This is the complete saga of Star Trek The Next Generation’s man-dress, or skant uniform variant. It goes into the context and history behind this brief but memorable costume. The story of the Skant is also the story of William Ware Theiss, with his work beginning on Star Trek The Original Series and continuing on in-spirit on Strange New Worlds.

I hope when they inevitably reboot TNG and they use writers who have nothing but contempt for the fans like STD, they have a STD Klingon fight and in STD fashion when Worf stabs Duras in the neck and it shows slow motion, then the camera pans down and you get a little peak at the ol double dong. The skant as a uniform variant actually makes sense when you realize the ambient temperature of Starfleet vessels with human/alien crews is set at 24°C (75.2°F) to accommodate various lifeforms. That's a little too warm for many people, so an opportunity to bare your legs would be welcomed by anyone who found it too much.

@@deadend1041that was intentional. TNG famously wanted a “Cruise Ship aesthetic”, luxury technologies, lots of carpeted space, in the early episodes Tasha even mentions going to some of the Enterprise’s “shops”. This sorta philosophy was continued in Star Trek, DS9 they wanted something a bit more communal and it’s kinda like an apartment complex and airport, Voyager they wanted sleek and sci-fi like a special fighter plane. For Enterprise, in order to sell the feel of this being much more primitive compared to the other Star Treks, it’s aesthetic was actually based on real submarines-even it’s hull-compact compartments, very little space and capacity for crew, hand rails and bracing handles spaced everywhere. Happens every summer in the UK, kids challenge the gender equality when it comes to Summer clothes as girls can wear skirts which are a lot cooler than trousers, and shorts are not in the dress code, so every summer we see an article on Facebook with a boy wearing a skirt because it is in the dress code but shorts are not (it has nothing to do with gender identity but practicality).

Appreciate the video mentioning that the TOS minidress was actually Grace Lee Whitney's idea; it gives credit where it's due (Grace came from a stage and dance background and was comfortable in such garb, similar to Nichelle Nichols, who also admitted to liking the outfit), it rightly addresses the issues Grace faced because of it (though she was already a substance addict before TOS, it certainly didn't help), and it helps to alleviate a certain negative view among some commentators (looking at you, TrekCulture) that it was Gene Roddenberry's idea to have women run around in short dresses, which tends to paint him as some kind of lecherous chauvinist. Far from it; Gene may have been a shameless womanizer in his personal life, but professionally he held women in high regard, especially in a time when precious few in Hollywood did.

In my own head canon I always took the Command and Operations switching colors to be a hold over from the Monster Maroon uniforms from the movies. That during the time between the movies and TNG the red uniforms became a symbol of Starfleet and the Federation across the galaxy. So when Starfleet decide to change the uniforms and go back to a more simpler design the red became the color for Command because it would be those officers who would be making first contact with new races and representing the Federation in other diplomatic, exploratory, and defensive matters.

The jumpsuit sort of went into that direction. It's functional first. It's what pilots and racecar drivers and engineers wear on duty. Enterprise also gave us jumpsuits, and even more practical ones than in TNG, because they had pockets where you could store all kinds of useful stuff. Yes, that is my main issue with Starfleet attire. No place to put things. Can't hide that mini phaser anywhere but in your buttcrack. No way to covertly carry a communicator on away missions. And how many phasers and tricorders get thrown around because the holsters are just open plastic rings.

In many civilizations throughout history, men wore what we would probably consider skirt-like or dress-like clothing items. In some cultures, they still do. I think it makes sense that we'd go back to that some time in the future. Yeah, it looks a little silly to us, but that makes it more real to me. I mean... I know what I wore back in the early 2000's. What looked normal then doesn't look so normal now.... Let the men wear skants. Let everyone wear skants. But... maybe name it something else? It would combine well with the toga like idea, In an IRL scenario would lent well to cost concerns, add a glue layer for when you are certain you got it propper, and you now can just take it off and on like a shirt. Fast. That can be the everyday version, while the pure wrap is for oflicial events.

I believe the best thing to ever happen to Star Trek was Roddenberry being removed from control of the franchise. the initial idea of a hope-filled future where technology solves most of our issues and things like sexism/racism are mostly gone is a fantastic idea, but the dude had lots of other weird ideas and quirks that kind of just dragged the show down a few notches. this lines up with the Rikers beard timeline too when his influence was relegated to the showrunner keeping his ideals in mind when they made the show. thats when the show went from a solid 6-7 to a 9-9.5 in my opinion.

I think I was twelve or thirteen when STTNG first aired where I live. My first thought when I saw the skant was: "Are they going to wear that on away missions into rough terrain? Those legs are gonna get scraped up pretty badly." I also wouldn't want to think about what crawling through a Jeffrey's tube would do to the knees of skant-wearers. There are many situations Starfleet personnel wouldn't want to face bare-legged, which makes the skant a uniform they need to change out of in order to fulfill parts of their duties, which would make unpractical. Granted, how often any pariticular crew-member would have to change out of a skant would depend on their exact work, but the skant would remain a uniform variant for certain occasions, not standard wear.

@@MrAranton Good points! We see them a lot in engineering, not a place you'd think they'd be conducive to the type of work they do. Well, the Jefferies tubes, at least. Many seem to just stand around to push buttons. On a larger scale, I've long thought the standard uniform isn't the greatest for away missions. I appreciate the coat in Star Trek II and the tactical vests in Discovery/SNW for that reason.

I was exactly 9 when TNG premiered, and seeing men in skants is among my most vivid memories watching it. I just loved the idea of a future where all the silly gendered stereotypes had been abolished.
