Oh yeah. It took me a second to realise what you were talking about. I was thinking: "What is this guy talking about?" But that would've actually worked...
This part bugged me. Killing him would not be in cold blood. He was literally going to blow up the ship. The death of a guilty man in payment for the life of hundreds. Anakin made the right call.
It could be argued that Anakin didn’t have to kill him, he could have force pulled the detonator away or even cut off his hand. I think the main thing was that Anakin stabbed someone in the back
@@outdoorscholar6016 said someone was a terrorist and was ALSO about to turn a bunch of innocent civilians into extra chunky salsa. He got what was coming to him
@@jeremyallen492 I’m not saying he didn’t get what was coming to him, he totally deserved it. What I am saying is that it was not the Jedi way, and it was another step Anakin took to the dark side (as heard with the brief Vader theme) As I said before, it was the fact that he stabbed someone in the back.
Tal Merrik didn’t know Anakin was there - he probably could have disarmed in some way. It’s not murder, but it’s not exactly in keeping with the Light Side either.
Obi Wan: "Anakin..." Anakin: "What? he was going to blow up the ship" Obi Wan: "No, I mean... you could have just cut his hand... " Anakin: "Oh... whops"
Anakin: Well, I got to hand it to you, Master. I had the idea, but I could never quite put my finger on it, so I kept the thought at an arm's length. (Beat) Obi-wan: How long have you been-- Anakin: A few weeks
@@scp-foundation1 Anakin ran that risk pretty much no matter how he killed him. Too bad Jedi don't have the ability to snatch objects out of people's hands in a fraction of a second while their distracted though.
Mark my words, I reckon this Anakin character will grow into the shining beacon of the light side, spreading love and keeping people safe, especially the younglings. What a hero. He will always have the high ground, no question, and will open a museum to showcase his most favourite thing in the galaxy; Sand.
This is arguably a kind act by Anakin, being the monster that is needed so his friends don't have to. It still leads down the dark path though, especially with that smile.
@@SkeloDevil601 Hey, it would have been handy. You know, keeping the enemy at arms length. Using his obviously superior hand eye coordination. A demonstration of the force. Etc.
What i like about Anakin in the prequels was that he felt like he had to prove himself to the jedi that he could destroy the sith and you can tell Windu had second thoughts and felt Obi wan was holding him back even know he was just keeping him safe as i felt Anakin was a moral and a lesson that putting people to impossible standers can be dangerous and that trying to prove yourself to someone can lead to repercussions
It's a great line because you really see child Anakin from Episode I shine through here - strong conviction and beliefs, an understanding of right vs wrong. There's a beautiful heroism and clarity to it.
I mean... Anakin made the right call? Dude said he was going to kill them all anyways, to not take him out isn't pacifism, it's suicide with a side plate of victims.
This is why the show is amazing. Anakin’s choice here is 100% justified. Letting him live would have endangered everyone. Killing him was, from a military standpoint, a perfectly logical and good choice. He’s not full out evil, yet. He’s just blurring the lines.
Damn I never noticed the Vader theme here until you pointed it out. Actually I can still not quite make it out. Appears in two places. I always found this scene funny. "What? He was going to blow up the ship"
This is easily my top 5 favorite Clone Wars arcs. It shows us that Obi-Wan went through the SAME struggles as Anakin when it came to attachments. Admitting he would've left the Jedi for her. Gives a lot of depth into Obi-Wan's character and that he too struggles with following the Jedi code.
+CosmicUndeadElf I felt like there should've been a laugh track playing when Anakin said "What?" followed up with Obi-Wan saying "Oh Anakin, I can't take you anywhere." while the laugh track still plays Anakin raises his hands close to his face and shrugs with a smile. By the way the name of this show would be called "Oh Anakin" played live in front of a studio audience.
Yeah, im not sure whats really stopping them. Cut the hand, grab the detonator, etc. . . . this was a very stupid situation, made by a very lost writer i feel.
"Had you said the word, I would've left the Jedi Order." The very first time I saw this episode, I almost cried after hearing that. Just the thought that there was a point in time where Obi-Wan was so in love he would've given up everything he had to be with someone, filled me with both profound sorrow and elation.
+DarthVidar-spiller Scenes like this make the series for me, because it shows Anakin crossing into that gray area due to wartime conditions. It hints at the Vader in him. The only thing I didn't like about this scene was two Jedi not grabbing the detonator with the force.
2:13 I love how Anakin doesn't really care he killed him. It's way worse than acting all evil and getting satisfaction from killing. He just says "what?" as if he pulled a prank and twirls his lightsaber. Anakin is such a perfect character in the clone wars. Cartoon Network did a better job making a character than the prequels ever did.
Each of the prequel movies was an expanded universe unto themselves. Lucas was brilliant to think up so much, but he made the mistake of cramming it all into three 90 minute films.
Douglas Murphy well by the Jedi code you don't kill someone unarmed, and technically anakin killing him isn't wrong as he had a detonator and was going to kill everyone on the ship so really, this is the light side of anakin before the end of the clone wars where he is easily manipulated into killing innocents
It's good stuff. Kenobi's disclosure that he would have left the order on her word clarifies not only the depth of their mutual feelings, but also Kenobi's degree of self-control compared to the destructive passions of Anakin and Padme.
This is not a "cold-blooded killer" scene this is self-defense. The title should've been Anakin gets the job done. Anakin did exactly what Kenobi should've done. Kenobi and his pacifist lover weren't making any move, they stood there like an idiot. If not for Anakin she would've died
Anakin killed Merrik while his back was turned, instead of cutting off his arm according to Jedi swordsmanship doctrine, and also disrespected his adversary's death. Anakin isn't cold-blooded because he killed him, he's cold-blooded because of how casually he deflected responsibility for the dishonorable way that he acted, even if what he did was technically acceptable albeit morally dubious.
@@SnowblindOtter People like Merrik take advantage of pacifist people. Merrik literally manipulated Kenobi and Duchess not to do anything. This is kind of ironic since the mind trickster Kenobi got manipulated by a normal person. Whether it's some ridiculous law or Jedi doctrine, nothing prevents Anakin to do what must be done. Besides, it's pointless to cut off his arm. Because their advanced technology has prosthetic arms far stronger than a human arm. Also, he does not have force power to control it with his hands. So what's the point? Anakin had to sneak behind his back otherwise he would've killed Duchess, isn't obvious? And what responsibility were you talking about? He took his responsibility properly by saving Duchess and putting an end to that mass murderer. What did you expect him to do, come from the front like an idiot and tell Merrik to stop as if he'd listen... It doesn't seem he disrespected Merrik's death. This is more like Merrik's death doesn't concern him. Why should he? Merrik wasn't an honorable person. People should respect those who earned to be respected anyway. I don't find his lack of dramatic reaction disturbing
@@Jafran_Helstorm I mostly agree, except for 3 of your points: Anakin truly could've cut his arm off, I don't get what you mean when you say he can't. Of course he can, people's arms get cut off left and right in Star Wars lol. Also, he could've force pulled the detonator away. Remember, Anakin had the element of surprise on his side. Tal wouldn't have seen it coming and thus he could've lost the detonator as soon as Anakin applied a strong enough force pull. He's just a human, like you said, compared to Anakin's superhuman abilities as a Jedi. And lastly, yeah, but even then you don't smile after you kill someone. Yet Anakin did, because he's a cold-blooded killer, in a sense. After all, there's a solid reason why Vader's theme was subtly playing in the background right as Anakin murdered Tal and Obi-Wan gave him a disapproving "Anakin."
"Now who will strike first and brand themselves a cold blooded killer?" Anakin: "i was born for this moment" Me: you could have just chopped his hand, you know?
@@maximaldinotrap Besides who's to say that if Anikin was able to go for the hand or wrist, that a momentary flinch of pain in the relevant nerves of the body "wouldn't" be enough to press the button by accident thus exploding the ship.
@@keith3278 Besides who's to say that if Anikin was to stab him in the heart, that a momentary flinch of pain in the relevant nerves of the body "wouldn't" be enough to press the button by accident thus exploding the ship. cutting off his arm would've been even safer tbh
2:20 "Obi-Warn, I-" "General Skywalker, the last of the droids have been defeated sir." "Very good, Commander Cockblock." "Why are you calling me that, sir?" "No, idea, but it seems fitting in this moment, Cody..." "Agreed."
I love the smirk by anakin like he's so proud of himself for stopping him. Then not only the come back but the casual flip of the lightsaber to make his point
The thing that I love in this scene is how they jump from: "You can't kill me because of your values" to shrugging of the same guys death via DS approved Backstab. That's like "oh no ... anyways" just with a corpse on the floor
Lmao I can't stop watching his face when satine tells obi-wan she loves him. It reminds me of kens face from the bee movie when his gf is telling him about how she is helping Barry sue the human race.
@@bookworm4life836 It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side t
This story should never have been relegated to a TV show. THIS should have been a part of Attack of the Clones. Showing Obi-Wan's love for another, contrasted against Anakin's. This was the characterisation that the prequels needed. We needed to see this strife and conflict. We needed to see how one character went one way and the other chose the darker path. IN THE MOVIES.This was great stuff, don't get me wrong. But we really needed this as part of the primary story and not an aside.
+Helbore You cannot expect a piece of shallow, I'm-perfect---so-bow-to-me trash like G. Lucas to have written anything of any depth into those movies except "Sand.. I don't like it... it gets everywhere." Fuck George Lucas with the plaid shirts in his closet and a toy of Jar Jar Binks!!
@@samdickenson4982 I think in the novels it was explained that he wasn’t very attuned with the force, and he had to practice like crazy to become adequate with it. He might not have confidence in his force abilities, especially in a tight situation like that. Also you know, the show has to create tension, and if you have overpowered stuff like the force at all times, all tension is removed. It’s why Obi wan and Darth mauls battles with pre vizla were a spectacle to watch. If either of them wanted, they could just restrain him with the force, and win. Similar battles occur throughout the whole show.
He probably wasn't sure he could pry the remote out of the guy's hand before the guy set it off. Obi-Wan could have tossed him around like a rag doll but this would have required more precision. I doubt he was willing to risk it.
Thing is, what Anakin did was the most logical solution. Merrik would have blown up a shipload of people otherwise, even if he had managed to leave with the Dutchess.
Domnul L That would have been a risk as the trigger was still in his hand.Killing merrik was the only right choice. In real life imagine you are in a hostage situation or facing a suicide bomber(like merrik here) as a police officer you have the choice to neutralise the threat permanently if you get the chance or just try to injure him to immobilise him.Majority of people would choose to kill the threat as it is an easier and much safer option.Ofcourse nobody wants to kill but sometimes it's necessary the guy was obviously a nut as he was going to blow up the ship himself included.Anakin at this point wasn't in the dark side as he showed no emotion to killing the guy no empathy, fear, anger etc.Dark side users use emotions to fuel their power while jedi train to be emotionally neutral and calm.Anakin was later manipulated by the emperor/Darth Sidious
@@taskforceknight9336 Ur comparing reality to a space fantasy cartoon wherein the main characters are demi-gods with plot armor (the force) to wahzoo. The comparison doesn't work.
I suggest you actually watch Rebels - people do get killed, even moreso than in Clone Wars due to the bad guys being stormtroopers and not droids. Both shows can go dark and both have their merits. ;)
Icarusfication Yea except this is now a Disney production and unlike the Clone Wars that made big impact with Death and Doom and Destruction with a subtle vein of corruption. We all know that there is no way on this green earth that Disney would add anything dark in this show that is geared to children. P.S I went back and tried to watch it from the beginning and read the novel and I still dislike it.
Have you seen anything from season 2 onward? Because I can assure you there is some pretty dark stuff there. Like mind-trick-a-stormtrooper-into-commiting suicide dark. Having recently rewatched Clone Wars, I think Rebels can actually be a bit bolder in that regard.
Icarusfication That scene was epic as hell, there are good scenes like that mindtrick and Maul's ever looming present but that's all that is interesting to me.
@@havoc989 Not start smirking like "got you dumbass"? The entire point Is that he doesn't even mind killing when he belives to be right, and he Is even Happy about It. This Is exactly what later gets him to betray the Jedi and try to choke his Wife, as long as he belived something to be right he would do It regardless of other people, losing his grip on reality to his emotions Twisted by the dark side and ending up being used by Palpatine. Is not exactly a bad thing that he killed the guy, not even in question It was the right thing, the problem Is how he approached casually the situation.
This moment is fantastic and I'm glad everyone is appreciating that, but I'm surprised to see no comments mentioning the extremely subtle use of some notes from Darth Vader's theme this early on in the show. Amazing work to the show's creators.
I love this scene. It's not necessarily the fact that he killed him more than his attitude. He seems so confident and witty after murdering someone. It's writing like this that made the show great.
It's not murder you moron. The dude had dozens of innocent deaths under his belt. Letting him live would have ensured all of their deaths AND many more as Tal continued his terrorist attacks
Why do people not understand that murder does not = killing another human. Murder is the unlawful killing of another person without a valid excuse. Anakin did not board that ship with the intention to kill Tal Merrik, if Merrik did not plan to kill hundreds of lives and kidnap the Duchess he would've never been killed. Anakin killing Merrik was at the very least self defence (because he would've blown up the ship, killing Anakin) but realistically he killed Merrik to protect public safety (everyone on board the coronet). I would be confident and witty too if I just killed someone who was basically an intergalactic terrorist, about to kill thousands of people on board a galaxy famous ship that was hosting multiple highly sensitive senators on a trip to the capitol of the republic... (sorry for rant).
The best part about clone wars is the bits of vader you get to see come through. Ironically Anakin was one of the ones who showed some semblance of balance with the force initially, not adhering to Jedi goodness or Sith badness completely until the actual shift into Vader and string pulling of Sidius. Really ironic how throughout the franchise they never really show that off again, all good vs bad with very little grey areas
Look at Obi-Wan's face at 2:02 - he was ready to do it himself - Anakin not only showed how gangsta he is, he also spared Obi-Wan from having to murder someone in front of his Ex.
You kind of wish he would spot a surveillance camera and say to it, send me a copy for of that so I can upload it to the holonet later and share it with my fans. I bet I can get an awesome ad premium to go with this.
I love how Obi- Wan sounded more disappointed than angry when Anakin killed the dude. Like an annoyed older brother when the younger one steals a chocolate
I like the small detail of Anakin turning his head on the other side "I have heard everything but pretend I am not here". It's sad though that Obi-Wan was for a few seconds in the same room alone with the two most precious people in his life.
Anikan simply killing him doesn't necessarily make it cold blooded. One might see it as a necessary, but unfortunate action to save the lives of all those on the ship. But Anikan did it in a single instant without a single hint of remorse or solemn reflection. He treated the taking of life so casually. That's what was so cold blooded about the killing.
To be honest, dude was a terroristic piece of shit, I wouldn't have cared too, lol And looking from another point of view, allowing yourself to be fazed by the fact that you're a "cold-blooded killer" is a technical "win" on terrorist's part, since that's what he wanted, but going with "When it comes to doing what's necessary? You don't even imagine, now go to eternal sleep, scum," it just falls apart. 100% win on Anakin's part.
