For decades on both TV and in movies, Star Trek has presented audiences with a future full of exciting space travel, colorful characters, and all kinds of philosophical questions. However, the franchise has also given audiences plenty of heartbreaking moments that they could never forget, including one of the most famous tragic deaths in movie history.
From the time that audiences had to say goodbye to the beloved starship Enterprise alongside the ship's crew to the scenes where main characters had to deal with the death of their children, let’s take a look at some Star Trek moments that manage to break our hearts every time.

Yes! I am a huge DS9 fame....so: Kor dying honourably in battle to protect the rest of the squad Kang dying after fulfilling his blood oath Jadzia Dax dying from being at the wrong place at the wrong time. The series finale of Star Trek DS9 (the flashbacks that are shown at the end make me cry even today).

Data's statement to the bridge crew after Lal passed away. How he reincorporated her programs back into his positronic matrix. About her living on,in him. Just a little extension for Lal's death. That would've rounded out the actual premise of that episode. But nicely done nonetheless.

(Unpopular opinion) Data's death in Nemesis Kor's Sacrifice (DS9) Worf's brother, Kurn having his memory erased to avoid the dishonor of Worf (DS9) Alexander standing with Worf after the death of his mother (TNG) The end of "The Inner Light" when Picard plays the flute, remembering the lifetime of experiences and family he had and lost within 20 minutes (TNG) Trip and T'Pol's grief at the death of their "Baby" who was named after Trip's sister, who died in the Xindi Attack (ENT) Sisko's "Death" in the fire caves on Bajor in the Finale of DS9 (He doesn't die, but he's never gonna see his and Kassidy's kid being born since he's with the Prophets)

@ironduke0775 You can see his character crumple after he races to Engineering. Dr. McCoy and Mr. Scott struggle to keep Kirk from getting to the door. McCoy: "No! You'll flood the whole compartment!" Kirk: "He'll DIE!" Scott: "Sir, he's dead already." With that, the realization washes over, and a feather could knock Kirk down.

The profound sadness that not only did his brother and his nephew die, but that Picard is the last of his line, which now shall die with him. And to see him pass into the filament and the paradise he imagines isn't the past, like Kirk, but a present in which he has a wife and children. Without saying a word, Patrick Stewart's silent expression conveys so much pain that you KNOW exactly what he's going to see in his paradise without the moment ever feeling hollow or unearned.

Ah, no, but I can see how you can be mistaken here. The character you are talking about is Ted "J.L." Picard, or "movie picard". While at first glance superficially reminiscent with Captain Jean-Luc Picard (and being played by the same actor), he is a completely different person and lacks much of the strengths of his relative. He's very emotionally instable, quick to overreact and a bad leader, but good at shooting with a gun. If you're interested in him, they made a series about that guy recently on Amazon Prime. He's joined by Steven Riker (a relative of Cmdr William Riker) in his quest of finding Data's daughter's brother, emotional old fat Data, but fails quite miserably.It's called "Picard" and even has some Star Trek elements in it.

Yes definitely a tragic moment to be sure. But a totally dead end plot / narrative line. It makes me wonder if they were to have been rescued in an alternative draft of the script or something? I know that would reduce the emotional impact that scene had and make the stakes a bit lower but it kind of makes sense.

My favorite heart breaking moment was in Star Trek DS9 where Odo and Lwaxana Troi were stuck in the elevator. During their time there they both revealed their deepest insecurities and truths to each other. Lwaxana revealed hers which was being vulnerable and her appearance, if I’m remembering correctly, and Odo’s was, I think privacy, trustt, and vulnerability,. Odo was well past his time to regenerate and he finally just let himself go and returned to his natural gelatinous state in the garment of Lwaxana. The ultimate sign of trust for him. I just boo hoo’d when that happened. It’s still a moving episode for me even after all of these years. 🖖🏽

Jeri's acting over the death of One is one of the better sad moments, she has such a great range and even though she was originally cast for the body-suit roll, she and robert picardo made one of the best tv duos (and characters in general) in TV. To me, the episode where Tuvix was formed between Tuvik and Neelix on Voyager was also so passionate. Tuvix's cries of I want to live hits you and the picture of Janeway after she split them again really showed the agony the decision was. And what about Kes' passionate plea of how Tuvix had the right to live but she wanted Neelix back. I have often used this episode in my classes to provoke conversation on a wide range of emotions.

Tries not to cry.....cries a lot. In all honesty Star trek is my favorite show, I border on obsession. My dad loved it when I was growing up but I never watched it. When he passed away I decided to give it a watch and now here I am 7 years later with an entire room dedicated to Star trek memorabilia and collectables. I think the reason I get so emotional about Star Trek is because it does remind me of him. And don't even get me started on the episodes that hit too close to home. When Kira's dad died while she was gone, Jake watching his dead dad appear and disappear over and over until Jake dies in front of Sisko, when Mayweather finds out his dad died. Star Trek likes to kill off dad's and it absolutely destroys me.
@clarky23
@clarky23 4 года назад
there's nothing wrong with that at all....I love Star Trek but what really links me to my father is the Chicago Cubs. He was the reason I became a fan. He died when I was very young and the only memory I have of him is when he took me to see them plan at Wrigley field. he passed away just months after that trip. My family would tell me stories of how much he loved the Cubs. When they finally won in 2016, I had his picture in my arms hugging tight , crying and just kept saying they did Dad, they did it. There is nothing wrong about being nearly obsessed about something that brings your close to your father, even if only in spirit.

That happens to be one of my favorite episodes of all time but my reaction is completely different than yours. I thought it was moving, but in a very positive way. Those people didn't "re-die." They were actually resurrected, for a brief period, in the mind of a man who had never known true love or family. Although there is a melancholy about it I do not think Picard grieves. He celebrates a life lived full that he would have otherwise never known. And now, somebody remembers those people.

@@duanebidoux6087 Right. I believe your analogy comes the closest to what the writers had intended. My take away was also a sense of melancholy, but mostly sorrow & loss, for Picard to have grown to love all of those people . . . his wife, his best friend, his children, and his grandchildren . . . and then to wake up and realize that they were all people who once existed, yet people he had never actually met.

I'm always able to hold together until the very end, when the Bajoran you mentioned kills Marritza. The moment between Kira saying "NO!" and "it's not"...man, I'm tearing up right now just typing this out. Nana Visitor showed such a deep understanding of her character in that short pause; you can watch her (Kira's) internal realization that 1. she doesn't hate Cardassians just because they're Cardassians, and 2. prior to that moment, she didn't know that about herself, and 3. the Bajoran disgusted her, not the Cardassian dying in her arms. Just a beautiful, poignant character arc.

What you always do. Turn death into a fighting chance to live ... The Measure of a Man is not only one of my favorite STNG episodes, but one of my favorite episodes of any TV show. It has a Blade Runner-esque feel to the episode ... and even though Roy, the true hero of Blade Runner, dies in the end, he wins because he finds his humanity which is a transcendent quality that goes beyond being human. (RIP Rutger!!!). Data, of course, was always more human than human and his humanity was always there. Ah yes ... Sexy 7 of 9. Bless you Jeri Ryan!!! And finally, Spock's death and Kirk's eulogy are major tearjerkers ..."Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was ... the most ... human!". This is an excellent tribute to a brilliant franchise. Bless you Gene Rodenberry for bringing us a glimpse of Utopia ...

Brent Spiner is a very versatile actor, not only in being able to show Data’s evolution into humanity over the seasons, the change that resulted when his emotion chip was installed, the “Mr. Hyde” personality of his “brother” Lore, and of his creator Dr. Soong, who appeared in a number of episodes, but BEFORE Star Trek: He made several appearances as the “Yugoslav hillbilly,” half of a perpetually sad, hard luck couple appearing as defendants on “Night Court,” starring Harry Anderson. Some of the scenes in which he appeared before the judge have been posted on RU-vid.

@@allanrichardson1468 Nice comment !!! I have seen all those Night Court episodes with Brent ... that accent and the family situations ... ironically funny ... He also played a crazy shrink in an episode of Law And Order: Criminal Intent (my favorite of the Law And Order series) ... appropriately titled " Shrink-Wrapped" ...and who can forget his Dr. Okun in the Independence Day movies and he played himself in an episode of The Big Bang Theory. He also released an album of music titled "Ol' Yellow Eyes Is Back" a take on Frank Sinatra's "Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back" ... of course he is Ol' Yellow Eyes Data on the album ...

City on the Edge of Forever - the most heartbreaking scene of any TV show I remember. Incredible. The death of Spock was great, too, of course, but in a movie. I always got a kick out of the playing of Amazing Grace, which is probably the favorite hymn of Christians, on bagpipes by Scotty at the funeral of a Jewish Vulcan. :-) Didn't take anything away from the funeral, of course, but it appeals to my strange sense of humor. RIP, Mr. Nimoy. We miss you.

All great choices, but nothing about TNG S5E25: Inner Light? Picard lives an entire other life, has a family he loves, and then loses it all because it turned out to be a simulation that took less than 30 minutes to play out while he was unconscious on the bridge. The song that plays throughout is one of my favourite pieces of music ever. Hell, they wrote and performed an orchestral version for the 30th Anniversary album. The rest of the album was cut together pieces of a couple of episode soundtracks. This one was orchestrated and rerecorded entirely, and it deserved it. There's also S4E2: Family. Picard goes back to see his brothers family at their home in France, and after fighting with his brother he breaks down and admits how he feels about what the Borg did to him, and what they made him do. His guilt, feelings of helplessness, everything. Seeing a character who's so far been like a goddamn mountain of stoicism crumble like that had me damn near in tears.

The Inner Light was a celebration of life, community and finding your place in life. Picard was enriched as a person. I have no idea what you watched. As for Family: It was this episode that made Picard a grounded character. Especially because he was this stoic block of control the whole time.
