The subtext is blatant - IF you're read into commie gobbledegook - and politically unengaged and illiterate 'citizens' are easy prey for what ought to be recognized and called out immediately as crass agitprop. 'Bad writing' is a second order problem here-- its purpose _"is not to persuade or convince ... _*_but to humiliate_*_ and so the less it corresponds to reality the better. when people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies - or even worse when they are force to repeat the lies themselves - they lose their sense of probity. TO assent to obvious lies is to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is eroded. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control."_ -- Theo Dalrymple

1/3 Rebuttal of your bad faith argumentation: “That’s the narrative…” That’s his opinion and he’s entitled to it, without you trying to dismiss his opinion - which is toxic behaviour. “You need to pay attention to the details.” Viewers don’t *need* to do anything. If a show doesn’t hook the viewer they won’t engage with it, and instead of being intrigued they will just find more things they dislike. If you make a show that doesn’t hook the viewer, that’s the shows problem, not the viewer. That’s bad editing, bad marketing, or both. Watching a show should not feel like work. “I don’t think he was actually paying attention to the episode.”
Why do you need to frame a video by complaining what another channel does or doesn’t do? I don’t remember Lucas ever suggesting the Jedi try to “oppress” others. Why would that be a thing that Jedi would want to do? And why would that be a creative direction for the saga? One of the recurring criticisms of Disney era SW is that they don’t seem to have a vision or plan for the franchise, and just keep rushing out spin-offs without a clear strategy. Even High Republic and Acolyte is just giving us pre-prequel Jedi, in a Jedi Order, and this whole show so far is just reiterating ideas we already saw before. When Lucas created the prequels it was flipping the story on its head, Jedi went from exile to a giant temple of Jedi and guardians of the galaxy, Sith became the individuals in hiding. We went from a rebellion to a Republic, from freedom fighters to politicians and corruption. We went from a personal story and a rebellion to a more murky time of hidden agendas and manipulation. We went from small scale sets and practical effects to vast CG hallways and opulent opera houses and in towering skyscrapers. These shows seem flat and hollow by comparison. They seem rushed into production and also badly paced; trying to make a 2 hour story into 4 or 6 hours. I also think not releasing the shows as a binge hurts them. And they only release weekly because of greed.

2/3 And I’m not surprised some fans are skeptical of Headland. Why do Lucasfilm let a creative come in and decide what is going to be canon? Is Headland going to make Star Wars projects going forwards, or just disappear like Johnson, because KK claimed she wanted to find creators who can commit years at a time. The last things fans want is one creator coming in and doing whatever personal project they feel like and then disappearing. Fans should give a creator the benefit of the doubt and some leeway, but this show looks CHEAP, like most of them do, and fans are wondering why that $180m wasn’t spent making a better Obi-Wan show or BoBF show. I don’t really understand the need to bring Wuxia into Star Wars. What’s wrong with sci-fi, westerns, samurai and fairytales? That’s plenty broad enough. The Disney era have made planets dull, lightsaber duels dull and aliens dull. the galaxy is no longer exciting. “And now it’s happening and people are saying this breaks canon.” I think these witches and the show are boring. And I think that’s the problem. It’s all very well trying to make a connection between threads and Daoism, but the Force was also a metaphor. And the cast have been a great pains to say that basically “good is a point of view” (which is not really Lucas’ intention). There is nuance between good and evil in the saga, but the cast getting excited about trying to make the Jedi look bad is weird. This has a lot TLJ vibes, where they had a choice creatively, and each time they selected something that would likely piss fans off.
@Ruylopez778
@Ruylopez778 3 месяца назад
3/3 “He obviously doesn’t understand how to watch a show and critique it and pay attention to the details.” This show has totally failed in its marketing, because Headland mentioned Frozen and Kill Bill, and is all anyone talked about. It’s all very well mocking SWT, but where did Lucas ever push the idea of Jedi being “crusaders”? Your examples are a comic and animated show from the Disney era. Why is it so important to you to control how people perceive the show. SWT gives his own opinion. “Only our people can control this.” Where did Lucas ever imply that about the Force? Pablo Hidalgo? He used to be the IT guy at Lucasfilm. I don’t know why he became the arbiter of what is and isn’t. Lucas has said that the current content isn’t what he intended. Marcia Lucas and Howard Kazanjian said JJ and KK didn’t understand the characters, Jedi, or story. Sure, all art incorporates ideas from our culture and history. But that doesn’t mean that they need to insert things like “oppression” into the saga in such a clumsy way. “They wouldn’t have been on Brendok if they hadn’t been discriminated against.” That’s not really a rational argument. You’re saying the show makes sense because what it claims is now canon. Lucas specifically said the galaxy is full of diversity in its aliens. The only ones discriminated against are droids (and droids serve the story function of the peasants in Hidden Fortress). Just saying ‘SWT doesn’t *understand* the themes’ is not a valid justification to dismiss his opinion and anyone who agrees with him. If the intention of the creator and what they want it to be about automatically overrules the subjective experience of the viewer, than there’s no reason to ever critique any art; the artist’s intentions are what the viewer must agree and comply with, regardless of whether they execute those ideas properly? That’s ridiculous. I could make the case that Headland *doesn't understand* Star Wars because she's intent on regurgitating ideas from the prequels without doing anything bold or imaginative. I could say she doesn't *understand* that inserting modern day culture topics is not the same as timeless wisdom that Lucas wove into his saga, and misses the point about good vs evil. The whole point of Lucas' work was each person could CHOOSE their own destiny and make the moral choice, and even redeem themselves through making the right choice, but there was still a clearly defined good and evil. Making a show and saying, 'but who is really good or evil' is NOT the message Lucas was ever communicating. All these Disney era creators can do is make spin-offs that commentate on what Lucas made with boring characters, instead of making something genuine new that invigorates the franchise, while working within its mindset.

People also forget that in Legends when Luke found out how the Jedi of the Old Republic handled things. He didn't like a lot of what they did, and he was more accepting of other force traditions. Correct me if I’m wrong but I was under the impression that the only reason Anakin was allowed to be trained at that age was because he was thought to be the chosen one. Also what bothers me about this show is that it undermines a singularly important event in Star Wars lore, the immaculate conception of Anakin was supposed to be a unique event exclusive to the birth of the chosen one to emphasize the importance of Anakins role in bringing balance to the force. If all of a sudden any random group of force uses can create life on a casual Tuesday, then the mystery of how Anakin was born, and the importance of his birth, is lost. I understand the distaste for Star Wars theory, but this show has bad writing that doesn’t respect the lore.
@UrbanAcolyte

The show doesn't undermine Anakin's birth. Pay attention to the details. Don't add anything that isn't explicitly stated. In my Hebrew Bible class, I watched 1/4 of my classmates fail an exam for inferring something that WAS NOT explicitly stated.
@incy000
@incy000 3 месяца назад
@@UrbanAcolyte sometimes things don’t need to be explicitly stated to be understood. This isn’t the Hebrew bible filled with parables and teachings for real world problems, this is Star Wars. If every show constantly stated why specific things were happening, people would have no reason to use their brain and engage in the show to try to figure out what’s going on. They wouldn’t need to, so we can’t establish a baseline where information can only be confirmed if it is explicitly stated, also I just want to say I respect your opinion and am not trying to sound arrogant or angry!

Almost everyone predicted what was happening in the show, nearly everyone knew that qimir what's going to be the supposed secret sith Lord it was so obvious and then by episode 4 you have to be mentally ill and brain dead to somehow be shocked at the sith reveal. The story was marketed as a sith POV story and for 98.9 percent of the show it was nothing like that. The extended universe did the sith point of view story way better with the Darth plagueis novel, and the Darth bane trilogy of novels... Go read or listen to the audiobook version of those for a real sith story that's infinitely better than this trash

Ever since the sequels people just changed they will just hate on anything that Star Wars comes out with. I think they have forgotten the true theme of Star Wars which is escaping your own reality to go and watch Star Wars and have fun with it. I like the acolyte I don’t think that it will be anywhere up to clone wars or rebels but I like it that is my opinion, and guess what nobody is going to change that by trying to bully me or put their opinion up on a pedestal compared to mine. This interconnectedness is why the jedi usually take a wait an see approach. It's why anakin and luke were cautioned about rushing into action and why luke in the last jedi refused to act. There will be hundreds of groups of people in the galaxy who can use/worship/manipulate etc…the force. Many will have different cultures and probably not even call it the force. The galaxy is huge! I usually like Theory and his videos, but listening to him talking about Acolyte is just draining. I feel like his mind was already made up about the show before it came out, and now he’s just being hypocritical while trying to deconstruct every aspect of the show. Literally each one of his criticisms has a counterpoint to it, which is a little annoying knowing that he’s actually a massive Star Wars fan and should have the knowledge to know why things are the way they are.

I disliked Episode 3. I liked Episode 4. The Theory watch party had their mind made up before Ep 4 began. In Ahsoka, they talk about 'the thread' throughout the whole show. Even Shinhati says to Baylin, "Master, what thread is she spinning" and he responds, "No, this is not witchcraft" so it's understood witches believe in "threads." Also, after Ep 4, everyone starts commenting "they fly now" as if literally EVERY Jedi, has not jumped super far across canyons, out of windows 10 stories in the air, etc. But they can't handle one jumping off a branch of a tree onto the ground. It's like group think on both sides, Disney and Theory's chat are guilty of it on both sides. It seems like the fans aren't capable of nuance. Again, Ep 3 was bad imo. Ep 4 was not bad. Think for yourselves and don't hate the episodes before it begins. Watch it and decide for yourself, if you can make a good argument for disliking it, fine. But I saw the watch party, Theory and chat disliked it BEFORE they saw Ki-Adi-Mundi in the credits.

The Song of Fire and Ice was a story that encapsulated virtually everything interesting about that universe. It would have made more sense to build around one of the more prominent stories alluded to in the series like when the Targaryens/ Valeryons went to the unnamed Magic lands where they absconded with the dragons, or the first encounter with the Undead that required all houses to contribute to building the great wall and guarding it. Or they could have followed Arya Stark on her Odyssey beyond the known world, or They could have honed in on the etymology of the Lord of Light or God of Many Faces or how the faces got on some trees.….but No, no they have to try wring every last penny out of the IP by starting in the most bland corners of the timeline first. They decided to tell a story about feeble man and his mostly corrupt family squabbling over assets that none of them earned it’s a story anyone could have easily imagined based on GOT and the first few appearance of Veseryus Targaryen and his lack of capability. At this point you just want to engage in an argument, I know you’re falling asleep like everyone else until the dragons show up. The difference is pretty simple actually…In GOT there isn’t a clear competition of ideologies that inherently lends itself to being re-wrapped a multitude of times.
@Imhotep397
@Imhotep397 3 месяца назад
@PennyForMyThoughts-ry3nw So were the people that enjoyed the Prequels on release and you see how that turned out over time. (I happened to be one). As time goes on and the social “concerns” of today that are projecting from some corners weighing far too heavily on the stories melt away people will admit that it was better than it was treated on release and HOD was treated better than it deserved. In Star Wars there’s always at least two of these well known ideologies in conflict that everyone is familiar with and can relate to.

Ive come to a bit of a realisation with the old eu vs the new canon, at least from my limited look at the expanded universe. The eu seems to treat the force and the abilities of the sith and jedi like categorizable super power or videogame abilities, you have sith in classes learning how to do force lightning in the darth bane novel, for example, whereas the force in the disney canon seems to take more from real world theology, mythology and spiritual and occult practices with the force being more nebulous and neuanced . I see a lot of the sith's dealings with other force religions (other than jedi) like the colonial occultists of the victorian times, travelling the galaxy, finding little secrets of the force that others have developed through their own interpretations and combining what works, and what's most useful and twisting it for their own gain and power. Some of the people complaining that it breaks canon seem to think that the sith must have just leveled up high enough to cheat death or throw lighting or control minds. It reminds me a lot of the chronically online people who discuss character power levels and if goku can beat superman.

Arguments in this video there are nothing but straw man argument and what about isms.. he also got several points of information about this show wrong and didn't even understand that the acolyte broke high Republic Cannon and got the kyber crystal bleeding Cannon incorrect... Vernestra (green lady) was character assassinated hard in the accolade from her portrayal in the high Republic novels, she's a completely different person in the show and no one talks about it and whenever you talk to people about it who Loved this show they just get butthurt and try to deny it and then when you cite your sources and list all the novels she was in they just block you and it's really funny because it seems like most of the act like fans don't know anything about the lore that they are that they're defending

@troubleondemand7703 12 дней назад
@@ninvusoogoar6098 I admit I am not up to date on all the Republic canon, but isn't she much younger in the novels? Like over 100 years younger? The reason I ask is because one of the themes of the show seems to be how the bureaucracy of the Jedi was one of the components that led to their downfall. It is my understanding that in the books she had not yet ascended to the level she was at within the order and that working within that bureaucracy changed her over time. And let's be real here. Star Wars have never been 'perfect' as far as canon and lore goes. The Acolyte certainly wasn't, but, I sill enjoyed it because I love Star Wars. I have for over 40 years now. I find it funny how fans are getting all nitpicky now over writing and dialog when the OG trilogy was full of campy dialog, not to mention the prequels. But whatever man, you do you and I'll do me. I don't like to waste time on negativity because it serves no real purpose.
@ninvusoogoar6098
@ninvusoogoar6098 12 дней назад
@@troubleondemand7703 negativity is no worse then positivity, you need both in life and only an idiot would only want positivity or negativity. The issue with Verne in her betrayal on the acolyte compared to the novels is she's two completely different characters down to her motivations and personality. She would never do any of the choices that she didn't act like because she's not a scumbag type character she's actually an extremely hopeful and wise character in the novels. Problem is changing a character so drastically then so completely off screen over a Time Gap is really trash writing. It's the same problem people had with Luke Skywalker in The last Jedi movie where they took a character and completely and utterly changed every facet of him to the degree that it's not the same character anymore and they did it off screen. Having an 80 year time gap between the novels and the acolyte is no excuse for her portrayal shown in the TV show. It's bad writing and it's Cannon breaking. In the show break several bits of Cannon elsewhere in the novels as well as the kyber crystal bleeding seen. and you're more than welcome to like bad shows I like the Sharknado movies but I would never lie to people and say they're good. It is 100% okay to enjoy the show, my motto is it's okay to like a bad movie or show so long as you're honest about its quality or lack thereof. That's why I like monster movies but I would never lie to someone and say they're good simply because I enjoyed them, you get me There's a major difference between campy writing and bad writing, I know Disney fans love to try to blur those lines because it tries to make Disney seem more competent than they really are, however does a disservice to the fandom and to Star wars itself to try to compare the two in that fashion. And always keep this in mind true fans of something do not blindly love anything that has the branding, those are called casuals or brand fans. Real fans are people who are fans of the contents portrayal and how close it is to the spirit of the franchise, be a Tolkien be at Warhammer Star Trek or Star wars. Being a fan does not mean you have to like or love everything in Star wars, a lot of people have that misconception but they're wrong. And like I said you are allowed to like the acolyte no one can take that from you. And positivity for the sake of positivity serves no purpose either other than to Huf copium. And like I said you need both the positive and the negative in life and same with our entertainment having a negative opinion is not a bad thing so long as you're able to articulate it, we're going to details about it. The same goes for positivity and a lot of people tend to forget that toxic positivity is just as bad if not worse than negativity at its worst. Also no one's ever made the claim that Star wars is perfect but there's a far cry difference between some of the Campiness and silliness of the original trilogy or prequel trilogies and then just horrible writing bad plot and horrible character development from the Disney stuff, to such a degree that most scenes do not function in universe in a logical way.. where the prequels and the original trilogy actually do function in the universe. I know it's pretty common for Disney fans to try to make the Lucas stuff look bad in order to try to prop up the bad Disney stuff, it's a bit silly and I never understood why but I just chalked it up to weird Disney adults or something like that.

This really makes things a lot more clear knowing full well how star wars is based on religion and there is a lot of things that have happened in history that you can compare to things that happen in this show, and I think this show is doing a good job of changing our perception of the jedi and showing how that they want to be solely responsible for anyone who is force sensitive and if you are not a jedi you are considered a sinner so to speak if you are force sensitive without practicing or using the force based on their beliefs. The jedi killed the witches because they were using the force in a way that is considered forbidden and because they were afraid that they could shift their control of the galaxy

I don't think he understands Star Wars properly. His scope of Star Wars is limited to the Prequels and the Clone Wars. The Jedi order was basically taking children at an early age and training them as child soldiers. The way things were portrayed was "everyone is 2D and cool with it". The reality is that they weren't and I'm glad this show did that. There reasons why they didnt take older younglings when Anakin's turn came around and this might have been the basis for that. But I also think that this rule was periodically broken over thousands of years and was reinforced every few generations. I can't even begin to start on the Witches and magic in Star Wars - its been around forever. We know Palpatine and Plageius dabbled in it and probably learned about how to create life from there. People engaging in culture wars gave a product to sell - in this case... replica lightsabers. More eye balls = more sales. Also I had no idea you were posting again. I loved your stuff.

Awesome video! It's great to have a more insightful conversation than the constant polemic overdramatization. I love geeking out about Star Wars, so thanks for that. I still think the show is trash, but not for most of the discussed reasons. Your points are all 100% valid and I agree with you. However, I feel the story and ideas in the Acolyte are not well executed. I felt that everything so far in the first 4 episodes is trying to set up some big revelations in the later part of the series, but it's done poorly. Keep in mind, that this is an established IP where most 'fans' are unaware of the EU. The biggest issue on that front for me is how all the characters and world-building have been handled from the very beginning. The motivations of the characters are unclear which makes their actions unrelatable to viewers and that's where all those problems arise from. What made the original movies work so well was that they immediately established the personality and motivations of all main characters as well as the setting basically in their very first scenes. It takes the viewers along on the journey, the Acolyte does not. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I really don't like this lame mystery box writing in a lot of the newer Star Wars entries. Halfway through the show, it's still unclear why characters do what they do. Meh... way too much of a discussion to have in a comment section. Thanks again for the video, looking forward to more.

GREAT to see you again dropping gems about Stars Wars being influenced by Eastern philosophy. But of course, Star Wars Theory would overlook little details like that! Just like I wouldn’t expect someone like him to give a shred of acknowledgment, or appreciation for anything other than a “western” perspective when it comes to everything dealing with Star Wars…If you know what I mean.☝🏿😉 People like him fear seeing & hearing other people’s voices in “their” idea of what Star Wars is supposed to be like. That’s why the usual suspects are at it AGAIN and spewing their typical sexist, racist and hateful views on a show that has the nerve to showcase something different. The show itself is AWESOME!! But guys like Star Wars Theory are ONLY interested in hating it because it is different. That’s really as deep as it gets with that segment of the fandom.🤭 IF it’s about great storytelling and writing, like they say, have them talk about why HAN SOLO HIMSELF, famously criticized the writing of the OT, saying that the lines look better on paper, than said out loud? …Wonder how they’re able to overlook details like THAT, as fans.🧐

Wait, he thought the witches contradict how the Force is seen? But... they don't. 😆 I thought everybody knew that multiple Force-religions referred to it by different terms, and take different approaches. But it's all the same kind of thing, an energy that binds all things. The thing about "pulling the thread" does remind me a bit of the Path of the Open Hand, though, and their fear that using the Force in any way could lead to negative consequences. Though the Brendok witches don't seem as concerned, being Force users themselves. The connection to Indra's Net is something I hadn't considered though. I should really refresh myself on that one.

Prince, it is amazing to hear your thoughts again on SW content - I've always appreciated and learnt a lot from your knowledge on Eastern philosophy etc, but most of all keeping it real, not afraid to say it how it is and call people out. SWT - the guys arrogance and entitlement is off the scale these days and acts like the voice for all of SW fandom - he has an agenda against LucasFilm and Disney. He was butt hurt he wasn't invited to SWCE 23. Has every content that has come out in the last few years been perfect? No definitely not, but not every bit of content is going to be for everyone. We need more voices like yours right now in the community. Honestly Prince, I'm stoked you're doing SW content again and I sincerely hope life is treating you well. Much love from the UK.

I used to like Star Wars theory but it’s clear he has an agenda against anything Disney does with Star Wars good or bad. I personally like the show so far and am looking forward to the last 4 episodes

@PennyForMyThoughts-ry3nw dumb? It’s pretty clear since Disney shot down his fan made film project from collecting revenue from donations. that’s why he’s been super critical of Disney Star Wars good or bad. It has nothing to do with him actually having a neutral perspective on anything. All I hear him do is cry and complain about everything. he can’t point out one good detail when it comes to the acolyte.

@PennyForMyThoughts-ry3nw the only people complaining about this show are clearly fans that will never be happy no matter what Star Wars does. I’ve seen multiple content creators that actually like this show. Not to mention everyone is judging this show without even knowing the complete story yet. Star Wars fans of this generation are spoiled I remember when I was young all I had were the original 3 films and I would watch those three films every day as a kid. Now as an adult I’m so happy to be getting all the content we are on Star Wars. Everyone needs to quit complaining and just let these storylines play out. In filoni we trust

Dude, don't attack other toutubers. You are good enough to get the success you deserve just by doing you star wars content.

First, WELCOME BACK BRO...Your presence was definitely missed. Your reappearance is timely, given the current state of the fandom. An informed, measured and fair voice is precisely what's needed amongst SW content creators.🤜🏿🤛🏾 Now, as for Theory... I stopped following him earlier this year, when he revealed himself to be as toxic and problematic as many of his followers, evidenced by the comment threads under his vids. This video helps confirm my decision. You're too kind/diplomatic to be this blunt, so I'll state the fact: Theory has leaned into the darkside of the fandom. He agrees with, feeds off of, and promotes the hate generated by a loud minority of fans. They complain about "agendas", yet will apply their own in an attempt to undermine Lucasfilm. Theory and his hateful sycophants were critical of The Acolyte before one scene was shown. This is in direct response to the series' inclusion of POC and members of the LGBTQ+ community; not to mention their longstanding hatred for anything Disney since the sequels (The Mandalorian being a rare exception). As such, they can no longer be trusted to fairly comment/critique on the property. Please ignore the haters, and continue to add your important voice to productive dialogue concerning all things SW... God bless, and welcome back!
