Fun fact #1: Senator Mee Deechi from "Senate Murders" was Umbara's represantative in the Republic Senate. The Umbarans turned against the Republic, because of his murder. #2: The Umbarans were the first humanoid enemy faction in the series, which meant the crew needed to come-up with an infinitely replicateable non-droid design for the soldiers, without making it look like the umbarans are clones as well. Hence the space-suit design for their combat gear. In-universe it was explained that the helmet was sealed because the soldiers were put on a gas-based stimulant to keep them from tiring and make them more aggressive. #3: Hardcase, Kix and Jesse were the clones who were with Rex when he got shot in the chest in "The Deserter". #4: Sergant Appo is the clone who led the 501st during the Siege of the Jedi Temple (dubbed Operation Knightfall in-universe) in Revenge of the Sith. By that time he had been promoted to commander. Which begs the question: where's Rex? Also the arrow on Appo's helmet is a nod to Appa the Skybison from Avatar:The Last Airbender, who was voiced by Dee Bradley Baker voice of the clones. And of course Dave Filoni directed like half of Avatar's first season. I don't know if you know that series, but if you don't I honestly recommend it. #5: The conversation Fives has with Krell over the comm, while Hardcase is demolishing the hangar, is a reference to Han's "boring conversation anyway" with the Imperial officer while they're trying to rescue Leia in A New Hope. #6: If you listen carefully, Krell implies that he had foreseen the clones executing the Jedi during Order 66. He says at the beggining of the last episode, that he had seen clones turning against Jedi, and at the end he says he foresaw the Jedi losing the war.
In response to #4, we know where Commander Rex is during Order 66. I won’t say where incase you don’t know because you haven’t seen season 7 but I would assume you have based on the rest of your knowledge.
@@dr.adam_bright2601 I saw Season 7 was being criptic for Kev's benefit. That and as I recall, the official episode guide also teased Rex's whereabouts on Appo's entry
I love this arc but man it hurts to watch, the Clones are the most loyal characters in star wars and its painful having to watch that being used against them. Great video as always, man!
Whenever some nerd that starts spouting about how Clones Was is Star Wars dumbed down for kids! Blah blah blah!.... Yeah? Watch this episode and tell me how child friendly it is..... and really from here forward (probably quite a while before) it is clear this is a Star Wars show aimed at adults. Made by an adult fan (Filoni) for adult Star Wars fans.
Krell was actually a good way of showing how it was for a lot of the clones. Most Jedi were not as bad as him, but didn't treat the clones like Anakin or Obi Wan. Many saw them as nothing more than living droids, so when order 66 happened quite a lot of clones were happy to obey it. The 501st under Anakin and Ahsoka were by far the most respected and well treated clone unit, Anakin was one of the only Jedi who would have sacrificed himself for his men - which whilst very admirable from a strategic viewpoint the general needs to think of the bigger picture. It's an interesting way of viewing wars on earth but through fiction.
Which I find pretty odd, considering that's an attitude contrary to what being a Jedi means. Clone or not, I feel like you wouldn't expect Jedi to not care about a life
@@willfanofmanyii3751 to value life...? That seems utterly contradictory to everything the Jedi have done in canon. There's a difference between personal attachment and being apathetic to someone dying
@@doomsday1273 I agree with you and you are right, the Jedi treatment to death is how Yoda explains that you should "rejoice for those" who have become a part of the cosmic force. I feel like OP's comment is more of a Legends explanation as to why some of them were happy to commit Order 66, and not how we see it in canon. While I'm sure there are many who were apathetic, more often than not we see Jedi treating them with a lot of respect (Anakin, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, Yoda, Plo Koon, I believe Aayla Secuura was close to her clone commander in canon too).
@@lucasdolding6924 exactly, it's very rare to see a Jedi commander not care about their clones. From Ima-Gun Di, to Eeth Coth, to Kit Fisto, to Shaak Ti, and even with luminary unduli who was one of the most ready to let go of her own padawon, none of them showed any signs of being apathetic to their clones and worked very closely to them. I get the legends version that the Jedi used them as pawns essentially, but after the chips being cannon, and Krell CLEARLY being leaving to become a sith, Jedi generals not caring about their clones dying just seems contradictory to who Jedi are and how they constantly try and promote peace/saving lives
As much as i absolutely hate and despise Krell...i can't deny that he is an absolute badass with those two double bladed lightsabers. He would have been an insanely powerful dark side user if Dooku got to train him.
One of the saddest things is that ultimately, Krell is right. The Jedi will lose the war and a new power will take its place. Rex and the others don't even consider the possibility and just think that he's a separatist, because who would listen to the words of a traitor. Ironically Krell's tactics and style of command would have been perfectly suited for the Empire. Just throw bodies at the enemy and when that doesn't work, throw more bodies. There are always more soldiers. Easily one of the top 5 arcs in the entire show and my personal favorite, but higher highs are still to come. Loved the reaction and look forward to more. Happy May the 4th.
The Umbara arc is one of my favorites. It really captures what war and combat is ACTUALLY like. It is funny, of all the good, authentic military movies (Private Ryan, Lone Survivor, Black Hawk Down), a "kids friendly" Sci-Fi Cartoon is the one that seems to get the aspects of war down the most realistically. Umbara actually triggered some of my Traumatic Memories when I first watched it after my worst deployment, that is how realistic it was to me.
@@SofaandChill Yep! Krell is cruel but such a good villain. Gotta love Rex and the boys for stepping up. Found your channel yesterday and immediately subbed.🙂
20:03 Appo btw (here on the right and also at 33:31) is the Clone who leads th charge against the Jedi temple together with Darth Vader and the 501st in Episode III. His design is also inspired by "Avatar: The last Airbender", with the arrow on his helmet.
It sounds bad but I honestly couldn't help grinning throughout the video. Watching you come to terms with the horror and Krell's betrayal and the Clones having to deal with it all is just amazing. And all on May the 4th as well! You are now a true Star Wars fan! Also, Anakin left because the Chancellor ordered him to. Its been theorised he could feel the Dark Side in Krell and hoped that if Krell ran the 501st into the ground and killed off Anakin's men, then Anakin would be that much closer to turning to the Dark Side as well. Also after Umbara, Dogma was arrested for the 'murder' of Krell and most likely executed or 'decommissioned' as the Kaminoans like to put it. Simply because the higher ups (not the Jedi but the natborn officers of the GAR) enforce the rules incredibly strictly. So we lose Hardcase, Waxer, and Dogma in this arc.
One of the hardest things a soldier can ever experience on the battlefield is the death of his brothers from friendly fire. Imagine shelling entire groups of men with a mortar and then charging forward and gunning down eight more, only to discover they were your brothers.
Some names are basic, like Cody, Tup, Kix. But some have meaning. Fives got his name because his designation is CT5555, Echo got it cause he repeated orders that were relayed like an Echo. and Dogma, Dogma means a belief that is never doubted or questioned.
14:01 so that palpatine could convince him to the dark side.if the second battle of geonosis was ww2, umbara is the Vietnam War. also the reason obi-wan didnt know about krell is because the planet is covered with The Dark Side. 39:00 waxer if you look closely he has a painting of numa (the little girl from the ryloth arc) on his helmet. and its just sad 😭 also May The 4th Be With You. It's my first May The 4th.
Love how in Clone Wars, we get politics over all in the senate and politics on the ground with the Clones, debating if they should follow orders when they know its wrong. Also Rip Hardcase you Legend
I believe Krell can be a stand-in for how many soldiers saw Eisenhower during WW2, a man who “hid behind his own men.” Star Wars has a lot of historical/ religious undertones and this is one of many I’ve seen
Jedi avoid heroics. This doesn't make them evil. Sith take advantage of heroics. This doesn't make them evil. Krell confuses heroics and victory with personal gain. The foundation of evil.
14:00 It's because Sidious has control over the Droid Armies so he can always give Anakin a win or make sure he's not hurt. He wants to control the only person who can be stronger than him or destroy him. He doesn't control the Umbarans that closely.
I just noticed that when Rex orders Krell on his knees, it’s the exact same tone of voice and intonation as Anakin on Mortis. Like General, like Captain
“Ex Jedi current cock” 😂💀 May the 4th be with you! You did it, you got through Umbara! Hope you at least kind of enjoyed. You have more great arcs ahead. Cheers!
I have a few theories on this episode. Firstly, I think that Krell had a vague vision of Order 66 and the rise of the empire, hence his hate for the clones. I also think that Anakin was called away to corrasuant by Palpatine so that the 501st, Rex in particular, would get slaughtered by Krell, thus breaking another one of Anakin's connections and turning him closer to the dark side.
One of my favorite arcs of the series. This is one of the main reason Rex starts to doubt the cause, along with the death of Fives and the desertion of Cut. I think all these experiences helped him resist Order 66 and warn Ahsoka before giving in to it
I had two PE teachers in school, they can be very well represented by Anakin and Krell. The teacher we liked always participated in the tasks we had to do, the other one was just sitting in his chair telling us what to do, and his demeanor was just like Krell's. Guess what? I heard now he got sued by one of his students for public humiliation and harassment.
Well, its official your apart of the SW fandom now, you've celebrated May the 4th 🎉And thanks for making this today I really appreciated it Kev, thanks for being you and giving your honest reactions.
Welcome to the club sir. I was still in my 20s when this arc first aired. I was shaking with anger with almost everything Krell said/did prior to the tragedy and reveal. Then it happened, and got me way heated. It's not hard to understand why this arc is the most hated, and yet the most brilliant of the series. It really took us on a ride.
They say in the first episode of this arc that the Chancellor requested Anakin be taken away from the battlefield. Even when it's something else the Sith are always behind everything.
Fun fact: Krell is played by Dave Fennoy, the same voice actor who voiced Lee Everett in Telltales The Walking Dead. On another note: Loved this video, great reaction. Love watching other reactors from the North East (coming from a Geordie lad) especially ones who take an interest in great shows like TCW. Subbed.
In technicality, funny enough, Krell is actually an Imperial sympathizer BEFORE the Empire even came into being. This wasn't staged by Dooku at all, it was all Krell who had gotten a vision of the future, and he acted then accordingly. But regardless though, May the 4th be with you Kev. The Umbara Arc has been completed! There is still lots left to come. Stay tuned for more adventures and hardships.
The biggest surprise was not Krell’s betrayal for me. The biggest surprise this arc revealed is that the Separatists just casually have missiles that have a 100 megaton yield.
The reason they took anakin out of the fight is because palpatine is running both sides of the war, as chancellor and darth sidious not really favoring one side over the other as long as he comes out on top, thats why he requested anakin as if they capture umbara it could turn the tide of war.
There is a theory that says Palpatine ordered Anakin Back on purpose because he knew Krells Secret so that the 501st would have experience battleing Jedi as foreshadowing to the march on the Jedi Temple
So Anakin was sent away because of the Supreme Chancellor. My theory is that Palpatine knew about Krell and wanted to get the Clones that Anakin was really close to killed. Probably to further turn him to the Dark Side.
Random facts about krell, he has special lightsabers, well more unique at least The dual bladed savers fold down to look like two single blades when, holstered we'll say, they are also bigger than the average sabers,- it's currently 2am where I am and I am a.huge star wars fan but the need for sleep has caused my brain to forget the name of the saber type he has Krell is voiced by a man named Dave fennoy, a well loved voice actor knows for roles such as Lee in telltales the walking dead as well as multiple other roles in telltales games He would later voice Lucius fox in the batman series and in the Arkham Knight game
The chancellor called for Anakin and sent Krell; an opportunist who had recently forseen the betrayal of the clones and the fall of the Jedi. I suspect Palpatine knew that this would go down. Noticed Anakin's connection with his clones and thought that using Krell to kill off his treasured men, he could influence Anakin towards the dark side just a little more. Create some hatred, despair, mourning and regret.
I watched your reaction and I think you now fully understand why this show called brutal and what it’s NOT for kinds. And… oh man, believe, it’s just ONE of the most hurting episodes and it now will be just more brutal and dark mostly.
Great arc and great reaction:) One of the best arc's in this season and probably entire all show. Krell, though an asshole, but I note his insight. He correctly predicted the defeat of the war and the collapse of the Jedi. He even said the phrase about "tear apart from the inside." Apparently he was granted a vision of the future with the help of the Force, and he decided to somehow adapt to the coming changes.
No, he gave into his fears. He didn't want to die, be betrayed by Clones, flee into exile, or killed by the Sith. What he should have done was spread the word and prepared his culture and people for the incoming genocide. But that is the Harder Path to walk. It is much Quicker and Easer to Sell Your Soul to the Devil. This will help you understand (it helped me understand): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9nFMBBrliyQ.html
@@jeffreymeehan3116 Thanks, very useful addition. I always thought that he had a vision of the future, following the example of Osoka and her vision of the assassination attempt on Padma :) I wonder if Krell has been sabotaging Republic military operations since the beginning of the war, or just on Umbar? After all, past operations, despite the gigantic losses, were successful in terms of the goals achieved.
The character of Krell can be excused for his actions in Umbar He was an honorary fighter until he received the force vision the fall of the Jedii Order and the Republic, and Palpatin's great triumph. At his fears, he received what Anakin quoted as The Future is Uncertain. He met Doku when he was young and trained with him in the monastery. They were friends. Fearing the vision of the mysterious lord, he wanted to join his friend to save himself and the republic. Additionally, he was irritated by the fact that the Jedii only commanded those planets that had tactical significance, leaving the weaker planets to their own devices. The result of these movements was genocide that showed Krel that the order does not help the poor, but only those who have something in return. On Umbara as you can see, he was already consumed by the dark side that he practiced to be able to join the god. In my opinion, Krell is not the only culprit behind the Battle for Umbara
I think the main point of taking Anakin away is Palpatine's doing, since Palpatine is the one controlling from the shadows and preparing the Empire. Anakin has been seen by people of the republic as the hero, if Palpatine has him as his subordinate people will side with the Emperor. Taking Anakin away is probably Palp's thinking that this area is not worth risking Skywalker.
May the 4th be with you! Hope you’ve enjoyed your first Star Wars Day as truly part of the fandom. May is actually Star Wars month basically. A ton of anniversaries of movie releases.
May the 4th today, Revenge of the 5th tomorrow! :D And dude you got through that arc a lot better than I thought you would. I was thinking you would not take it well at all, but man you got through this pretty darn well. Keep your seatbelt on though. There’s more significant clone focused stories to look forward to so good thing you were able to get through this arc. Absolutely loved these reactions from the start, from the original trilogy, to the prequels, to now in the clone wars, and also sharing it with your son. Absolutely amazing and genuine. I hope one day I can share an experience like this with my own child. Keep it up brother! May the force be with you, always!
Oh dear lord m8. you're here, you're finally here kev. You've made it to the most interesting ARC in the clone wars. (in my opinion). I honestly LOVE your reactions! I was waiting for this one a long time, your reactions are the most genuine & entertaining. May the fourth be with you!
Calling anakin its probably it's a move by palpy to make more distrustful of the jedi as a whole And boi when waxer died a piece of me died and when ever i went and rewatch the ryloth arc my gut feels the pain again And yeah this arc hits hard and its probably one of the more war and clone centered episodes
Definitely one of the best arcs of the series. But absolutely heart breaking. I really love the stories that concentrate on the clones. Truly the unsung heroes of much of the entire Star Wars saga without most people ever giving it a single thought. Only those that watch Clone Wars would know. I can't wait for you to watch all the way to the conclusion...it's going to be a very exciting, emotional, heart wrenching ride. Glad we get to go on it with you. Keep up the good work. Can't wait for the next one.
Palpatine wanted Anakin only on winning side, he intented for Separatist to win on umbara front so he pulled Anakin back to not have such loss on his reputation. However lads from 501st proved him wrong, maybe it sold him on which legion to use on operation knightfall with order 66 :P
