In 1977 I was 7 and my sister was 5. My parents hired a babysitter and took off on an adventure on their own with no particular plans. They ended up driving around San Francisco randomly just looking for something interesting. They found a movie theater with a long line where people were coming out of the theater and getting back in line. They had never heard of the movie on the marquee but figured the long liner, with people come out and getting back in line was a good sign. So they parked the bike and got in line. After the movie they didn't get back in line, but they rode home, paid the baby sitter and took us kids to the local theater to see it. And oh my God was it amazing.

This was such a groundbreaking movie. They invented a lot of visual and sound effects for this. When it first came out, it was like nothing we’d ever seen. The whole audience cheered when the Death Star exploded.

So fun watching people experience this completely blind. I saw this in the theater at 7-8 years old. Life changed for every kid back then. I still get chills at the opening screen. These two made it so much fun learning the names. “That’s Harrison Ford!” I was dead. Love these two.

I was 6 when this came out. My dad, sister and I stood in line on a Thursday evening to see it. I fell asleep. I was so upset I cried the whole next day. My dad took me again noon on Saturday when I was awake. I love my dad, RIP.

Even after more than 40 years, the effects in this masterpiece still look amazing today. Star Wars was cutting edge in 1977, and my 8 year old self was in awe (and still am at 53).

This is probably the most I've ever witnessed someone not knowing about Star Wars. Most people that have not seen it know many references to it from just the pop culture. But that's a glorious thing. You guys get to enjoy the series fresh, just like how a kid might have experienced this new world for the first time back in 1977. Looking forward to the sequels.

Woohoo! You guys started on your Star Wars journey! Many of your questions about the force and Obi-Wan Kenobi and all of that will get answered in the sequel: The Empire Strikes Back, which many fans consider even better than the original Star Wars. Part of the reason it took off like it did is that it's a modern fairy tale - you have a princess, Han is like a pirate, Obi Wan is like a wizard, Luke is like a farm boy, Darth Vader is the evil sorcerer, etc. Harrison Ford was in TWO big movie franchises AT THE SAME TIME: Star Wars and Indiana Jones, and the combination of the two made him a super star. I was born this same year and my whole childhood up until around 7 was Star Wars, that's what all the kids in my neighborhood did, it was in all the stores, and happy meals and everywhere. It's hard to explain just HOW BIG Star Wars was and how much it impacted culture, both directly and indirectly. Prior to Star Wars, there was very little interest in Science Fiction. Star Trek had been on TV in the 1960s, but besides that, most science fiction or fantasy movies were either too niche, too cheesy, or considered just for kids. If you look at the biggest movie just two years earlier, Jaws, and other movies at the time, most took place in the real world in the present day and were more realistically themed. George Lucas had a hell of a time selling Star Wars to movie studios, everyone thought he was nuts, but finally 20th Century Fox gave him a break, partly because he took a lower salary in exchange for the merchandising rights. Making merch from a movie wasn't really a thing back then, and the studio happily agreed. Star Wars was the first HUGE movie that had toys and T-Shirts and hats and lunchboxes and pajamas and backpacks and bedsheets and coloring books and every other damn thing. George Lucas made enough money from the toys and merch that he was able to pay for the rest of the Star Wars movies out of his own pocket. So, you can thank modern merchandising on Star Wars. Star Wars made over $770 million which adjusted for inflation was close to $4 billion. It completely shocked Hollywood, and quickly other studios started becoming interested in science fiction. The guy who wrote Alien had been trying for a few years to get a studio interested in it, and they all said no, until Star Wars that is, and then they called him back and said they'd do Alien, so Alien happened b/c of Star Wars. Star Trek had been popular on TV in the 1960s but it had lost a lot of its' audience by the 1970s, but Paramount wanted to compete with Star Wars so they brought back the cast to make a series of Star Trek movies, which made Star Trek popular again, which led to multiple spin offs, which again, wouldn't have happened without Star Wars. Even modern superhero movies likely would not have happened without Star Wars being the trailblazer that it was. The first "modern" superhero movie was Superman in 1978, 18 months after Star Wars. But besides the storytelling and the merchandising, George Lucas had to invent a bunch of special effects and started a special effect company, Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) to invent the types of computers and cameras needed to do the shots in the movie. ILM went on to do the special effects for: Back to the Future, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, Jumanji, Men in Black, Titanic, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Avengers, and hundreds more. ILM also created the first version of Photoshop before it ended up at Adobe. It's really hard to wrap your head around just how many things Star Wars has contributed to. Cheers

1977. Amazing. 5 years old in the cinema and totally hooked. 1980 episode 5 and 1983 episode 6. It was a kid's adventure dream. Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers and Star Trek around at the same time. What a film and TV era.

I wish you two could experience this movie in a huge cinema with the curved screen and the sound system cranked up to max. It was an experience I'll never forget.

I was 11 when I went to see this in 77. Still have the ticket stubs, cost 2.50 for the 9pm showing. Didn't have dvds or video tape so movies stayed in the theater for over a year sometimes. I watched it 113 times in the theater. I know, I'm weird.

I'm sure a lot people are saying this, but Star Wars was a huge part of so many of our childhoods. So it's just extra fun to see people watch it for the first time. Thank you! Can't wait for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi!

Hearing someone call Chewie "Bigfoot" made my day, my week... I love that you're going into this completely blindfolded. I would give anything to go back to that time. I am a huge star wars fan, I love everything about it, every movie, every TV show, I'm easily pleased.

I was 9 in 1977. My Dad(who NEVER waited in line for anything) waited with my Brother (6) for about 90 minutes to watch Star Wars at our local theater in a small Georgia town East of Atlanta, a really old-fashioned place called the "Strand" It even had a balcony. At that point, I was hooked as a Star Wars fan for the rest of my life. I saw TESB in 1980 in Freemont, Nebraska, while we were out there visiting family. Saw ROTJ in 1983 in a multi-plex in Atlanta. It was fantastic, but nothing compared to that first experience in a small town. I love how you guys are experiencing this for the first time and sharing it with the world.

I like that you left Luke hitting the targeting computer off switch and leaning back in the edit. It's a definite thing that often gets overlooked. Ben says "Trust me." so he does.

I was 19 when the first film came out. This movie was like nothing I had ever seen before or since. People lined up around the block to see the movie, and many people showed up dressed like characters from the movies. You are so so right BJ, the special effects were ground breaking and blew our minds. But as you were discussing, the reason it is so special is the story and great characters. Great reaction, that was so much fun watching you watch this. There is nothing like seeing this for the first time, dont ask me how many times I have seen it...lol. Carrie Fischer was only 19 while filming the original Star Wars film. She was basically Hollywood royalty as the daughter of screen star Debbie Reynolds and then well known singer Eddie Fischer. If you want to delve deeper into her life she wrote a basically autobiographical novel Postcards From The Edge detailing her struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction which was made into a movie with Meryl Streep playing her character and Shirley McClain playing the Debbie Reynolds role.

He 100% got it right. Obi-Wan told Vader that if he struck him down he'd become more powerful than even Vader could imagine and the second he died, he became one with the Force. Until that moment Luke couldn't even shoot a Stormtrooper, but after Obi-Wan died, he could shoot accurately. The Empire Strikes Back is the movie where the story really picks up steam and I can't wait for your reaction to it.

When the first panorama shot of the Imperial Star Destroyer engulfed the screen chasing the rebel ship came on you knew you were in for a very different sci-fi movie. That scene is still best appreciated on the big cinema screen.

It gives me chills every time I hear the very first line from Obi-Wan: Hello There! So iconic!

You know the voice of Vader is done by James Earl Jones. He makes Vader with that voice. Pretty cool. He does the voice in all the Star Wars movies and games also.

Fun Fact: George Lucas actually didn't have any faith that this movie was going to be successful. He showed a rough cut to his other director friends and they were laughing and making jokes at the movie. Only one person spoke up and said, "This is going to change the movie industry forever." And that was his friend, Steven Spielberg.

The interesting thing is when this was released theater operaters weren't that pumped about it. The studio had trouble getting screens. It didn't even open in my city the first week of release. Two/three weeks later every theater was trying to get it. And yes it did come to our city, and ran and ran and ran, etc.

I always forget there are people out there who have never seen this movie. It's great seeing you guys' reaction to seeing it for the first time, but you'll never fully understand what it was like seeing this in the theaters back in 1977. Sci-fi special effects movies come out every other week now, but this was a groundbreaking movie in it's day. It was one of the first big blockbusters and the effects were state of the art. That opening scene of the Imperial Star destroyer overtaking the rebel ship was like nothing anybody had seen before. George Lucas founded Industrial Light and Magic (now a well known company) to develop many of the techniques used in this movie that are now standard practice in all movies. Harrison Ford had been in a few movies before this, but this was his breakout roll. Sir Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan) had already had a long successful acting career in the 40s through the 70s when he was cast in this movie, and continued to act until shortly before his death in 2000. Congratulations, you're no longer Star Wars virgins. You have only eight more to go now.

1977 my mom took my brother (8) & I (6) to see it in the theater when it first came out and I still remember the feeling. It was so exciting and so hi- tech for its time.

He and I didn't see eye to eye on a lot of things, but Star Wars was what he and I bonded most on. It kills me that the first time you see this isn't in a theatre. It just hits differently, especially the opening battle.

I was 6 when this movie came out. I remember my brother who was 8 at the time , my dad and I waited three hours in a line that wound around the block to get into the movie theater to see it. And it was worth the waits in 1977 nobody day had ever seen anything Ike that. The effects were way before their time and are still amazing today. You can see why this movie was as big as it was.

This movie really created the 'summer blockbuster' for theaters. Today, every studio wants that massive hit in the summer. I saw this in the theater when I was 11 years old. Changed how we all go to the movies. :-) Love your reaction, truly never seen it before.

My dad took me to see this on release. I was 9, such a perfect age to be blown away by what became an epic franchise. Seeing the first 3 movies at 9, 12 and then 15 bring back such fond memories. And it's so neat to see people watching this nearly 50 years later for the first time.

Saw it in theater when it first came out,theater was packed, no empty seats, waited in line down the street! envious of you seeing it for first time! Believe me, we all wanted a light saber after seeing this, one of the coolest sci fi gadgets of all time.

Great reaction and BTW Chewy is Han Solo's conscience in many ways so he's not a whiner, but a warner despite the fact he growls his dismay, Han can still understand him.

P.S. The practical & digital effects were groundbreaking back then (1977). I saw this at the theater when it was first released and was blown away like never before and maybe since. Every last kid in my neighborhood and schools (and even parents and teachers) were talking about it. The impact it made was like the Exorcist, but in a different and much more positive way.

Hey Asia and BJ. I remember being at the kids table for Thanksgiving and debating the meaning if the FORCE. As well we debated what happened to Obi-wan. I tried to explain he was absorbed into the force and that he was a spirit talking back to Luke. So many kids laughed at my theory. But I eventually I got the last laugh. After that i was a Star Wars fan for life.

Imagine that in a big screen movie theater, with a good sound system. We were about 13 years old. NOBODY made anything like this. The first ship was impressive in the theater in 1977. The second ship following was mindblowing. And we just went from there.

This movie was an event. I was 17 at the time of the premiere and there had never been anything like it. There is a documentary about the making of the movie. No CGI back then.

Don't be afriad to turn captions on for films that have a lot of strange names, like names of people and of places. Seeing how the names are spelled can be a big help in keeping track.
