Vader's direct threats cloaked in sarcasm or even calmness are gold. "I find your lack of faith disturbing..." "Apology accepted, Captain Needa..." "Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate you." I don't know if these count, but I liked how he asked Lando (who was protesting the ever-changing deal) : "Perhaps you feel you're being treated unfairly...?" And then later just flat out tells him, "I'm altering the deal, pray I do not alter it any further."

It's such a menacing line, given what we know at THAT point about Vader being pretty "unforgiving" in ESB. But after seeing this movie I don't know how many times, I'm reading it in the context of Colonel B's comment nearby on this thread: the triumph in this movie is a triumph of forgiveness all round. Luke's willingness to forgive Vader instead of murdering him, and Vader's decision, maybe, to forgive himself and accept that even at the end, it's "not too late," really provides the climactic pivot point of the movie. Vader is caught halfway between Luke and the Emperor in that finale. Luke chooses forgiveness over hate. The Emperor chooses hate. When Vader's time comes to choose, it's his decision to side not just with his son over his master, but with everything Luke stands for over everything the Emperor stands for, that decides the outcome. The fact that Vader sets up this final conflict and the theme of forgiveness without knowing it in his opening speech to Moff Jerjerrod, which has always felt like a minor scene to me, is some real grade-A screenwriting, on a much higher level than mere snappy dialogue.

@@LukeMaynard I heard a theory that Vader was already plotting on betraying the Emperor, even long before the events of ROTJ, after he found out he not only had offspring, but that the Emperor lied to him about Padme's (cause of) death. Vader tried to quietly contemplate his revenge, but Palpatine, being so powerful, was able to sense it, and even asked Vader on occasion if he was still "seeing clearly" as to where his loyalties lie. Vader assured him of his loyalty and his clarity, but it's doubtful Palpatine really bought it. The two pretty much carried on as normal with an acute (if not screaming) awareness of the other's true thoughts. This is suggested to have been the genesis of Vader's turn AWAY from the Dark Side, but as I said, he was waiting for the right moment - probably knowing there'd be no do-overs. Palpatine, sensing such an inevitable conflict, probably revised his decision to destroy Luke, and instead decided use Vader one last time to turn him and replace Vader, especially since it's suggested Luke was even more powerful in the Force than Vader/Anakin was - apprentice upgrade, anyone? All this nuance (theories and canon backstory alike) is even more compelling than the story told in the films, lol.

The line is a crucial part of the Emperor's ongoing introduction too. In the original (correct) version of Empire Strikes Back, the Emperor had a line or two less than the current release. Either way though, we have seen and heard very little from him at this point. Vader saying this and the visible extra fear on the face of the guy in charge of building the second Death Star demonstrate to the audience that both of them think the Emperor is one menacing dude.

@@DenverStarkey Yeah, the instances were not only few and far between (well, that we know of in the films anyway - who knows what happened "off-screen" during those gaps of time between films), but they were not even that intense. Most of them get a lot more hype and "eww" factor than is warranted. If I recall correctly and am not missing anything, there was : 1. The quick smooch before they swung across the light bridge chasm in the Death Star, but that was a "quicky-not-icky" lesser intimate ones. 2. The big smooch in the Hoth medical center following Luke's ordeal with the Wampa, was definitely ick... lol. No mistake there. 3. The reassuring one Leia gave to Luke on the Falcon, after they rescued him from hanging onto one of the Cloud City underside aerials after getting his ass kicked by "Daddy Darth". I cannot recall if there were any all through ROTJ, or even if there was any others in the first movie, such as upon Luke's return from the first Death Star's destruction and everyone came rushing to greet him - the first of whom was Leia - she leapt into his arms with a hug and spun around so fast I couldn't see if she smooched him then, as well. At any rate, I just keep reminding myself, that despite their predilections to The Force, they just didn't know who they actually were to each other. Just one of those "undeveloped" aspects of their intuitive powers, the same as how neither Leia nor Vader seemed to sense any familial connection, that they were in fact father and daughter standing face to face (after Tantive IV's capture).

@@BlackieNuff yeah it's clear that lucas had not decided to make leia luke's sister until the third movie. and no they did not kiss a single time in RoTJ. in movie one it wasn't even a thought. in the second movie the rumour goes it was planned that luke had a sister. but it wasn't going to be leia , and that in the third movie luke would have faced her and vader and the emperor because she was the sibling that vader and the emperor had located . at least that is one of the rumors i heard. another rumor was that the third movie was going to be on kayyshiyk (the wookie home planet) not endor and luke's sister was going to be hiding with the wookies and possibly a jedi wookie no less that was training her. in this rumor the idea is that her and luke both go to face vader and the emperor. which this is the most likely rumor to be real as it is well known that lucas did want RoTJ to be on kayyshiyk and not endor. regardless of the reasoning kayyshyk as a location was dropped and lucas thinking it's late in the show to introduce another character (as well as another jedi trained character) decided that leia was to be luke's sister. still would be nice to know the validitity of these rumors. if only i could meet goerge lucas and ask him . oh well.

I believe I remember reading somewhere that at some point, Vader had distanced himself so far from who he had been before he became evil that he didn’t even think of himself and Anakin Skywalker as being the same person anymore. And then eventually it got to the point where he didn’t even want to think of his former self by name, instead simply calling the man he’d once been, “The Jedi.” With that in mind, think of the title of this movie, and what Vader ultimately does. I feel like it gives the title a brand new meaning.

He believed that Anakin and his life was gone, until the realisation that he in fact had a son. I can't believe it only just now occurred to me that Vader stopped Luke from slaying Palpatine, not out of a sense of kneejerk loyalty to his master (after all, per his own words his endgame up until this point has been to overthrow him), but in a moment of clarity in which he could not allow his son to share in his fate by going down the dark path.

Luke is such an amazing character. Instead of overcoming his father with brute force, he chooses to place his own fate in his father's hands. It's such a strong show of belief. It’s truly amazing how George really pulled back on the action in the throne room. Yes there was a fight, but the highest drama came from Luke and Vader’s conversation. In retrospect we now know just how little hope Luke had of defeating both Vader and the emperor. They are far stronger than Luke was at the time, and so turning Vader was truly the only viable option. It’s a damn good story and a brilliantly satisfying resolution .

(which is really odd as you'd think they would have gone after the gen that preceeded them [the millenials or even the GenXers] not two generations back ) the new trilogy was made by these SJW's , so naturally they want to ripp up the original cast and make them all look like aging baffoons. so their young cast can "Shine". they just happened to forget (or not care) that their target audience WAS the older generations of fans that loved those characters. sad but that is why they trashed the OG characters. they'll get theirs one day, because one day one of the younger generations will look back and do the same to them.

I'm so glad you included the line, "it's too late for me, son." That whole scene is imo the most important scene in the entire Star Wars franchise, but that line in particular is what really drives it home. For a moment we see Anakin's struggle behind the mask. i never got the hate for the special edition. sure it added a few cringe things (like alien dance numbers) , or neck bending han that didn't shoot first. but for the most part the special edition really helped flesh out the "barren" look the OG trilogy had , especially the wide city shots of Mos Eisley for instance and the cuts to other planets durring the celebrating. before none of these places felt connected , (or large in the case of mos eisley which was supposed to be a huge port). but still too many people got this idea that the theatrical releases were perfect. and they weren't. further more had lucas NOT done the special edition , the original film would have rotted away and all we would have been left with was copies instead of the actual original footage. the fact they saved the physical film and restored it when going back to make the special edition , is reason enough to be glad that they bothered.

George Lucas always considered the Original Trilogy as "The Redemption of Darth Vader". With the Emperor's death, instead of Vader inheriting the Master mantle of the Sith, he becomes a Jedi again...he becomes Anakin Skywalker, the return of the Jedi. The Emperor was using "Force Lightning", a power the Jedi never condoned the use of because of the damage it can do and the pain it can inflict. Fun fact: Lando and the Falcon weren’t supposed to make it out of the Death Star. Han’s line about “never seeing her again” was supposed to be foreshadowing this. Test audiences thought it was too much of a downer, so Lucas rewrote it so that they survived.

This is a great title. At the superficial level, it means Luke comes back to finish becoming a Jedi. At a deeper level it means Vader returns to being Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight again. And on yet another level it implies the Jedi Order is about to make a comeback now the Emperor has fallen. The Emperor's plan was nearly perfect. It failed to predict that Luke could turn Vader and that a bunch of fuzzy little bears might help defeat his forces on the forest moon.

This movie has one of the best instances of fake foreshadowing I've ever seen. You have Lando and Han talking about he promises the Falcon won't get a scratch, and then Han with that feeling of dread in his voice saying he's got a feeling he might never see it again. It's got us, the audience, about 84% sure the Falcon is going to get destroyed, which adds to the tension during the battle. But then it's fine!

I should have mentioned this in Episode V. When Episode 4 came out, African-Americans rightly pointed out that there were almost never black people in science fiction movies. George Lucas took this criticism to heart, and that's why he added Lando to the main cast in the very next movie (Empire Strikes Back, Episode 5). They have to make extra Chewbacca costumes. The fur keeps wearing off because everyone on set wants to hug him. I hated that metal bikini because Leia was a bit of a feminist heroine for a lot of girls, but it's a reference. George Lucas really knew his audience. The costume is highly reminiscent of the artwork on John Carpenter of Mars novels, particularly princess Deja Thoris. The old bearded rebel that went down to the forest Moon was retconned to be the last of the clones from the Clone Wars. They age unnaturally fast. The child actor who played the Ewok that first met Leia was the same actor who played Willow.

Why didn’t Obi Wan and Yoda think that turning Anakin away from darkness was possible, I guess they weren’t as all knowing as they thought? That’s why the Jedi failed in the past, they stagnated, and became tools of a corrupt senate. Hopefully Ray will help start a new Jedi Order that will learn from the mistakes of the past, and do better this time. They need to serve the people of the galaxy not some senate.

Addie That little furry creature who helps Leia is Wicket. His species are the Ewoks. Wicket is played by 11 years old kid actor named Warwick Davis. Davis was supposed to play another one, but his costar who is also R2-D2, late legendary little person actor, Kenny Baker gotten sick. So, George Lucas has Davis as Wicket. Since then, Warwick Davis has long career in movies such as Star Wars in other roles and as Willow Ulfgood in Willow. Davis is returning as Willow in new series based on the movie. It is slated to be on Disney+. Besides being an actor, Davis runs a talent agency named Willow Management for hiring little people for movies and TV with his father-in-law.

Even though I was really young, I remember watching each of the original trilogy movies as they came out to the theaters for the very first time. I remember watching this one back in 1983 at the theater and it was all so exciting. I was looking forward to seeing another sword fight with the lightsabers and at the beginning I found out that we get to see what the Emperor looks like because in the original versions of episodes 4 & 5 we never got a good look at him. As a 9 year old watching this for the first time, I was in heaven and the furry little Ewoks, especially Wicket, made it even better. Then when the movie finally ended, I was happy that everything had a happy ending but I was sad because, at the time, I thought there would be no more Star Wars movies.

Having had once an excellent teacher of history who knew most everything interesting and taught by anecdotes, customs and examples with old words and proverbs, quotations and eye-witness accounts, tours of Pompey and Rome and stories of Greece, I cannot recommend enough the wealth of really awesome material in books and internet about ancient Greece and Rome. Basically all of our art forms come from there, and we are the product of those ancient times. How I wish everyone could have sat through even one of his lessons - never once raising his voice, telling fantastic tales of ancient times and how people lived back then, we all listened through every lesson like hypnotized. Like one of my student pals said - this is what you expect from a lesson, not just names, facts and dates, but the essence of life back then and now. School history is but a small glimpse into all that is to be found, and as you get older the more interesting all older tales get. E.g. the astounding history of kissing through the ages has whole books dedicated to the custom.

@@DaDunge I've head it described that George thinks of dialogue like sound effects. There to add texture and clarity but not complexity or even depth. A good test of this was that they showed people who didn't speak English the films without subtitles and they still understood almost everything that was happening. I agree a lot of the lines are pretty wooden and can undermine viewer investment in the narrative, but at least a lot of the time they are clear and unambiguous.
@SchulzEricT
@SchulzEricT 2 года назад
They're not well done, they're absolutely terrible and they did a terrible job of laying the groundwork timeline-wise. EVERYBODY forgot about the force and the Jedi in 20 years? Fucking SERIOUSLY!?! Have you heard of Michael Jordan? Because I guarantee you he is less well-known then the Jedi were, but 20 years after he retired I bet everybody has still heard of him, even people who aren't basketball fans know who he is. It's INSANE that Lucas thought that made sense. The EU went back thousands of years to explore the height of the Jedi order for a reason: it made sense. So much of the prequels is incoherent when you fit it in with the OT. Also, they were terribly executed. I won't get into it for spoiler reasons, but the thing that was the most important was treated as if it wasn't important at all; the terrible dialogue and chemistry completely tanked any believability, and if we're to believe the entire point of the prequels, then that has to work, above and beyond anything else.

Hey Addie, I'm a Star wars original. I was 10 and my cousin Jade I saw Star wars in the theater in 1977. We wouldn't line for 6 hours. In the opening scene we sat there with her mouths wide open for an hour and a half. The next day we still in line for 6 hours to watch it again. It's 45 years later and Star wars still affects my life. It is so much fun to watch a younger generation experience this for the first time. Watching you watch these movies and the emotion on your face takes me back to 1977 and me and that theater. It's so enjoyable. Yes such a long journey ahead of you. The prequels we had to wait a long time for those come out. There's a lot of reasons that people have told you that a pretty close kind of suck. But what they don't understand is it's all character development development backstory and building. First one kind of sucks. But two and three build and get better and revenge of the sith was amazing. It all comes together. And then you'll be on the path you're already the Star wars girl proud of you. You've got a rogue one which is a must see I think it's one of the best Star wars movies made. Solo it's okay but if you really want to get deep then there's the clone wars the animated series which takes place between episode two and three. Then rebels which is a continuation a whole lot of backstory and character development and new characters. Then you get in the mandalorian, boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Disney series. Oh sweetie welcome to the universe it's a long and joyful ride. Again the reactions and emotions on your face watching Jedi was amazing. Anyway, May the force be with you, always. Welcome aboard. Can't wait to continue watching you're awesome ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦
