Fun fact. All the special effects in this film were made by Industrial Light and Magic. Lucasarts visual effects team. With George Lucas's personal approval and support. He loved the idea of this parody.
@@TheGeekheads If you look at the escape pods from the head of the Megamaid, you'll see that they used footage from "A New Hope" to make that scene. Same as the escapepod from the Tantive IV that C3P0 and R2 escaped in. :)
@danadnauseam That was due to Lucas himself. He only allowed the movie to be made, if and only if Brooks promised not to sell merchandise for the movie, as to not confuse Star Wars fans. Parents came be a behind when it comes what toys kids want most. So Brooks added a ton of fake merchandise in the film as a joke
@@zenhaelcero8481Spaceballs the comment directed to you, (the guy who ruined a perfectly executed, comment/reply joke by saying something dumb just to be in on it), thus further plunging this once perfect thread into chaos.
Mel Brooks needed to get approval from George Lucas to avoid copyright infringement. Lucas loved it but because he was about to reissue the movies with the now-famous digital enhancements he insisted that Brooks should not dress Lone Star like Han Solo. So Mel dressed him like Indiana Jones. Lucas also insisted there be no merchandising from Spaceballs so as not to conflict with new Star Wars toys. That requirement led to the creation of the merchandising scene.
Mel Brooks didn't need to get approval from George Lucas, because parody is specifically protected by copyright law. However, physical merch has slightly different laws, and _would_ have needed George's approval.
Great reaction, you caught most of the jokes. Here are a few more things: 1. Chapter Eleven is a bankruptcy filing in the U.S. So the beginning of the crawl contains a joke to start. 2. "When did we get to Disneyland?" was a reference to the dwarves of Snow White. 3. The Mercedes was a 2001 model, and they had that guy on the big drums on the bridge, both references to 2001: A Space Odyssey. 4. Entering Yogurt's merchandising operation was a very direct parody of The Wizard of Oz. The four characters were parallels, the intimidation with the flames and booming voice, etc. 5. The chest burster and John Hurt were from the original Alien. The song and dance exit comes from a very famous Warner Brothers cartoon, One Froggy Evening (1955) about a singing frog. Definitely worth seeing, no spoilers. 6. The music in the "wandering across the desert" scene was almost directly from Lawrence of Arabia. And the Dink-Dinks were dinking along to Colonel Bogie's march, used in Bridge on the River Kwai. 7. The Millennium Falcon was also parked at the diner at the end, but blink and you miss it. I see that other commenters are telling you all about the George Lucas angles, so I will defer to them. Fun time!
Thanks! I haven't yet seen Wizard of Oz if I'm being honest😅 i did get the Alien reference but for some reason couldn't put my finger on what movie it was from. Thanks for watching! ~ Nyfbie
And Bridge on the River Kwai starred Alec Guiness. The superduper long shot of Spaceball 1 at the beginning was a nod to the Nostromo from Alien. The Chambers of the Great Know It All were the exact same set used in Wizard of Oz (other than the Yogurt statue).
@@TheGeekheads check out the TV show firefly, there is a little game you can play find the Han Solo in carbonite in most episodes. i forget the exact reason but if i recall correctly the cast got wind that another member of the crew, I think the director, was a big fan of Star Wars. So they got a toy Han Solo in carbonite and hid him on the sets. A lot of them got removed or cut due to fear of Lucas suing or some such. I think 10 or so survived and went unnoticed till fans spotted them.
It's double reference ... it's about the bankruptcy, and also explains why they do so many merch-skits (which are all fake ofc, there was no spaceballs merch) BUT, it's also a reference that the first Star Wars movie was Chapter 4 of the story...
3:08 this is because of one of the terms George Lucas gave Mel Brooks to be able to make the movie. He wasn't allowed to let his male lead dress like Han Solo, so Mel Brooks dressed him as Indiana Jones which is one of Harrison Ford's other major roles instead
As others have said George Lucas did like the idea and script and let Mel Brooks use his props department but he had a couple of conditions 1. They couldn't make merchandise for the movie hence the jokes about merchandise in the movie. And 2. Lone Starr couldn't look like Han Solo so that's why he looks like Indiana Jones.
George Lucas approved Brooks' idea for a parody on one condition. Lone Star was not to look like Han Solo. Brooks agreed and made him look like Indiana Jones instead 😂
3:05 Yeah, they were told they were not allowed to make him look like Han solo. So instead they made him look like Harrison Ford's other big character Indiana Jones.
Fun fact: Bill Pullman played Lone Starr, his Winnebago space ship is called “Eagle 5”, which is the same pilot name given to Bill Pullmans character as the President in Independence Day.
Funny movie to watch. No one has ever mentioned this in the comments. I think when they enter the ear of the spaceballs ship, it's a reference to the Sci-Fi movie "Fantastic Voyage" from 1966??? I am the only one who noticed this?
It's great to see younger people get interested in these classic comedies. I would recommend most Mel Brooks features like Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Dracula: Dead and Loving It, Young Frankenstein, History of the world Part 1, and Blazing Saddles. And you may want to see ALIEN.
I love classic comedies! I've seen Blazing Saddles before (I'm a huge western fan haha) but not the others. We will definitely react to them in the future!
Had to tell you guys this story. My daughter and I cosplay as Barf and Dark Helmet as you can see in my profile pic. Earlier this year we got to meet Hayden Christensen, Rosario Dawson and Natasha Bordizzo for a photo opp!! When I walked in done up as Barf...literally all three of them GEEKED out a bit! Rosario hit me with the "He's a MOG, he's his own best friend line!" My daughter and I have had more fun watching people reacting to our cosplay of this movie, SO many celebrities just laughing so hard, to too funny!!!
Spaceballs is the best Star Wars movie and Galaxy Quest is the best Star Trek movie. You need to love both franchises to really love the parodies because a fantastic parody can only be done by someone who truly loves the original.
100% agree! And we will also do a reaction to Galaxy Quest in the future after we have seen some more Star Trek first, so that we can fully appreciate the movie.
@@TheGeekheads galaxy Quest was voted by Star Trek super fans as one of the best Star Trek films. It’s technically a parody and billed as such but it’s really a love letter in ways Space Balls isn’t. I don’t want to give too much away and I love both films. You could probably enjoy Galaxy Quest just as a geek even if you don’t know Star Trek that well- the characters are a mix of archetypes from both original and TNG plus many unique to GQ.
Okay, interesting🤔 even so I personally think these parody movies are best watched after seeing the original stuff it's based on. But we'll get to Galaxy Quest at some point too, I promise!
We haven't yet, but we'll definitely react to it in the future! But I think we still have some more Star Trek to watch before we should react to Galaxy Quest, we've only seen one movie so far😬
Another Star Wars parody you should check out is Team StarKids' musical parody called Ani. They parody other things as well, but Ani is unique in that the band sings all the songs (kind of like backing tracks for movies). Ani focuses on Anakin (Darth Vader) as he wanders down memory lane and thinks back on a past love. There are allusions to the films and it would be fun to see how much you catch. Being posted on RU-vid directly from Team StarKid, you could watch and react to the show in its entirety (if you want) with little to no editing necessary. Just a fun thought for those who like Star Wars content.
If there are any Mel Brooks movies that either of you has not seen yet, you should do reactions to them. However, before you watch Robin Hood Men in Tights, you should have already seen Kevin Costner's Robin Hood movie...the one with Morgan Freeman in it. And before you watch High Anxiety by Brooks, you probably should be familiar with the films of Alfred Hitchcock...in particular The Birds, Spellbound, Vertigo, and Psycho. 😁
You call it taking shots, and that is how things are viewed these days. But really, it was taking homage, inspiration, nothing negative. Or is 'taking shots' seen as something somehow positive now? Not really a fan of the editing, lots of humor and your reaction to it is cut. I'm left unsure if you genuinely didn't get those parts as funny or not being worth showing. What WAS shown was good reacting though.
Oh yeah for sure, we used the term taking shots more as lighthearted teasing/joking, nothing negative. I guess it's a generational difference of how the term is used. My original edit was 30 minutes longer but some jokes where our reaction was only just a light chuckle or that we compelety missed had to be cut because RU-vid wouldn't count it as fair use anymore and the video would've been copyrighted and blocked in most countries. We'll try to make the videos longer in the future Thanks for the feedback, we always appreciate it!
Spot the references Alien Dancing/Singing Frog, a very old cartoon meme Planet of the Apes Parody (music) and spoof (film) are recognized as forms of humor and art and are respected as such but if there are contracts and agreements to protect creative works, you can have agreements to produce a spoof with no issues so most everyone is happy. Next: "Hardware Wars" is a must see if you are a Star Wars fan. There is the original version and a special edition with added effects.
“Dancing/Singing Frog A very old cartoon meme” -you don’t say?? You’re a lot of help, genius. Please see @mikejankowski’s comment for a useful, much better informed explanation.
We have been currently both travelling which is why we haven't been able to react to more Star Trek yet sadly or have content coming more regularly. Actually the reception that our first reaction got took us by surprise so we hadn't realized to pre-record more. BUT we will do a bunch more Star Trek reactions starting later this month once we're both back! 😄
@@TheGeekheads Thank you for responding to my question. May I ask, what country are you from? Better yet do you plan on having a live stream Q&A at some point?
We're from Finland🇫🇮 And we could absolutely do a Livestream Q&A someday! I've been wanting to expand to other kind of videos and livestreams in the future anyways😄 ~ Nyfbie
