This is taken from my Star Trek The Next Generation Moments project that I'm working on. The project will show the best of STNG in a series of memorable moments from each episode. Still have some work to do on it, see what you think.
But please watch it from my STNG Moments Playlist, that way you can see each episode as they are meant to be seen. • TNG Moments Season Two
Summery.
Episode :29 After Data easily solves an ordinary Sherlock Holmes holodeck mystery, Geordi asks the computer to make a Holmes villain capable of defeating Data. The resultant Professor Moriarty soon becomes far more powerful than expected.

By far one of the greatest episodes in TNG. Top 5. The first GREAT episode of TNG. They could have went season 1 and had Daniel Davis shake the ship constantly, make threats, start causing trouble, but they didn't. It was pure drama masterfully acted by Davis and Stewart.

For a mission 'to seek out new life', the crew should have kept him alive, even if that meant transfering the Holodeck-info to a starbase, and letting Moriarty live there, or even transefering the entire ships database to another unit, so as to keep Moriatry functionable and alive. His genius could have helped Starfleet later with the Borg, Dominion, and all comers.
@milkdudder
@milkdudder 4 года назад
They didn't kill him. In this episode, after they had reached an agreement, they saved his file in the Enterprises database, to be turned back on once technology had reached the point where he could have substance outside of a Holodeck. In the sequel episode, he was accidentally turned back on by Barclay, and the crew learned that he had momentary sessions of Consciousness while he was in the file, and was aware of the passage of time. This angered him immensely as well as no progress has been done in 4-5 years to rectify his situation, so he once again tried to take over the ship. He believed that Picard had lied to him to get control of his ship back, and had never meant to turn him back on. The solution they had for him, without his knowledge, was to put him in a fully interactable holographic datacore, constantly running allowing him to live a lifetime's worth of experience without ever knowing he'd never escaped the Holodeck. He would no longer wait for the technology, and he left them no alternatives. We can only hope that he lived out the rest of his days exploring the Galaxy and experiencing everything it offered.
