Seeing good painters acknowledge mistakes is always one of the best things because when I first got into seriously painting I was going to paint some stormtroopers following your guide for painting stormtroopers but I constantly made mistakes over and over again and got so discouraged I almost quit the hobby
I was overwhelmed by the amount of battle droids per unit with the clone Wars set, but this guide makes it look so easy to paint them all, so definitely peace of mind lol Fantastic video once again!
Yeah. I like this. I did find another guy who did the clones with Contrast paints, and I'll be trying his method when I can finally get around to painting my remaining Imperial units. I look forward to Sorastro's clone video, too. I always pick up a ton of hints from his stuff.
Sorastro you are a genius. You have solved the tidemark issue with contrast paints on flat surfaces using the contrast medium. There’s a chance now I might actually finish painting models. As always your videos are very informative and brilliantly produced. I think this will be a great way to introduce my daughter into the hobby, yet still produce amazing results.
Thanks so much Mark! I really appreciate that. I think the Contrast paints for figures like this would be a great way to get your daughter into painting :)
This is the first time I've seen contrast paint being used effectively. Up until now I've not been convinced by them, but this is an excellent use to get so many miniatures finished.
Thanks a lot Joe! I really appreciate that. I think - like most paints - they really shine in certain situations, and when used with a little nuance :)
Oh man I didn't realize FF was going multi-part posable with The Clone Wars, I was expecting bagged hard plastic models again. This is going to be so amazing, can't wait for you to do the clones, Kenobi and Greivous.
Would painting clones video be necessary? Between the stormtroopers' white armour and the Battle Droids' colour insignia he has pretty much already shown us how to paint the clones. Maybe if wants to show off the contrast paints he can do Obi-Wan's armour differently or maybe do them last.
@@Mailed-Knight Hey mate! I think I might do a video for the Barc Speeder, which would encompass my approach to painting the Clones (and yes - I'll be exploring a possible "Contrast" solution.. ) :)
My local tabletop's been working on getting Legion established here, and as I'm probably likely to figure on getting some CIS for an army, this is def useful -b
Thank you for this series and especially this video. I was feeling overwhelmed with the amount of Droids needed for the army, your instructions made it easy. Couple more nights of painting and my droids will all be table ready. Then I can take my time and go back to try my hand at the battle damage. Really appreciate you.
Amazing work as always! As a big SW fan, I can really appreciate this, but your care, dedication and editing work could even make painting kitchen tiles fascinating!! ;) Keep up the great work!
As always, very through and thoughtful video. I love your presentation style, it's great for helping encourage people new to the hobby. Your approach to painting and modelling is my favorite among RU-vid videos I've watched. The zenithal to plain white prime comparison is a particularly useful and kind gesture, and is appreciated.
Awesome, love the use of contrast paints here. You may have convinced me to buy some. i wont use them solely, but definitely see usefulness in quick armies being painted.
I want to play legion because I’m a massive Star Wars and tabletop game fan however I have always been hesitant because I am not the best painter. I still haven’t gotten into it but have always wanted to get into miniatures and I’m close. For now I’m sticking to Armada and I might practice painting squadrons
Can’t wait till the next Star Wars video! I know you have multiple games your painting for. Star Wars, LOTR, crisis protocol etc. thanks for all you do!
I got the clone core set as my first wargame, and this tutorial was just perfect, i'd be lost and messing up a Lot without it when assembling, also the painting is the best i've seen and not just about star wars, thanks a lot Sorastro!
Nice! Very interesting to see that comparison of zenithal vs white undercoat for the contrast paints. Both results look good, but they really are quite distinct.
Hey Sorastro, superb painting as always! Though, I was curious how you would paint the dull reddish brown of the Geonosis Battle Droids? That’s gonna be my scheme! Thanks for reading!
Fantasy Flight are the same guys who put out X-Wing and Armada right? Im just glad there's a chance to kitbash with the fact you put them together yourself.
Great vid. Brilliant for quickly batching battle droids! The only thing I changed was doing the blaster first. As I'm a new painter I commonly make mistakes and found it easier to clean up with the white before staining the armour 😀
Masterful work as always! I primed with spray cans black and then white for the zenithal...this left a lot of really dark areas where I can hardly tell that the contrast paint is even there...any recommendations? I mixed the 2 contrast paint just as you have but mine seem to dry and/or thicken up really quickly...is that just me?
Great video as always buddy. Love how you are using the contrast paints too. I have been on the fence with the contrast paints but seem to work well with these droids.
Awesome guide :D I mixed it up a little by assembling one of my crouched droids with the missile launcher, felt the most appropriate pose for it, given how spindly they are xD
Love your videos, Its' amazing how simple your techniques are yet make the models look great! Great inspiration and has made me want to go back to painting my minis!
As always they look great. Thanks for the tip for tidying up the flat surfaces with medium. I am also curious how come the contrast paints actually made the droids look metallic, even though you didn't use any metallic paint.
Thanks a lot! I think the zenithal highlights help with that to an extent by simply boosting the contrast, plus the metallic chips/edge highlights.. :)
I have seen this video so many times but now I found out that you're not saying "Some poor droid" you're saying "sample droid". LOL :D Btw. thanks a million for these great tutorials.
Best music so far, check. Multiple color schemes for army variety, check. Do something awesome and make it look easy, check. Use contrast so effectively it changed how I use it, check. Know that Sorastro lays it down, Roger, Roger! Thank you so much great video.
Heres a little yapping: Red droids are normally Security droids, However in the video game Battlefront (Classic I - II) They are demolishion/Specialist The snipers are in a brown camo and Are called Asassin droids.
A big thank to you for all your videos. We thank you for teaching us your art. You have gold in your fingers, sincerely. Would it be possible to show us how to paint rebels with a desert camouflage You are a great Master with a big M. Congratulations.
That and droids in Star Wars aren’t super advanced. Droids are specialists that are only really designed to do relatively basic tasks really well, so while we see war droids and probe droids, we never see them employ sci-fi types of advanced programming or ultra sensory packages, most droids are basically mass produced slaves designed to function basically as creatures for one purpose. E.g. B1’s are basically stripped down protocol droids, and their only known language is war. XD
How to make the second most hated new characters look good! Do you think they will realise a Jar Jar Binks commander booster pack? Lol Roger, Roger. Really impressed with your use of the contrast paints. I’ve had nothing but fails with them. What paints would you use if you weren’t using contrast paints! Brilliant paint job sir. Wonderful channel.
We're thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis close from getting that lovely Obi Wan mini painted by you So close I can almost hear him Hello there
I have followed these steps to the end, and my droids look... ok. This is one of my first painting projects ever, and I made a huge mistake. I under-estimated how much white to apply for my final zenithal highlights, and the legs of my droids are sooooo dark. I am not experienced enough to talk, but I would recommend anyone trying this to make sure you white primer goes all the way up and down the droid (from above) so that there is barely any dark primer showing. I think I would also recommend a 1-3 ratio of Aggaros Dunes to Skeleton Horde instead of 50-50. I would also recommend using superglue to attach the mini to the base instead of plastic glue. Lastly, don't be a complete D.A. like me and glue the torsos on backward (went through 13 minis before I realized it). There is a button that juts out on their chest; you won't be able to glue the backpack on flush if you are putting it on the stomach. I thought this was a bad model design and shaved it off. On second thought, maybe not take my advice.
Hey Bobby! Thanks for sharing your experience with the B1s! It's all about doing, learning, and sharing, and I'm sure some viewers will find your comment helpful :)
Dear Sorastro, I have eagerly been awaiting this tutorial, and you have answered many of my questions on 'how to!' Excellent tutorial and totally inspirational. Kind Regards Johnny
