Hey everyone, hope you enjoy the first episode of Spacedock Planetside, and my thanks to all the patrons who made it happen. Apologies if there are some small audio anomalies in this one, I just moved to a new place and i'm still getting the recording gear set up properly.

In case of emergencies the AT-AT has a retractable escape patch located on the "belly" of the walker that leads to a toilet stall in the walkers head area. This escape hatch was exploited by Luke Skywalker when he pulled himself up with a magnetic harpoon and tow cable, cut into the walking mechanism and threw a thermal detonator into the toilet stall… Much to the dismay of the current occupant Who was unwilling, or unable, to leave his seat in time…

@AlexGellel
@AlexGellel 7 лет назад
Akios Eres ignoring the fact that it was invented afterwards by writers, you're right, the AT-TE was a much more effective vehicle. However the AT-AT fits into the Empire's mantra, the Tarkin Doctrine, incredibly well. Tall and towering, with a very distinct sound, it's meant to strike fear into the scum who dare oppose the Imperial rule.
@shadowstar5810
@shadowstar5810 7 лет назад
Alex Gellel Agreed. I do like the Republic's Clone Wars vehicles better than most of the Empires, but beating the AT-ATs iconic place is Star Wars is difficult to say the least.
@darwinxavier3516
@darwinxavier3516 7 лет назад
Agree as well. AT-AT was a walking(I feel no shame)example of how NOT to design a ground assault mech. But still can't beat it's reputation and image.
@alexanerose4820
@alexanerose4820 7 лет назад
+Darwin Xavier Actually reinforce the neck and spread the legs a bit and you have the example on HOW to design a ground assault mech/ mobile command center with the firepower of a battleship. They did it in legends and from what I can remember was all but impenetrable only falling to a ludicrous amount of concentrated fire
@barleysixseventwo6665
@barleysixseventwo6665 6 лет назад
Eh...no. It has minimal weapon traverse and all it's weapons are on the front. The AT-AT would be utterly screwed if you built a tank with the same weapons and the same power plant and the same armor, but on lower-profile tracks and with all the weapons mounted on a 360 degree turret. The fact that the newest version requires B-17 styled *Ball Turret Gunners* speaks to it's impracticality. The "Spread of the legs" is particularly egregious: The AT-AT puts it's weight on 75% of its standing surface area when moving, but a Tank keeps its weight balanced on all 100% of its sitting surface area when on the move. This thing could take one step in any direction and find that the ground, fine with its ground pressure at a standstill, couldn't deal with its ground pressure on the move. To say nothing of the fact that armor spent on the legs would be better put to use covering treads, neck, and underbelly were a different approach taken to the design. The Tarkin approach is one thing, but insisting this design is practical to open warfare with an unintimidated enemy is almost laughable.

Good start. Excellent choice to begin this new show. It makes me sleep so much better at night knowing that the Empire deploys such weapons of war. The fact that the Empire is working so hard to ensure peace, and stability to the galaxy brings me great comfort.

No I think it is more like the T95 Gun Motor Carriage as its design makes it look like a siege assault vehicle. Yet the Empire being the herp derping retards they are over infatuated with its fear imposing size and shoehorn into the main heavy armoured fighting vehicle instead of upgrading the more tactically flexible AT-TE

*Excellent* debut! (BTW: I know it's *definitely* not Canon, but the fan film "IMPS: The Relentless" has a beautiful segment that takes place in the infantry doors of an AT-AT and shows features that make a great deal of sense. For you SW fans out there who've not yet seen it, it's definitely worth the time to watch, IMO)
@richardched6085
@richardched6085 7 лет назад
Jeff Anderson the AT-AT felt oddly efficient in IMPS. IMPS pretty much made everything about the Imperial Military realistic. Variation in designs depending on the unit. And real military like behavior. I think IMPS was also the first production to mention Saw Gerrera's Partisans and it didn't even know it. Just watch the conversation between the Snowtrooper rookie and Snowtrooper Veteran.

All anyone needs to do is get behind them and it becomes the galaxy's biggest turkey shoot. At least the AT-TE's had dedicated rear guns and a 360 degree main turret. Plus the six legs meant tow cables on the speeders would be useless. In my eyes the AT-TE remains the superior walker of choice for it's adaptability to its environment and combat situation. In the words of Jack O'Neill, one (AT-AT) is a weapon of terror, it is meant to intimidate the enemy. The other (AT-TE) is a weapon of war, it is meant to kill the enemy.

@vic5015
@vic5015 6 лет назад
Mutantzed it DOES fit the overall psychology of despotic regimes like the Empire and it's obvious inspiration, the Nazis, though. Hitler was NOTORIOUSLY increasingly obsessed with pie-in-the-sky SUPER expensive terror weapons, a number of which (Hello, intercontinental "America bomber"!) were UTTERLY beyond ANYONE'S technological capabities at the time (sufficiently powerful for their weight rocket and jet fuels simply did NOT exist then).
@Yayaloy9
@Yayaloy9 4 года назад
@@vic5015 But the reason is there, and it is effective. I'm talking about the tiger tank by the way. Although it has many downside, it is the only tank amongst the German to be able to keep its aces alive. A tiger tank was able to tank up 50 shots of a t34 and was still able to retreat back to the German's line while a panzer 4 would have gotten the entire crew killed. Correct if I'm wrong by the way.
@davidlewis5312
@davidlewis5312 4 года назад
@@Yayaloy9 the problem was it needed to. The Russians were making 25 T34s for every Tiger the Germans made. Yes, it was the superior weapon system and its crew were usually able to make it out alive, an important thing as Germany started to run out of skilled troops to fight for her cause. However, her functional survivability in one to one combat was a micro-upside and paled to the macro down-side of Germany being reliant highly advanced 'uber' systems in the face of overwhelming material advantage the allies had.

The neck joint is the best target. Used to play Star Wars Battlefront 1. Heavy weapons could cause severe damage when flanking. If the opposite team were wise they always kept Speeders to intercept annoying players like myself. Sometimes I was given the opportunity to fly an X-Wing then I focused my efforts on staffing the AT AT whilst the other pilot dealt with the Tie Fighters. Ahhh those were large scale battles & credit to the dev team for fitting it on an XBox 360

Anzac-A1 yeah, that's what Rogue Squadron does in the books. A pack of AT-ATs? No problem. Just have X-wings modified for atmospheric flight hit them with proton torps. Viola! Problem solved. ONLY Hoth's brutal cold kept it from happening in ESB. On a WHOLLY unrelated note, you'd think that SOMEONE would find a way to use a mini proton torp battery or a mini concussion missile battery or a thermal detonator launcher as (ultra) heavy artillery for ground battles, but apparently not.

I never liked the AT-AT, it had few weaknesses, true, but the weaknesses it DID have were shockingly apparent to a skilled observer. It was too slow, tall and top heavy. It was embarrassingly easy to trip, and the over exposed underbelly was easier to reach than the AT-TE plus the AT-TE could climb sheer rock faces and has been proven to work in space as well, not as a ship of course, but as a quick positioning artillery battery in space. The AT-AT's underbelly was easily penetrated by a lightsaber and it could be destroyed by a single thermal detonator. Quite frankly, I can't understand how the rebels didn't win the ground war on Hoth. The AT-AT is more of a ranged weapons platform and terror weapon than a truly effective tank. Just like the Death Stars, all three of them and the super star destroyers. They should've updated the AT-TE rather than replace them with the AT-ATs

@jossgoyanko7006
@jossgoyanko7006 6 лет назад
The more I think about it, the more I start to think that this was the entire point of the design. We often forget that Star Wars is ultimately a space opera, not meant to be realistic at all, and the entire design of the AT-AT can be seen as allegorical to the Empire as a whole. Massive, intimidating, but ultimately built on shaky foundations. As a metaphor for centralized, authoritarian regimes in control of a hyper-militaristic imperial power, the whole Empire, as intimidating as it was, ultimately collapsed the instant it's head of state was killed, a glaring and, in hindsight, rather obvious weakness. A realistic nation-state has lines of succession and lesser governing bodies that can take on emergency powers of government in the event that such a thing happens (yeah, you could argue that Vader could do it, but he's had no experience in civil administration, only military leadership, so I can't see him trying to balance a budget, etc.) Throughout Star Wars, the Galactic Empire has this basic motif in basically everything they build. The AT-ATs can be defeated with towing cables, a Super Star Destroyer is destroyed because of a single A-Wing, the whole Stormtrooper Corps is comprised of poorly trained and extremely demoralized soldiers, and then there's the obvious example, both of the Death Stars. The First was destroyed because the very person who was meant to design chose to build the key to it's destruction into it's very blueprints, and the second was built with a massive hole in it's side, both gaping, fundamental errors that highlight just how inherently unstable these weapons were the begin with, just like how any imperialist, authoritarian regime is ultimately made unstable by it's very nature, by the very methods it uses to create and maintain its government.

I always thought the AT-AT seemed poorly designed for ground combat, very tall tanks are just very big targets, it’s like the empire just assumes no one else has enough firepower to take down an AT-AT so they don’t bother trying to utilize cover in any way. However, I’ve considered the way you describe their usage in this video, and the fact that an AT-AT’s height advantage can greatly counter the defense bonus of trenches and other ground defenses. With that in mind, I can see how useful they can be in battle, especially when combatting the enemy on an open field.

I feel they should of used these as a supporting transport unit for the more capable AT-ET which I feel is superior in many ways

Due to Hoth's terrain that the Empire needed to deploy them and what better way to kick off another section of your channel then with the AT-AT Walker.

2:18 if the AT-AT can carry 40 troops, there are too many stormtroppers on the way :) (Except maybe the want to board the next AT-AT standing behind)

I think the detractors of the AT-AT need to remember not to compare it to a tank. The AT-AT is not a tank, and the two types of vehicles should not be compared. I believe the AT-AT was a superb weapon that just needed a few minor improvements and proper battlefield use. I and a few others at other places have stated that the AT-AT is a combination of a siege and artillery platform, and a mobile command center. Beyond a few minor thing like laser canons on the sides, bottom and rear and a missile launcher on top, the AT-AT was an excellent weapon when it was used correctly and properly defended, just like any armored vehicle should.

Some of the mechs from battle tech are interesting, take the Timber wolf (AKA the Mad Cat) for example.
