I for the life of me can't figure out how to make hdr look good on my series x and TV. Always looks washed out and dark. I like things to look bright and vivid and colorful. What am I doing wrong?
The problem is the same people are you trying to convince that HDR is better than SDR are watching this on their panels with terrible HDR so they won't be able to notice the difference anyway. It really is one of those things you have to experience with your own eyes to truly understand.
Thank you for making this comparison. From what I can see in the video, for this specific game at this specific 1.0 release version, I personally like SDR better as it's more balanced overall. The HDR has some light sources looking really bright, but then the other parts of the image are noticeably washed out. Thanks again for making these videos. It really helps to see which games are worth playing in HDR
The people complaining about HDR have obviously never seen true HDR it really is a game changer in games and movies get an oled then tell me HDR is bad lol.
@@TheJms1977 no mate the only benefit hdr offers is just a way brighter image which is also at higher risk of burn in another reason i dont use it, a perfectly calibrated sdr image is way better than hdr in my opinion better colors bettter black levels just better overall
@@leighwilliams3163 Gonna have to disgaree a properly calibrated HDR image blows sdr away, i even use RTX hdr on older sdr or games which dont support HDR the image is much better also you dont need to baby your panel by using lower brightness etc as mixed use has a very low chance of burn in if at all just enjoy your screen.
@@leighwilliams3163 Turn on the Final Fantasy 16 Demo, properly calibrate your oled monitor or tv and then tell me this doesn't look a million times better. The specular Highlights with flames or magic particles are INSANE.
I would actually say there is more shadow detail in HDR. The SDR might look like it has a better black floor but to me it looks like it’s crushing some detail. Yes I’m watching on a HDR display
Hey man! I really appreciate your videos and have used your settings on my lg CX for over a year now with great results. I was wondering if your recommendation for keeping FTDA at -4 on gta5 ps5 still stands? I first became aware of this setting in your diablo 4 videos and kept it -whatever you said then, but since an updated video you said the game got fixed, so i turned it back to 0. I want the best possible picture over all in all my content, including movies/tv shows while changing as little as possible, so putting it shortly: -4 or 0? I wont keep switching in every game going forwards, so i guess this is just a general setting question. It makes a very small difference, but i figured i might as well ask. Thanks for the work you do, and I am very fortunate you have my tv specifically so i know exactly what to change!
Would be interesting to know, why it is even in 2024 such a big problem for developers to deliver a perfect black level floor together with a good peak brightness.. Nearly ever release makes me and my Oled really sad. Frustrating.
People might have external programs disrupting game HDR, it happened to me in ER when something popped up the screen became extremely washed out and much, much worse than SDR. If you're running HDR through in-game settings and not something like Nvidia RTX HDR always make sure to close any apps that might interfere with the game by adding an overlay or something of that nature.
What Tone Mapping do you use for your videos? HGIG oder DTM? I use HGIG and its too dark in combination with Brightness -5 or -3. (C1, PS5). Brightness 0 or +2 looks better and the middle object on the calibration screen is with these settings a little bit visible.
Nice this HDR vs SDR side by side comparison are great . Also think like a reshade preset like Fake Hdr could help huge here if the black level are raised to much with the vanilla version in HDR.
Are you using HGIG or DTM On for this game? Also what about a TV like the Samsung S95C where the SDR Game Mode brightness is insane? Do you still recommend HDR over SDR for a TV like that?
4:38 in HDR you can’t see the shadows on the right area while walking and the ground looks less realistic. Most of the time HDR looks much brighter but less detailed
The main reason some people believe that SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) is better than HDR (High Dynamic Range) at night and in indoor scenes is due to how HDR renders darkness. In HDR mode, the night can look washed out and gray, lacking true blacks. Some might argue that, similar to many Dolby Vision films, this incomplete black is an artistic choice and intentional. However, this doesn’t mean it appeals to everyone, especially for those with OLED screens, where this issue can be more noticeable. While HDR does have obvious advantages, particularly in daytime scenes like sunlight, sunrises, and sunsets, which look stunning if you have a display capable of maintaining high brightness without aggressive ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiting), it’s difficult to definitively say that HDR is better in a game like RDR2, which was developed over many years with SDR in mind. Personally, I have three OLED TVs - the LG CX, E6, and the SONY QD-OLED A95K - and especially on the A95K HDR looks amazing, with the panel's clarity being unprecedented compared to WRGB OLEDs. It’s hard for me to say that HDR is definitely better in a game like RDR2. I think HDR shows its strengths here, but SDR is more aligned with the original artistic vision of the game.
I have the opposite issue, HDR gives me true darkness which can be counterproductive while playing videogames even if it's more accurate to real life. To each their own I guess, though I still believe HDR is always superior if implemented properly.
Marcus the opening comments about other people. That’s 100 percent correct. Most people don’t have a clue😂 I laughed when the music kicked in after….. hdr is the clear winner. 😂 it’s just like shut up kids you don’t know what your on about 😂
I have a great HDR panel, OLED with 900+ nits, but gaming HDR is really all over the place. Sometimes it looks amazing and better, sometimes it's roughly even, and sometimes it's worse. The raised blacks here makes me want to use SDR honestly.
Quick question. When setting up HDR on PS5, the first screen is 2000 but the second sun is 1800. For those games that let me choose the brightness in game, which one should I use?
I would no change the brightness because you change the whole picture instead of just the very bottom. The shadow detail setting is the best you can do
HDR is only amazing if your tv has 800 nits, a wide color gamut covering both 90% of dci-p3 and bt2020 color space, and an excellent contrast ratio, which oleds are known for.
I don’t know why but for me there isn’t an option for the 40FPS mode or even a switch to turn off Film grain or Chromatic aberration. This options should have been at least appeared but I couldn’t find it. I also have a capable monitor like I play many other games on 120hz mode. Bought the game on a New Zealand account to play it earlier in Germany maybe that’s the problem? I can hardly imagine the New Zealand edition have less graphic settings than others… Playing on Ps5
Ps5 was running an older version and a patch went live a day ago. You're gonna run into problems if you don't start a new save file though so I hope you're not far in the game.
FYI you can change the 1000 nit restriction of the nvidia rtx ap as well as the hdr range on hdr10+ games by changing your EDID TV metadata. Samsung's can only do this via the service menu whereas LGs can still do it with the Custom Resolution Utility I believe (Samsung and other monitors now lock this data tweaking in CRU..)
It may not be perfect but to me it's incredible compared to sdr. Its def more impactful. I like how tasteful the hdr is. I hate games that brighten everything. This imo is 10x better then most games that brighten everything. I want rhe image to stay lower with the average picture level and pop on highlights and brighter areas. Ive seen way way more games that are so so much worse.
@@Solus793 very true which is how most games are and somehow people like it. This game is much much much much better then like the last 5 games I've bought. Sometimes the impact of the brightness is nice for sure but I prefer this more subtle real approach of purely brightening specific areas that should have more pop then others. Aka highlights. I hate hdr that raises the black floor and or lowers gamma to give off a more perceived brighter effect.
Anyone claims they can’t see the difference between HDR/SDR they’re blind as a bat. Given that decent HDR is standard on TV’s costing less than $500 nowadays there really is no excuse.
I can see a clear difference here, hdr has a lot more detail, contrast and color information, especiallly in scenes with larger variances between dark and bright. I have a question, and I don't think anyone is talking about it but the 'color temperature control' setting in AMD's gpu software is on by default and completely ruins colors from what i can tell (even with custom color disabled, need to toggle 'custom color' to enabled then disable 'color temperature control'). Turning this off appears to fix washed out hdr and looks way more realistic. And even in SDR mode, it fixes colors in a completely opposite way, colors looked really oversaturated to me when windows is in sdr mode until i disabled this setting. Someone here know about this? Has anyone tested this setting?
SDR has better contrast, what use is HDR if there isn't true blacks? HDR is about contrast between light and dark. which is also why having a bias light behind your TV is dumb too lol
I have an OLED panel and I prefer SDR. HDR is great for showing off some videos, but I find the ultra bright highlights distracting in HDR, and SDR feels “easier” to my eyes and more natural.
Ive always said it hdr is a gimmick it may be brighter but thats all and sdr looks so much better even punchier colours an black levels, i never use hdr for anything calibrated sdr is tge way forward for movies an gaming
Actually buy an HDR capable display before making uninformed statements like this. HDR is only inferior if the devs completely give up on it, otherwise it makes the screen quite literally come to life. I've tried it once and can't go back now, it's so much more bright, saturated and contrasty than SDR.
@@anitaremenarova6662 ive got a samsung s95c one of best tvs you can buy and is very capable of HDR, HDR is a money marketing gimmick an always will be plus theres more chance of screen burn using it because of the high brightness so you go ahead an keep using it an in time you will get screen burn, ive calibrated my sdr picture to look just as good if not better than HDR without worry of screen burn 😂
