Anthony is correct, You have to remember it was released in 1977, over 47 years ago, it was so far ahead of it's time, it's still amazing today. (Yes it has been digitally re-done, remastered but the original cut is astounding for the time.) There were many "copycats", movies, and TV shows that tried to use the "Space Drama" theory soon after of course, the Special Effects just couldn't hold a candle to Lucas and Star Wars. I agree about the lightsaber duel between Vader and Obi-Wan, but in 1977, even the Samurai battles in movies, which Lucas says he's based the saber duels on, looked like this. At the time it came out, it was an amazing fight scene. 30-40 years later, not so much. Lucas had a story board that covered the six original movies when he made this movie. A lot of that storyboard made it to the big screen. He's claimed he started in the middle because the technology didn't exist to tell the story from the beginning in 1977. Obviously 1-3 would have looked very different if they had been made in 77, 80, and 83. When he did re-master this movie, he did take care not to ruin or change the story. Would a 90's or a twenty first century FX lightsaber duel improve the movie? Trust me, I get what you're saying about the duel, I've thought about how cheesy it looks compared the the duels in all of the other movies, but glad it stayed the same, tweaked here and there, but still stiff and really boring compared to what we've seen since then. Another thing to think about. Obi-Wan went into that fight, knowing he was going to "lose the battle", he had no intention of defeating Vader. He even told Vader, "You can't win Darth, if you strike me down I'll become more powerful than you can imagine." Which of course is what happened. I hope that makes sense. Once Kenobi is gone, we see Vader poking at Kenobi's cape, he's thinking about how easy that was, what did his former Master mean? I saw Star Wars in June of 1977 on the Big Screen. I was 13 years old. I'll never forget it. I've seen it probably over 100 times since. As a young teen, seeing that in that year, it changed how I viewed cinema forever. This wasn't a movie manipulated by computers, but the special effects were amazing. NOTHING had ever been done like that before. Since? Of course. This was the first or original. So I don't and can't compare it to the other movies. Was it a perfect movie then or now after being "fixed"? No but there was nothing like it. At the time and still in my eyes, it's a 5 out of 5. Appreciate your review! Looking forward to the next two!
I've mentioned this to you that this is my favourite of the OG trilogy, I think Obi-Wan is really cool in this movie, Alec Guinness is great. I think its really cool that cineworld are doing the re-releases on the big screen. I get what your saying with the duel between vader and obi wan, their is another duel in the obi wan show too, so they did end up meeting again... too much star wars to keep track of 😄 I agree the score is phenomenal, John Williams does a great job with all the star wars movies tbf. Great video Mike.
😂😂 definitely feels like there is so much Star Wars at times that it can be a little daunting. However, I completely get where you are coming from and others if this is your favourite one out of the lot because it is definitely a special movie that has done so well and even holds up all these years later 🙂 I haven’t seen the Obi-Wan series as of yet but I definitely plan to get to it
Hi Mike I haven’t seen Star Wars episode four a new Hope for a long time it is a decent film 7/10 in the series. I do prefer. Empire strikes back , Star Wars Return of the Jedi
That’s a fair score mate, I think we’re pretty much the same on this one 🙂 I definitely agree that the next two movies are stronger! Thanks for watching mate as always
Can't wait to see you touch on Empire strikes back and return of the jedi! Star wars is one of the 1st things i was introduced into, SO Phenomenal and Rip to James Earl Jones. Such a LENGEDARY Movie
Loving this Star Wars revisit! 🙌 and so glad you enjoyed this classic! Not my favourite either but it never fails to put a smile on my face! There’s some excellent behind the scenes on this movie that I’d definitely recommend checking out, I’m sure you can find them on RU-vid by now 😂
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks that this one isn’t their favourite 🙂 Thank you for the heads up on the backstory of this movie, I will definitely check it out as I always love learning about that kind of stuff when it comes to movies
I can completely understand your negatives, but I have a different love and adoration for this movie. Nice to got to see it! I’m curious to see how you feel about Empire and Jedi when you see them. Nice to hear your thoughts on this
This movie is pretty good. I enjoy this one a lot. This is something that the latest Star Wars movies should definitely take notes. How was your weekend Zster. Now that you are doing star wars now, we have hope that you wont turn into the dark side.
I was really a bit bored throughout the original trilogy..... blasphemous perhaps but the truth. Never got the massive love. Totally appreciate all the elements you mentioned though, especially when it was released. I've only seen them once a while ago, so maybe my thoughts would change now.
