In this video we are deconstructing composer Ludwig Göransson's imaginative theme for the Star Wars live-action series, The Mandalorian. We take an in depth music theory analysis from a professional musician and sound designer standpoint, looking at orchestration, melody, rhythm and harmony of the star wars universe. The versatility in the Mandalorian's main theme song is insane. From Goranssons use of a bass recorder for the main melody, to some of the harmonic choices, like his use of the Neapolitan Chord in the strings as they run up 8th note triplets into a powerful, classic star wars brass section, this theme has a way of foreshadowing the story of Mando's journey in star wars universe. We even get a little microtonal, when the recorder is overblown and hits a half flat note in the upper register! We talk ostinatos, distortion, and even tackle the question of why flute and wind instruments sound ancient. The anthropological answer to why certain things sound old might surprise you and frame the shows score in a new light.
