LOL, you had me rolling at the slide viewer joke/$20 dollar filament decision!! love your channel bro!! you inspired me to finish my office/studio transformation. thank you and your wife are both so creative, what a blessing!!
It’s extremely satisfying when you find something existing (hardware) and it fits right in, so you don’t have to mess around with modifying something you maybe only have one of.
The Smugglers Room occasionally I have to reign myself in and throw out piles of various debris and foam scraps I have saved up. At a certain point, that dime sized piece of EVA foam in a pile of 50 other dime sized pieces of EVA foam isn’t worth keeping. 😂
Great build, although I'm curious why you wouldn't have used the camera cluster as the source of the light, rather than adding on the pill-shaped light on the back. Just kind of seems unnecessary when you're already using a prop in a new way from how it was used in the movie.
ahhh . . . I know, it really does seem now, after the fact, that I missed the mark on that. I don't have a good reason, I thought about it, and then changed my mind and ended up with something that overall looks like an afterthought. I think this project was a bit more of a challenge, and probably got a little rushed at the end. I actually started this back in early September. Next time . . . next time.
I know Im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account?? I stupidly forgot the account password. I would love any tips you can give me!
Intro had me rolling "Son of a......" BWAHAHA. Awesome work I love the Camera head and base of the lamp and the orange acrylic is SWEET!!! It appears the old arm from the lamp is not sturdy enough for the new Lamp head and wobbles a bit.
Thank you so much, we had fun with that intro. You are 110% correct on the base. I absolutely should have shown why, and more over, i should have addressed the issue. The lamp base had this huge piece of metal in the base that was molded to the shape. I removed it thinking I wouldn't need it because I was bolting the lamp base to the base . . . big fail. The lamp needs taken apart and the void filled with something solid to fix the issue. It's stable, but it leans to the right and it really bothers me.
Thanks for sharing and I personally enjoy the fact that you share this mis-steps in your builds as we all benefit in the learning experience. Keep up the awesome work and witty humor. Till next time......
Thank you Wes, we plan to include more of those aspects to the builds as well as misses and failures. We think there is a good deal of value in sharing that too. Thanks for watching!
Dude this lamp is awesome, love your honesty regarding the build; seeing your thought process is so valuable to others who want to create cool stuff like this. Creating something and looking at it objectively is all part of the process, and the making learning experience. The fact you always share this is another reason I love this channel so much. keep up the great work, you continue to inspire and for that I thank you!!!!!!
Nice work as always Brian. The lenses look amazing and the whole aesthetic came out really well. And man, that bottom lit screen in the base just makes it so cool. :)
Looks great, particularly the base with that orange panel. When you started, I expected the light to come out the front of the camera cases and wondered how that'd work. Made more sense in the end.
Good video. I may not have the fancy equipment to do some of this stuff, but it's nice to also see trial and error. Some builders edit out their mistakes or don't highlight what they could have done better. It's nice to know that even experienced prop makers have issues with things. It helps me as an amateur feel like I suck less when I mess up because most of the time what you see from prop videos is perfection and that can be disheartening at times. The Smuggler's Room is still one of the top channels for Sci-Fi props! Funny personality and a good mix of content! Perhaps some of the acrylic work could be done with an engraving tool of some type? Way less expensive (and less accurate) than a laser cutter, but maybe it could accomplish a similar effect?
Hey there Jay, thank you so much! We realize that when we do projects with some of these high end tools that not everyone has access, but we are trying to make sure there is a variety. We need to do better about showing how something could be done without the fancy tools when we use them, so I promise we’ll work on that. Your dremel and acrylic idea is a great example. As far as the mistakes, we should be showing more of them. We make them all the time and that is just a part of learning. I am far from perfect and mess up all the time. It’s how we grow and get better at making. Thank you so much for the feedback and for watching what we do, we can’t tell you how much we appreciate it!
So worth the wait dude, as always! Great project. Jealous of the laser cutter though... I would really like to see a star wars themed integrated desktop/laptop computer base, like it would fit in a star destroyer bridge or something? That would be so cool.
The Heathen Diaries DUdE!!! Have you been looking at my notes?? Did you sneak into my laptop and look up our “SciFi inspired Desk?” LOL!!! Just kidding, but yes sir . . We have the plans!
Looks great! But I thought you would be putting lights in each one facing slightly different directions. Then where you put the two metal pieces sticking out would be tiny cameras. That way you could use to light the room or your desktop and take videos from the cameras. Put movement/sound sensor on it and have great security light.
Yeah, we did miss the boat on adding lighting to each one. Kinda bummed out that I changed my mind and didn't do that. Maybe on the next one . . . cause there is always a next one😂
@@TheSmugglersRoom your so creative, other than subscribing and hitting that bell icon, I wish I could do more to support you, and even more, follow along with your projects, and maybe make, and share my own one day, but keep it up, and I'll keep watching!
Good work! When we can see a video talking about your machines?? Laser cut,CNC..I will love to hear your experiencies about all of that! Maybe a special feature?.
Thank you much! We actually fully intend to do that very thing. We are anxious to get some major updates to our Room project in December, and in order to do that we have some major upgrades to the overall shop. So in late November we will be showing some updates of the shop with an awesome Sci-Fi twist, and once we get upgraded we have plans for an in depth series on the shop and tools that we will likely upload on a separate day so that we can still show projects . . . wow, sorry that was a lot of words :) . Thanks so much for watching!
Honestly, I like to see a growing new channel. Yeah, you got the concept, the gear, the background, a good face who can talk, well done scripts, editing, the whole image, targeting etc... Yes, it's all ok. I say congrats to all of u (or just you), because I can't spell congrariutioation
take a rubber mold of the lenses , use clear resin mixed with a little acrylic paint , dont go over board with the paint or the resin wont set. then you can make as many as you want
The only thing I would have done different would have been to replace the black lenses on the 6 housings with white styrene plastic and put the LEDs behind them so that the 6 housings are the lamps...just a thought...
Great job love the fact you still have that chubby kid inside but the most upfront portion of you if you know what I mean lol. I still feel like that 15yr old it makes us happier people I think. Have you ever met people who have lost their kid inside not so happy. Lol. Really dig your channel I'm glad to see you this week. I look forward to seeing your channel and CRAFSMAN. keep the inner kid alive and KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO
Absolutely agree Aaron. That inner kid is what carries me through life, i would be lost without it. We grow up too fast, and some of us lose that imagination, creativity, and willingness to just be a kid. We hope, and our biggest goal with this channel is to help everyone re-connect with their inner kid . . . be it chubby or otherwise 😉 . Thanks for watching!
I think Phillip has the molds for the lenses- I know he bought out Blue Realm. I could ask Devin and Charlie as well. This would have been a great molding and casting project- I’m jealous!!!
Phillip is 100% exactly who I was going to reach out to. He was the person that turned me on to Blue Realm in the first place. Not sure why they stopped selling them?
Awesome build Dude ! Just curious what the cylinder shaped threaded pieces you ran the power lines through are? hopefully it's something I can purchase and not 3D printed ,I have the perfect use for one of those on one of my current builds.
Looks awesome as always Brian! Totally worth the wait! I appreciate you sharing your mistakes too. There's usually a point in every project where I think I've messed up beyond the point of return, makes me feel less defeated to know that even great results like this often come with a few bumps in the road. Now then.....Very interested to see how that astromechy looking thing you had on instagram turns out..... what ever it is that you're planning on doing with it?!?
Thank you Luke. When we started the channel I sort of avoided showing the mistakes, but over time I have realized that showing them will help others to maybe avoid them. I also totally believe that the "mistakes" are really how we learn. I honestly wish I would have shown more over the last year. now the new build . . . I am so excited for it that I can't sleep. We are just hoping it turns out as cool as it is in our heads!
oh shoot! Yes absolutely. I will do my best to get those files, along with the pattern for the base .svg files up too. So sorry, i totally forgot about that.
@@TheSmugglersRoom no apologies needed, just curious since I have a printer and that would be a project I could do amd save time not having to design those. Cheers!!
Brian I know I'm going to catch hell for this question, but I need to know! What is the design your lazer etched into your orange acrylic? Is it a Star Wars reference? I don't recall seeing that design. Thanks brotha!
Tracy Halladay LOL, no problem. It’s actually the graphic that appears on the large screen in the Death Star shortly after Tarkin says, “you may fire when ready.” The graphic appears on the screen as a representation of the planet being destroyed. If you watch A New Hope, just before they destroy Alderan you’ll see it.
I've been around for a long time now. I feel stupid for missing it. I also heard your reply of "you may fire when ready" in Tarkin's voice! I have no excuse for not knowing that. It is extremely cool that you take the time to respond to our questions. If you are ever in the Salt Lake City area for your "awesome day job" Let me know and I'll buy you dinner. :)
I have to say, when you put the LED setup on the back so it aimed below the camera, I felt a little disappointed - I'd been waiting to see you rig up the cameras to be the lights themselves.. I thought that'd be so gnarly..
Yep, trust me, total fail on our part. It’s something that has bothered me since day one. My thought at the time was the cameras would be too much as a light . . . But I really should have gone that route. Live and learn.
@@TheSmugglersRoom could have set it up on a rotary switch setup so you could turn on one, then additional with each stage on the switch.. I was toying with all manner of thoughts after watching..
If I had a boom arm desk lamp like that and wanted to Star Wars it up, instead of the death star camera's I would have made it look like the Jabba's palace door droid.
ha ha ha! Its so funny, we have been crunching trying to get our merch on the website, and I never once thought of that. I might have to steal that idea my friend.
Tramaine Thornberry you absolutely could. I didn’t want to mold these as they were created by Blue Realm Studios, and they did all the original work, I wouldn’t want to recast their stuff.
kumo KNS we have this file and many more on our Patreon Page. We also upload new files every week. Some are 100% free for the entire public, and others are reserved for our Patrons. www.patreon.com/thesmugglersroom
@@TheSmugglersRoom I'm so bummed. I bought a set of real slide viewers at quite a cost just to realize they are huge. Much too large to use as a desk lamp. :(
Jason York oh no!!! I’ve never actually seen a real one in person. If they are too big you could make an awesome floor lamp? That would be really cool!
Justin Bunyard LOL! I have an awesome day job as a sales rep for a company called SnapAV. They make and supply great products for the Audio Video industry. I’ve been in the Custom Audio Video industry for over 20 years.
Yes, 100%. I am working to get them up on our website as we speak. We will have all kinds of stuff. Laser files, Xcarve, and 3D print files. I'll get that up soon and make an announcement for you all.
How about building it without something most of us can’t afford? Plus you did all that design work on the slider viewers and didn’t use them for emitting the light?!
Hi James, thanks for the feedback. We totally realize that on some of these builds the "fancy" tools absolutely alienates some of you that want to see projects without them. We have had many discussions about making sure throughout the month that we do projects with basics like the iphone datapad case. On the other hand we do want to make sure we have variety and at the end of the day hopefully plant an idea that any of you could go for. The slide viewer light . . . honestly I really gave that a lot of thought, and I might have missed the mark. I thought the viewer might be a little to in your face? I don't know, for whatever reason it just got lost this time. Again, really appreciate the feedback.
The Smugglers Room I don’t like to be negative about a video as I appreciate it takes a lot of effort to produce them and put yourself out there so I thank you for that. But yeah I guess as a concept it missed the mark by not emitting light from those lenses, instead it was some white panel which thematically didn’t really work? And using machines etc that I don’t have isn’t necessarily a problem, I suppose it really depends who these videos are aimed at? Eg someone with all of these laser cutters and such would likely take the time to do a bit of a better job, where as someone like me who uses a dremel, it’s all simply out of reach? Hope this helps and I still enjoy the channel!
@@nmills87 Thank you Nathan, I take absolutely no offense, this kind of criticism is really helpful. Honestly, I am with you. I like the look of the project overall, but I do believe we missed an opportunity to have a cleaner look, as well as an obvious design choice that should have been made. I almost did it, backed up and changed the plan (could not for the life of me tell you why either) The laser, 3D printer, etc . . . yeah, it's really a tough call. We want to use those items to build some really cool projects, but we also realize that it maybe discourages others at times. The single most important thing on our mind with every project is to hopefully help all of you by igniting some idea for one of your own projects. That all being said, we do have plans to make sure we create balance, and have a mix of projects, we'll certainly have both in the near future. Thank you for the feedback, we really do appreciate it.
I had a stroke 2 years ago 1/28/18 . I've been working on a spaceship that's made from medicine bottles, empty super glue tubes and scrap plactic from models. I don't know how to download my pictures to utube so you can look at them. I just about done and then I will paint it
Sorry to hear about the stroke, I hope you are doing well. Your project sounds great! If you are on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter you can load photos there and tag us?
NintendoCrab 101 no not at all, LOL, If I we’re a doctor and loved Greeblies it would be a perfect project. But if I did it for you I’m not sure your arm would ever heal 🤣🤣. Get well soon buddy!
Sorry Alex, we try to mix things up as much as possible. We look at it as various ways to make something from nothing. There seems to always be a tool of some kind involved; wether that be a hand saw or something more like a table saw. That being said, we are working on projects that will include more common tools and not only the high end items. Overall, we just want to offer a lot of variety and hopefully inspire. Really appreciate the feedback, hope we don't lose you.
