Star Wars Retro Collection Return of the Jedi figure reviews - Toy Polloi 

Just wanted to say that I picked up the Han Solo from this wave while at Target today. The legs aren't bent at all and he can stand perfectly fine...so that could a production issue on some batches. He still can't hold the blaster at all but it's nice to finally own a copy of this figure, even if it's not perfect.

Hi Dave, I just checked out this video again. Great review on the retro range. Just bought figures from Toys for a pound. Picked up an Anakin skywalker from the Attack of the Clones series and was taken back by the back of the card. They have the other figures pictured on the back. Hopefully, they may start doing this to new retro ranges . This is probably something you're aware of. But just in case you weren't. Many thanks for the video on toys for a pound. One of my go places to look for new collectables. All the best. Please keep your videos coming, so inspiring.

Kenner should come back as a stand alone company and do all these re releases with quality

I'm really considering grabbing one or some of the figures from this line as my introduction to Kenner collecting, for how easily obtainable they are and how close they are to the originals. I understand the earliest Retro releases have some of the biggest problems, but with my limited budget idk if I'll ever find a good copy of Luke or Vader... going back and forth on it. Regardless, I appreciate the thorough and honest look at these, it's super helpful!

I just received the Retro Indiana Jones figure and it seems very accurate to the original outside of the choking hazard warning. No Retro sticker or faux aging. Too bad they didn’t take that approach with these, although I still like them.

Thanks Dave great video I got the wave back in july took out those ugly red stickers on my cars. Even if I have the original figures I picked them up just for the fun of it got the emperor and Lando in clearance just to take them out of packaging so I can use them as extras on my shelves. In all they are ok but they don’t feel like the original figs

I agree Dave ..the ‘fan made’ ones are superior quality to these ..but they cost big dollars,more than a lot of original vintage ones ..a bit of patience and people would find the original Kenners at a decent price

All my fave SW costumes come from RotJ - Boushh, Biker Scout, Skiff Lando & Royal Guard so I'm very happy (especially if they do Royal Guard & Weequay) 😊

I'm glad I finished recollecting the vintage line and re carding them last year. I was thinking at the time to wait another year for this wave but I'm glad I didn't. Thanks to alot of your repair videos I made Jedi Luke's cape and prune face. It was hard to get material similar to the originals but it was close. Couldn't find material for trench coat han solo. I ended up getting an original coat. Had to buy lots of figures and accessories to get for some figures so I ended up with extras. Originally I was going to use the retro collection figures but was disappointed with the molds and paint application. Like you said they feel and look cheap. I only used 3 of the retro line for the record kits only because originals were very expensive or unavailable. Those figures were lando boba Fett and Yoda from empire retro collection. I will buy these figures because I have a endor Lea I swapped the accessories from Hasbro vintage collection and a endor Han solo will be good to complement. I also have an extra Lea boush with no accessories so I will swapped the retro collection to the original. Since I have extra repro weapon's I will put the blue repro saber on retro Luke like you have. I didn't want to put that in the re card Jedi Luke because the re card card back is very close to my original Kenner card back from 1984 comparing the two together.

I must admit to purchasing the first two waves and left them carded . Having the originals I will most certainly sell the retro figured on I think for those that had figures back in the day and sold or gave away these are ideal to dip into nostalgia as you say but if your lucky enough to own the vintage figures I don't see much point to them unless you want weapons and accessories from them. Great video as always

Another great review! And the shortcomings you've highlghted are exactly the reason why i no longer buy this line at the full price! The price on these figures has jumped from £10 to £14 and there hasn't been a similar jump in quality, in fact in some areas its worse than the previous waves! Again Hasbro doesn't listen to collectors who have been wanting them to provide thicker cardbacks, and get rid of the retro sticker and faux weathering since the launch of this line. I'll only pick these up if the go on sale for less than £10 each!

It really is a shame. I get what Hasbro is trying to do but why bother if they aren’t going to hold them to the same standards. The reality is that the originals are already a copy as they were made from molds of the actual original sculpts. Therefore, these are copies of copies which can never be as good as the original, but they add insult to injury by making them cheap copies on top of everything else. Thank you for the excellent review Dave!

At this point the only figure I really bought for the figure was the scout trooper. I bought Jedi Luke and Endor Han, but I only bought Luke for the accessories, and Han is basically a placeholder until i get the vintage figure (and then he will also just be used for accessories.)

Great video! I am still waiting for my Boushh… all the others were delivered by Amazon last week, but somehow the sixth figure seems to be delayed

I hope they continue this line, even continue with new figures.

I am glad these are being made. First 2 waves I bought them all. This time I only got 2 Jedi Luke’s. And it’s nice to not have to repaint his face. Might get Han and a Biker scout. Not sure.

I don't know why Hasbro still giving us the horrible "creased" look cardback. And card stock is rather flimsy as well.. It takes away of the look overall... That is not necessary. Still great review Dave! 👍

Good review Dave. I got all of the Empire retro figures, including the two pack bounty hunter packs, because for me as a kid those were ‘peak’ Star Wars figures in the day. Like you, I cannot abide the orgy of legal garbage on the paper insert AND the card. All of these figures have lost a lot of definition- I always thought that was a heavy paint application but I think you’re right that the digital scan results in a soft sculpt. I agree this is a bit of an odd line up- why didn’t they do an Admiral Ackbar at or Gamo Guard.

The Emperor's sleeve and wrist have the 3D print support still attached. Shoddy QC from Hasbro.

Had the exact same issues with my Lea and Han. My Han is so bad his legs are bent together at the feet. This seems to be a bigger issue than I originally thought.

I'd be willing to pay a little extra if they'd match or exceed the quality of the original. Though reissues years later tend to always be poorer quality. And the quality seems to drop every time they do a new run of reissues. I only buy Takara Transformers G1 reissues, as the quality is generally better than Hasbro.

I'm not keen on the glossy sheen the new figures have. I know thebold ones have been well played with but I don't remember them ever being so shiny in thebold days. It takes away some of the realism when you have an Emperor with a shiny cloak.

Thanks for the comparison. I always find it interesting to see the differences between modern versions and classic figures. Hasbro has very poor quality control on most of their toy lines, which is sad. I do like Marvel Legends and GI Joe Classified figures, but I've notice a slip in QC in the last year or so. Always cutting corners where ever possible, yet they're toy prices continue to rise. That doesn't make collectors feel great about the product being released already, but then, on top of that, the product has flaws, defects, and/or breaks... Well, that's pretty upsetting. If you're a big company that can't produce quality, then perhaps that means that you're producing too much quantity, and you need to work on the quality end a bit. Otherwise, your reputation is bound to take a beating.

True confessions... I never liked the Endor Han figure - not even as a kid. Same with Hoth Han (and I never knew the bit on his leg was to hold the blaster). Bespin and New Hope Han I loved. I wasn't super-keen on a lot of stuff from the initial Jedi line, but Boushh Leia and Lando Skiff I did like - mainly because I had a thing for removable helmets. Lando Skiff was the last figure I ever bought new off the pegs right at the end of the 80's - '88-'89. I believe the figures he was pegwarming with were Ree Yees, Bib Fortuna, Squid Head - maybe someone else (definitely Ree Yees was there). I'm more looking forward to the Star Wars Retro boxed set #2 with R2 and 3PO...

I would very much get one of the Black Series figures instead, although they are more expensive (sometimes too expensive), but these could probably be used for a nice repaint, using miniature painting techniques, with wet and dry brushing.

I will pass on these, I will keep collecting the vintage collection figures.

Thanks Dave. Won't bother to pick these up as happy with the originals. If the cardbacks were better quality I'd be tempted. I have however been collecting the Mando, Boba, Kenobi figures. Just because they are new characters I suppose. Be nice if they did more never released figures from original trilogy but doubt Hasbro will invest the money.

Packaging ruins them...... Thin card stock , horrible weathered effects , Retro sticker , boring back of cards....... Great video.

Weird how they yellow tinted some of the movie photos.

It occurred to me when you said that the logo looked duller on the new one, that maybe that's supposed to be part of the faux aging of the cards? To look old and faded. I also think that the lack of any cross sell on the back of the new cards is just proof that you're not really suppose to look at them. You're either opening and tossing them or hanging them on a wall where you won't see the card back, so they don't bother with the cross sell.

I have all the waves and displaying them loose, they are ok, having Luke Jedi is good as he has gotten pricey for an original but the rest pretty poor choices. A Lando Skiff is pretty much the same price as a new one, his head is also smaller, his helmet is loose. Some of the figures holes in the feet are too small as well for the vintage stands to fit. Overall not bad, I hope they bring out some of the last 17 and I do not mean Annakin lol. The next wave of six look good in the pictures, I hope they stand up to scrutiny

The upside to the lesser quality figures is that they won’t easily be mistaken for originals. I also don’t understand why they need so much legalese inside AND on the outside of the package. Finally, I wonder whether representation is the reason for including the same characters in almost every line. Maybe in a couple of years we’ll get General Lando, Carbonite Han, and Poncho Luke!

I have that luke skywalker figure. I find the lightsaber is held better if it's turned so the flat handle runs left to right.

They could have kept the packaging like the originals but had new photos to differentiate them

Think for the money would raver go for the vintage ones there just some think about the feel of a old toy that don’t get with a new one plus bet some wear get the vintage one for same price as the new one really good video keep them coming

Most of the figures get a pass from me but I was very disappointed with the face of Luke. Not sure what's going on there. Also the Lando staff seems to be almost see through when held up to the light. An improvement on wave 1 in terms of holding the weapons but not great when compared to the wave 2 collection.

I think for the price of these figures. For someone who can't necessarily afford to go out and spend the on card price for vintage original figures. If people bought these and just kept them on card. These would be great. I do wish however they kept them looking more original without the ages look and 40th anniversary logo.

Thanks for reviewing these - I passed on them as I already have the vintage ones (also a boring choice of figures that are easy to find on the secondary market). Also I noticed the softer details and much rather spend money on Stan Solo products and other boutique customisers. I have the Boba Fett Retro and one leg is shorter than the other !? If the cards were better I might have got them to keep carded - but even they don't do it for me (with all the issues you point out). Keep on polloiing!

I agree the range of these retro figures isn’t that impressive. I haven’t bought any of the original trilogy ones. I have a couple of Mandalorian ones I was given as Xmas gifts and actually find those more interesting. The leia Bousch figure to me is the most tempting but only due to the fact that even repro accessories for that figure seem sparse or the originals are the more pricey ones and I would be tempted use those to complete an original figure.

Paint applications not always that good on modern starwars figures some better than others. My original emperor back in the day was a mail away along with admiral akbar.

I don't understand why Hasbro cheap out on the card stock for these figures. The Marvel Legends retro figures use fantastic card that's super thick and high-quality.

The colour saturation on the new Retro cardbacks is OTT, looks terrible compared to the image on the vintage cards

I loved how smoothly and cleanly the vintage biker scout's pistol fit in his hand, like early ASMR in action figure form. Mine was a much better mold, I guess, than the one you have.

Agree, that the selection of characters is poor, but an Ewok in place? No thanks, I think the Ewoks are the most ubiquitous of the extant carded figures. Gam Guard would have been good as would Squid Face!

Hasbro really does struggle with their legs… Most of my Star Wars Black series stand crooked because of their feet or legs moldings. We pay a premium for our collectibles even though they turn out bad…

In this day and age of old films and TV shows being remastered in high definition, I've never really understood the distressed look that they put on things to make them look old. I have old films that look better than a lot of recent movies, and these figures clearly are brand new productions that are mint condition, so why act like all old things are in bad condition.
