As creepy as it is, there's actually an element of realism to this. There have been recorded cases of siblings separated during childhood eventually meeting each other and forming romantic relationships in real life. When siblings grow up together, a certain reverse psychological imprinting takes places to prevent romantic attraction and minimize the occurrence of incest but when family members are separated during formative years this doesn't occur and people can get confused and misinterpret their own feelings. So the lesson here is, try to keep your family together.

The key to a great franchise is appeal to what the fans truly want. Star Wars did just that.

To be fair, George Lucas was making it up as he was going along. Initially Anakin and Vader were supposed to be separate people, then he developed daddy issues between Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back so he rewrote the part to make Vader and Anakin one and the same. This is why it's written in Star Wars that Obi Wan says, "only a master of evil, Darth" as if Darth was his first name and not a sith title. Roll on Return of the Jedi and he suddenly gets this idea to make Leia Luke's sister and there's none of the smoochy stuff happening between them in this movie which shows his change in direction from the previous films.

The fact that Rey was never actually intended to be related to Kylo, and was originally supposed to be some nobody that happened to be force sensitive was a very conscious and aware decision by Disney to retcon her entire backstory in favour of throwing in a bit of incest

To be fair, the incest in the OG trilogy was unknowingly done, and there is a weird phenomenon where genetic family, when separated at early ages, are reunited later in life find each other attractive, either through similar behavior patterns, or because of similarities in genetic features. Essentially natural narcissism makes you want to bone your siblings if you don't know they are your siblings. Obviously every (I would hope it's every) time the two find out they were related all along, there's mutual feelings of disgust because our logical brains recognize that incest babies are gross. Technically Palpatine isnt Anakin's father. He was born of the force, and it would have Darth Plageius, who was Palpatine's predecessor, that would have used the force to create Anakin

This gets even better when you realize that kylo and rey were originally planned to be siblings, only for carrie fisher to die before the rise of skywalker could be filmed, forcing J.J. Abrams to change the twist at the last minute. (In case anyone doesn’t find it completely obvious that rey was supposed to be the daughter of han and leia, you should just know that early drafts of the force awakens planned for rey to have the surname ‘solana’ - re: solo-organa.
