" I wonder if there was someone who said we need to have more episodes that people can watch in any order..." The name you are looking for is Rick Berman.

What a missed opportunity. It could have been more depth from Picard, like he still has lingering trauma from being assimilated by the Borg and tortured by Cardassians then someone puts a device in his head. The episode should have been Beverly trying to help him through a nervous breakdown while feeling some of the symptoms herself.

Picard and Jack Crusher were best friends and I think it was always implied that Picard had feelings for Beverly from very early in the series. This episode was kind of an FU to the 'shippers who always wanted Beverly and Picard to be together. Kind of like "they do love each other but just to spite you, they're never going to do anything about it."

I think the reason for the open ending for Picard/Crusher was to reignite the seed planted in earlier seasons for the marriage established in All Good Things. That's it.

Great spot on review as always. Very good points. Overall, I liked the episode. C+ for me. The main problem in the episode was the script. The writers/producers could have swung for the fence, but instead played it safe and got a comfortable base hit (which in the long run, may have been the best decision). I was actually alright with the way they left the Picard and Beverly relationship. A real relationship between Beverly and Picard would have been interesting, it would, however, have been a CHANGE to the most interesting character. The side-plot with Riker I was indifferent to. It was there. The writers instead of getting some better insight and growth in the way Riker thinks instead felt to stall Riker's development and had him strong-arm the alien sides. I think this season would have been better to give the Riker character some growth in the hopes that he would be set up for a spin-off to another episode, but either the producers or the actor himself kept the character neutral.

I agree with the point about developing ideas over times and episodes. The concept that Jack Crusher and Picard were best friends as well as the episode about his long lost son, all could have been great stories to present in either the first or second season. Imagine if the audience knew that there had been a love between them and an unknown son from a previous relationship. It would have added new meaning to Vash and his relationship to Wesley.

Season 7 has a habit of setting lofty emotional stakes that ultimately have no lasting impact on any of the characters. The sci-fi and diplomatic aspects of the plot are generic and underdeveloped, like they were just tacked on as a formality to remind us we're still watching Star Trek.

This is one of those episodes, as the series got stale at the end, that takes an hour to tell a ten-minute story. The Masks and New Veriform City episodes are other examples. The high point comes at the end, where Bev flashes some serious leg at Picard, giving him an idea what the Sub Rosa ghost saw in her.

It seems like such a minor thing, but the on-location shooting and tracking action shots jumps this episode up at least a grade in my opinion. By this point in the show I was so tired of the claustrophobic papier-mâché rocks set. I always found the near-slapstick personification of the crazy conspiracy theory aliens to be eye-rolling. The writers were obviously taking a shot at the UFO and alien abduction crowd, but 1) this is a science fiction show with hundreds of alien species and 2) these writers are presenting a society viable enough to make it through various stages of the Federation application process so it's really the writers who look dumb. Regarding the romance to nowhere, apparently there is this mantra in Hollywood called something like "developing the characters" which pushes relationships late in the series, often arbitrarily. It's why despite being called "Friends" everyone is trying to get in bed with each other by the end. It's also why "House, M.D.", a show ostensibly about medical mysteries, by the end becomes more about "Huddy" and the fact that love trumps medicine. You'll see more of this in this season of TNG and the subsequent movies.
