's hard to keep an animated series going that long, but there is so much they could still do. It has been one of my favorite Trek series not only of the new era, but of all time. It's always been a great blend of the easter eggs and homages, but also exciting new stories to expand the lore. I hope we can get at least some big Lower Decks movies to end the series on a high note. I am excited to know we are getting more Strange New Worlds, which is good because otherwise, we'd be losing all of our New Trek content. Also, we need more Ellen Janeway.

Lower decks damn well better get a movie. Even if just for streaming.

I’ve still not watched all of S4 of Lower Decks, and the reason is that I feel like I have to go back and watch previous seasons to get all the references, and maybe pay more attention to references in general. I need an annotated version of LD, like pop-up videos (if anyone remembers what that was).

Since our son was born 16 months ago, I managed to get my partner into Star Trek (mainly because my son loves the theme tunes). But she couldn't get into lower decks because she's not a Trekkie yet, however the crossover episode of strange new worlds made her literally fall of the sofa laughing!😂

I’m pretty certain ratings have NOTHING to do with Lower Deck’s cancellation…Paramount+ has been steadily PURGING Star Trek from their service DELIBERATELY! They had hoped Star Trek would bring subscribers to their streaming service but the field is overly full of streaming services so Paramount+ is slowly dying off…with Star Trek now being their sacrificial lamb, presuming that their own leadership hasn’t just decided to become hostile to the franchise! This is ON PURPOSE and not at ALL due to ratings WAKE UP SEAN!!!!!!!

My family and I are heart broken to hear that Paramount is dropping another amazing Star Trek show, but hopeful that it will get picked up on another platform. Additionally, very happy to hear about another season of SNW, but anything could happen with the turmoil on Paramount. 🖖

Like everyone else here, while I’m delighted that Stranger New Worlds is green lit for a fourth season, I’m sad about the loss of Lower Decks. Please bring on the Save LD petitions!

My husband and I rewatch Lower Decks constantly - this has really saddeed us. I hope us fans can convince the powers that be to pick it up again, because it is just such an amazing series. It truly is a love letter to the Star Trek universe.

*Important but often overlooked point:* We don't get much Trek these days because of short seasons. TNG, DS9, and VOY typically had 26 episodes per season whereas Discovery has 13 and Lower Decks only has _10!!_ By the time Lower Decks concludes its 5th season, it will have had fewer than _half_ the number of episodes as _two seasons_ of TNG or DS9. And since the episodes are half as long, that's _one quarter_ of the Trek as-an-entire-series. We are getting shafted.

I am sad that the show ENDED SOON THAN IT WAS. This was my introduction to Star Trek and it's a very great show in general. Sad that's ending but at least it didn't get cancelled for a tax write off. I hope Season 5 will bring a satisfying closure to the show.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO IT'S THE FIRST STAR TREK SHOW I EVER WATCHED IT INTRODUCED ME TO THE STAR TREK UNIVERSE

The cancellation of Lower Decks is devastating me. That show was like... the thing I most looked forward to and it got me through really hard times.

This one hit hard. Lower Decks is my mental health boost. I watch episodes daily. I tweet daily about the episodes (great takes and references). If anyone says its not Trek, they are not paying attention. Case in point is Season 2 Episode 10: First First Contact. It is classic Trek story telling and the animation is top notch. Lower Decks is everything Trek. (I ramble, but I care).

Ending Lower Decks and leaving only 1 ongoing Trek show (with only 1 additional season) is a surefire way to get me to unsubscribe from Paramount+. Then again I've attempted to do that twice this year and they've given me 5 free months so far. They know the writing is on the wall. I'll buy the Lower Decks media and let the subscription go.

As much as I despise the commercial TV model at least keeping a show on the air was more about everyone being home to watch a show when it aired as opposed to trying to keep half a dozen streaming service subscriptions and still having to watch the episode the moment it comes out or it doesn't seem to count.

I think we need to get it out there that this has been canceled and not just coming to a natural end; I'm sure most are like me and just thought the creators were ending the show not that it was canceled by the network based on the original report. I didn't know it was actually canceled till I read the interview with Jack Quaid last night where he talked about hoping that the show found a new home. It almost feels like they purposefully didn't use the word canceled because they didn't want to get the rage from the fans like they did with Prodigy.

I think Paramount are shooting themselves in the foot getting rid of all three of these shows. I have never encountered a single person who pays for Paramount+ that isn't a trekkie. There's nothing else of value on there. If they keep cancelling the shows Trek fans love, those fans will rage quit their service. I already did in protest, and sent an email to customer support saying I specifically why. I don't know if that will make any difference, but it's good to have it on record. Honestly, it's like these people don't want our money.

I was super bummed when I heard the news but after watching some LD clips from the SNW crossover, I'm now super sad too. I hope we can save the show but assuming it's not going to work, I'm really going to miss this show. I've got so much enjoyment out of it. It filled a niche in the Trek universe that I didn't know needed filling and has made it so much richer.

Lower decks is one of the best Star Trek series out there and i doubt that the viewership is that bad to be canceled for a good reason. Didn't they recently make a point of appreciating animation and then they canceled all of their animated trek series... according to sites i have looked at the ratings and viewership is high. This made me feel very sad and angry, it's great about Strange new worlds but it does mean we won't have a show to continue after nemesis.... again!

Since you already mentioned the commanding moustache... "So, you have a new Star Trek series for me?" "Yes Sir, I do. It's an animated show about a spaceship and the adventures of the lower decks crew!" "And who would that be?" "Mariner, Boimler, Tendi..." "Oh, they are from that other thing!" "Yes Sir, they are." "But we cancelled that show, how can we bring it back at the same time?" "That's super easy, barely an inconvenience." "Oh really?" "Yeah. See, that cancelled show was really popular, so the revival will generate a ton of money" "Earning cash by resurrecting the dead is tight!" One can only hope.

This is not just about Star Trek viewership. Streaming services are struggling. Paramount may be seeking a buyout or a partner. Even Strange New Worlds is not entirely safe.

No one has paramount plus. They should have cooperated with Disney and Netflix right away. Or have it at paramount for a year and then parallel on Netflix Amazon or Disney

Dude.. thats not funny. April fools was half a month ago. Its time to accept the reality. Paramount wants out of the trek game because CGI is more expensive than horses. We were NEVER getting Legacy. This is going to cut us down to a show no one wants and a 3rd prequel we dont actually need (and causes more canon problems than it will ever even try to fix) These have been bleak days for trek for the last year + EDIT: Also remember, Prodigy has NOT been saved. Airing mostly completed episodes does NOT count as saved unless we get a season 3. Otherwise its just a funeral being conducted on someone elses property. EDIT 2: It SHOULD have at least completed the TOS set of 6 seasons to represent 6 TOS films. PLEASE dont leave us on Shak Aree. Give us our undiscovered country. They could KINDA do this by increasing the number of episodes to 16, then divide that "season" into 2 halves as is common now. Then the first half could be for 5 and the back half could be for 6.

The possibility of Tendi appearing in Legacy (~23 years after Lower Decks)... Imagine _things happen_ and she's more like her first mentor, Doctor T'Ana

The only thing that would cheer me up now would be an announcement that Academy has been cancelled and replaced with Legacy or at least be amended to be in the Picard era as opposed to the Discovery era. :(

It took me a couple of attempts to warm to Lower Decks, but thanks to this channel I gave it a third go. And I absolutely love it. It's a tragedy that it's ending. You have to wonder what the hell is going on with the Paramount Execs.....

With Discovery in it’s 5th and final season, lower decks only going up to 5 seasons, perhaps legacy treks 7 season standard is changing to a 5 season standard for new trek. :(

Glad for SNW, sad for LD. Lower Decks grew on me. At first I was put off by the cavalier aspects of the characters, but over time it began to work for me, largely due to the constant Trek canon references and inside humor and the characters 'maturing' a wee bit. Sorry to see it canceled. But we still have one more season to enjoy. Strange New Worlds, IMO, is the best Trek series in a very long time. And that musical episode still has a huge foothold in my brain and heart. I've watched it several times, and watched the individual songs on YT countless times. I've had to be very judicious about listening any more because once I do I cannot get it out of my mind for days. As Uhura said, "ear worm".

I’d never seen Star Trek before Lower Decks. That show got me curious, and while I don’t think I’ll ever call myself a Trekkie, I have branched into the other iterations. After Lower Decks I got into SNW and I’m starting Discovery. I will say if the big driving factor is ratings, having content confined to only one streaming service doesn’t help with exposure.

TBF, the more powerful metrics would be how many signups to paramount+ did lower decks produce. How many cancelled accounts did it produce once the season ended. If you really want Paramount to weigh the star trek community more heavily you should only subscribe to the platform when a new season kicks off, then immediately cancel the moment you finish the season. Money making metrics matter, so hit them where they make an effect

I would like to say I really liked Lower Decks and the character development was spot on. I am sad Lower Decks is moving on but I am not angry. But the lower deck people are no longer lower deck ensigns but are now LT JG leading lower decks. I do hate high school shows that last 12 years. The students are in their early 30's.Lower decks characters have moved on, well deserved, so they must be let go. The show is Lower Decks, if I wanted to watch a show about people that use to be in the lower decks, any Star Trek show would do. Season 4 had them lead new lower deckers and help them develop. It will be interesting how they handle Lower Decks in season 5, but they seem to have a good grasp of the situation. Lower Decks: Bravo, well done !

The cancelation of Lower Decks after last year's "yay Star Trek Animation!" bullshit is just a slap to the other side of the face. The first was their handling of Prodigy, and THEN rubbing Trek's rich history of animation in fans faces with last year's events. So awkwardly ignoring Prodigy in all of that. That was almost too much. But now? No. Part of the problem with modern Trek, and heck modern Star Wars for that matter (and I fear Stargate whenever that franchise gets liberated from the dungeon it's being held in) is that they are throwing way too much money at episodes to make them LOOK cool at the expense of allowing the shows to actually develop characters and quirks that ARE cool. Give me 24 lower-middle class budget episode seasons with 8 oddo's or *gasp* fillers *clutches pearls* over the modern eras 6-9 episodes that cost the same amount as running a small country just so the CGI looks like it could be projected onto an IMAX screen. There's sacrifices that I'm not sure pay off in the long run, especially not for the season count for these shows. Sure, it makes binging these shorter seasons kinda neat...but they're missing out of so much potential. That's what worries me most about all the talk of Starfleet having the most expensive set built! Yeah, and? When has the set been the reason a show WASN'T CANCELED UNCEREMONIOUSLY EVER? sigh.

Cue the wrong franchise's tagline "NOOOooooooo" I had no idea Lower Deck's was in trouble 😢😭😭

I will say that Lower Decks is getting dangerously close to the Romulan supernova and the synth attack on Mars, and I don't think those are too big to ignore and I don't think Lower Decks is tonally equipped to deal with it.

Terrible news, i hope this means they've got future plans though, a film maybe? I'd watch a Lower Decks feature film for sure. But also let's hope it's a big enough franchise to be picked up by others. Could be a good hook to get sci-fi fans to a platform that lacks them currently for their other sci-fi stuff.

I am absolutely devastated about Lower Decks and I actually hope Netflix picks it up like it did Prodigy!! I've signed all petitions! So yet again going back in time not forward! We're the ones watching it and paying for it why won't they just listen? Lower Decks I thought, was doing really well but the issue is that it's on 2 streaming services which splits the viewership like it did for Picard so it can seem like it's not doing well! The overarching issue, lets be honest here, Paramount are actually going bankrupt I read... Paramount need to merge with another studio or sell Star Trek to a studio who will care about it, who will actually listen to the fans. Having shows spread across different streaming services hurts the ratings because not everyone can get all those services, like right now I can't afford Paramount, so I can't watch Discovery. I think they need to have a long hard look at it as a whole franchise! and fundamentally LISTEN TO US FANS!

Not really surprised. Considering that all the main characters are no longer lower decks. I mean at this rate season 7 would see them as Lieutenants or possibly even Lieutenant Commanders and this goes against the very spirit of "lower decks"

I can safely say as a matter of fact, that Lower Decks has good writing. Even a someone who is not very much into start trek I can appreciate every little bit of thought and work put into each episode.

Man, I was hoping Lower Decks would be around for a while. I know it would have to end eventually, but not like this. But I agree with Sean. This was a cool gateway for any kind of Trek fan. I’m a very casual fan, but my knowledge of Star Trek has increased thanks to this show (and Trek Culture)
