I don't usually comment on videos, but I just had to praise you for how well done this video was. You really did this justice. Did not want this video to end.
Star Wars shows us the power of story telling and how it can inspire us to do more than just use coding on a computer but that's why I watch Star Wars because it's just magical in a way we never saw story telling before it's truly wonderful
@Carter_Jpeg I concur with you on this. Sometimes practical effects, wouldn't be practical for things like: Huge scenes with hundreds of objects. (Like that scene with all of the first order troopers.) Things like that. But practical effects can be practical. Like why would you make actors/actresses CG when you can just use actual people. That prestige balance is needed to make a visually pleasing film.
The music at the end .... Just ... I mean you can’t listen to it without getting emotional I cried because it repenser me of this amazing ending of Star Wars VI... with the Ewoks celebration I mean .. this is Star Wars y’all
Now YOUR words made me cry... I am 56 and I am not ashamed.) Star Wars is a huge part of my life, a true masterpiece in this cheap silicon world. I am glad we were born at the right time. Thank you for your words!
i would feel like a kid in a candy store if i were to go here, im only 15 but i really love starwars. The prequels were my personal favorites, and R2-D2 has been my favorite droid. And Daeth Vader is one of my favorite movie villains.
This video is amazing. You truly see the effort and amount of love the designers put into these pieces. Star Wars is more than just an experience to some people, it's life!
This is definitely on my bucket list to visit this.I have two goals for when I'm in there 1.to see the Yoda puppet and 2 to see the darthvader costume.I would melt away like the wicked witch if I stepped foot in this place by emotion Ha ha ha.Only thing better would be to meet Harrison ford or Mark Hami in there
Ya kno, I have an appreciation for practical effects as much as the next guy. But movies still use practical effects. It never went anywhere. Now it's just morphed with cgi. And in all honesty. There's just stuff you can't film practically. A slecific scene that comes to mind is that huge battle from Lord if the rings. Today movie effects are better than ever. And there A nothing wrong with that. cgi is a genuine art form that takes skill and craft to make it work
I agree, I loved the old school way of moving making, it took our imagination to different places. Unfortunately Hollywood has become far too greedy to bring back the old method.
Well they started using a form of rear projection for mandalorian. So as long as they can find new ways to use old stuff then I think they will go back to the old stuff.Plus Babu frik was a puppet so.
Growing up as geek and a nerd, these movies got me through tough times in school when i use to get bullied. These flims will always have a safe place in my ♥
Ohhhhh Sir YOU Said a MOUTH FULL! I TOO Grew up as a Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Comic Book Geek/Nerd. AND on TOP Of that I was and still AM a Musician too! Funny thing though... What USED to get me Bullied and Beat up when I was a kid... is NOW Considered "UBER-COOL" BECAUSE of TV shows like "Big Bang Theory" and Star Wars. ALOT More people have been exposed to it and It's crossed into other things. Even some of the big "JOCK" types NOW think that stuff is Cool! But yea... for Me too... this kind of stuff will ALWAYS Have a special place in my heart! And has INSPIRED Me to the point of DOING Costuming/Historical Clothing/Leather Working/Prop Making as a side business that I STILL Hope to eventually make into a FULL TIME Business! It's really awesome to MAKE something that is SPOT ON In detail and to have others come up to you and say, "WOW! THAT Looks JUST LIKE From the movies!" I've also gotten this when I worked at Ren Faires wearing my 16th Century Irish Clothing. And have History Professors come up and say, "WOW! THAT looks JUST Like the Painting!" So... I will keep on doing what I LOVE for as long as I can! :)
Movie studios used to use an inferior kind of rubber that has, since the 1980s, become very brittle. If you were to puppeteer the original Yodas that remain intact, he would crumble to pieces.
and this is why Star Wars, as the part of world collective culture is had become, should have become public domain. the true fans would have taken care of star wars for decades like they already did unlike disney who just ruined it in 3 movies.
You do realize J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson are big Star Wars fans right? Just because they directed movies you don’t like doesn’t make them any less true fans, they simply have ideas different from yours.
@@commonwriternext just said that cause i couldn't care less tbh, when you say ruin johnson is a star wars fan, anything else you can say is automaticaly made irrelevant if not downright laughtable.
I echo your sentiments about film sincerely....CGI has become a crutch for so many asinine studios and poor filmmakers and it appeals to the lowest brow of our society. I prefer substance over flash, not to mention you can still have the flash with the substance done right. The ironic part to me is that if people were still perfecting stop motion with the cameras and electronics of today, it would be even MORE incredible. Realism and tangibility are paramount. I was very, very disappointed when I saw all the flying ships were CGI'd in the final battle of TFA. At least we saw a return to the practical sets...
CGI is not more realistic. You KNOW it's not real, it doesn't look real. It has no substance. Look up how much worse CGI is now compared to how it started out. They are cheaping out on the CGI now. And if they were still making films with models and puppets it would be amazing by now. Films have changed. It's all about how many CGI explosions they can get into a 105 minutes.
David, you got me very emotional. As an original 1977 fan this is my heaven on earth. Maybe one day.... one day....i'll get to see this in person. This is the only thing on my bucket list....and is far, far away. At least I got to see it through your eyes. Thank you.
Nice video, David. It popped up in my recommendations just now, and I was like, "Hey, I know that name!" We got to see several of these costumes and props in various locations. The first time was at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC, in October of 1998. I saw a few pieces again, along with the occasional prequel additions, at Star Wars Celebration conventions in Indianapolis (2002 and 2005, maybe?) and then we got to see this same exhibit, Where Science Meets Imagination, very close to home when it came to the Space and Rocket Museum in Huntsville AL sometime after that, either 2007 or 2010? I know it was shortly after one of our trips to Disney World, which is why I peg it as one of those two years. But more likely 2010 since that was also when they moved Celebration to Orlando and had the 'Last Tour to Endor' special event at Disney's Hollywood Studios, right before they retired the original version of Star Tours. Very cool to see some of these displays again, your camera is thankfully much better than the one I had back then.
DAVID MATTOX dude have you seen Interstellar for christ sake that movie didnt even use a green screen! tons of ppl still make practical movie effects dude
Thanks for the virtual tour - it is priceless since i can not go there myself... The movie itself, the "Star Wars" saga, especially, original episodes 4,5,6, is immortal. Thanks!
I've always liked making models from scratch and ive always found it a shame that it's getting hard to show off the model skills in movies and stuff these days. computer generated things is stopping people to show there creative talents and what they can design and build physically. Plus I think physical models look more realistic for movies. Don't get me wrong computer generated is creative but physical models have that special touch which is extra special in a lot of ways.
I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who likes costumes and models better. I really do hate CGI. Not once have I ever seen CGI that looks even remotely good.
I agree with you. The only thing I disliked about the prequels was the CGI. The original trilogy had a really unique feel to it that was totally lost when they replaced the practical effects.
What about the shitty lightsaber duels that involve attacking a already pre-existing lightsaber block, that's been there for about 10 seconds? or the corny dialogue that hayden spoke out? Episode 3: jedi council ( This is madness.) Not even a ! he showed no emotion in that shot.
This reminds me of when I went to The Making of Harry Potter were they had all the original set pieces and costumes, its so strange to think that where all that stuff actually happend.
personally i found the puppet yoda and jabba etc a lot more convincing than the computer 'upgrades' they did later on, the cgi in the movies in its current form is completely unconvincing whereas when i was a kid in the 90's i believed yoda was real because there was a physical thing there - even in the phantom menace. they need to re-do the cgi stuff in a few years when it is convincing enough to believe, but there was nothing wrong with the original puppets- they were physical n had a presence of their own
