Viewing the theatrical release of Star Wars on Laserdisc. This is being played on a DVL 919 and outputting through the Kramer VP-773A. The Kramer is set to 480p and run through an Onkyo TX-NR626 for upscaling to 1080p.
In my opinion, this does a better job than the Extron. The deinterlacing is much better, and the noise reduction options on the Kramer are significantly better than anything the Onkyo or my TV could do. I've also noticed that the Extron seems to do something odd to the colour, it's more muted than on the Kramer.
Kramer settings:
PROCESS -
Deinterlacing - Method - Motion Adaptive
Deinterlacing - Sync - Current Field
Film Mode -Follow Input
Diagonal Correction - 003
MD Sensitivity - Level 3
Picture -Dither - Mode 1
ENHANCE -
Noise Reduction - Temporal NR - 001
SCALE -
Aspect Ratio - Best Fit
Overscan - Off
Output - Video Resolution - 480P

I still dont understand what was so "not good enough" for Lucas to add all the changes later. I own a really rare copy of Star Wars that was sent do Czechoslovakia for consideration by back-then communist censors and it is very close to the despecialised version, absolutely without the later 90s CGI. Still amazing.

A movie is a piece of art. Once it's released it should never be re-edited or changed ever

I read the description and understood about 1/4 of it...... What makes this clip so special? In layman' terms? It just looks like the version I have on VHS from 1997..

It's the theatrical cut of Star Wars before George Lucas added CGI and other changes in the special editions. I think the VHS you have from 1997 may be the special edition one. The last time the theatrical cut of Star Wars was released it was on Laserdisc (There is a transfer to DVD too, but it uses the same copy as the laserdisc). Laserdisc has a higher resolution than VHS so should look better, you'd probably be able to see it quite easily if you had them side by side. They also released films on laserdisc in widescreen more often. You can see the difference in quality in this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JRmIjT5wr0Q.html

@@minecraftcart328 Thanks for the explanation. Yes, you are right - the VHS version I have is the Special Edition from 1997. I'm much happier watching the original versions of the movies which are separate "bonus" discs in a DVD box set which came out about a decade later (I'm sure you know about that of course). A friend of mine (he's 46 and I'm only 31 yrs old) has the Laserdisc and said it was the only decent "high def" copy of the original at the time it was released. I don't know anyone personally in my city who still has a Laserdisc player though. Thanks again, and thanks for the link - I'll check it out :) "March the 4th be with you" hahah, sorry, I couldn't wait until May for the actual in-joke!
