I remember something like this happening in the Star Trek community. Fans called out some higher profile Star Trek youtubers for being shills and they mocked the community, saying they weren't getting paid to like modern Star Trek, only to go and post "Thank you Paramount for sending us Star Trek themed gift baskets and inviting us to early screenings to Star Trek Picard!" You don't have to cash a check from the company to be a shill. Which is honestly worse because being paid actual money at least makes sense, but these people are so pathetic they're selling their souls for trinkets.
