Dave Filoni is a talented man, and he is obviously incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about Star Wars. His incredibly moving speech about the people who have worked at Lucasfilm for years and the passion they put into Star Wars almost had me in tears at Celebration Europe last year. But that knowledge doesn't stretch to the Expanded Universe. He only cares about what he, and the other new creators are making. So he has no gripes about cherry picking whatever he likes from the Expanded Universe and putting it into his creation, while changing it to fit his own agenda. That's his job, to create new stuff, no matter what the cost. If that means changing the entire character of Darth Maul so be it.

A lot of the expanded universe was never canon, Lucas did the exact same thing, and Lucas, for eg hated Mara Jade. Also the expanded universe was not carefully worked out, there's a lot of stupid stuff in there, so why wouldn't he cherry pick.
