I run Age of Rebellion (one of the Fantasy Flight SW RPG systems) from time to time. Suffice to say, the next one I run will have ships named in the honor of these pilots.

I'd suggest Gerams. Because if half my squadron just got stuck behind a shield and half of what remained were shot down, the last thing I would consider doing is charging my three remaining fighters toward a Star Destroyer, never mind actually knocking out it's shields. Crazy stuff.

I don't think they did know for sure that they were already dead as soon as he activated his saber. Hardly anyone in the whole galaxy knew what a Sith was. Sure, they may have known Vader was renowned as an enforcer, but I don't think much of anyone at all knew exactly how little chance they stood against him as a Sith Lord.

That's one of the reasons why I enjoyed Rogue One so much--so much of the fighting and sacrifice is done by the 'Grunts (or if you prefer, secondary and tertiary characters in the movie)' of the rebellion and not all the heroic moments are done by the 'Skywalker Bunch'; hell, You could say (to switch franchises for a moment) it aint' always Kirk and Spock, sometimes the efforts of the Redshirts are important.

The Rogues were the most badass group of happy-go-lucky space marauders you just had to root for them. Loved their over the top antics.

The X-Wing series books are what got me started in the (now legends) expanded universe. That and the X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and X-Wing Alliance games. Rouge Squadron and Wedge Antillies are the core of my love for Star Wars.

Which would imply that most of them died later in the Death Star assault.

Or had their X-Wings so damaged post-Scarif that they couldn't fight another day so got stationed in the planet. I want to believe...

I suspect that one of 3 things happened to the blue squadron pilots in orbit: they died in combat, they escaped and returned to Yavin and filled the ranks of red squadron, or they escaped and went to another rebel base.

They showed up. They became heroes. They died. That's the most war-like scene in the entire SW franchise, both EU and canon.

So true! For both sides, Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance shows their effectiveness in battle, the heroism of the Rebels and the might of the Empire in this movie very well. All without much interference (or at all) of the omnipotent plot armour. Making the Galactic Empire shows how effective their war machines and strategies against any groups against the empire brings justice to how they maintain their rule over the known galaxy. Thus it makes the Rebel Alliance not just a bunch of people taking guns and control sticks to annoy the Empire's military, but a serious and actual rebellion for their cause.

Lionheart X-ray we need more movies where plot armor isn't as big of a presence and factor. This would allow for stuff like this where we truly get to see the might of the Empire. Often cast aside as mere talk than action. The Death Stars were powerful but they were just one station. And the almighty Star Destroyers are constantly shown being outmaneuvered and/or destroyed because "THE PLOT" dictates they take the fall rather than ( like they should in most of these situations) kicking ass like they say they do periodically. This is why the Battle of Scarif is tied with the Battle of Endor as my favorite battle in all of the movies. BECAUSE it shows the true nature of both sides fighting raw without any of the pesky "FOR THE PLOT" moments happening for the sake of the plot. The Devastator flying in from Hyperspace and literally crashing through and shrugging off a rebel transport then proceeding to dispatch the rest of the Flotilla including the Profundity with its entire armament of Turbolasers ripping the ships to shreds is the display of Firepower from an Imperial Star Destroyer I've always longed and expected to see in action but never found, so was aptly very excited to finally see the Empire's main tool of destruction finally doing what everyone says they do and DEMONSTRATING why they are so powerful. The showcase of heroics from the rebels knowing it was a suicide mission but the story not telling it as such was welcome as stuff like Blue Squadron and Admiral Raddus can be given a proper remembrance of their heroics. It doesn't feel shoehorned in but rather a real depiction of war and the casualties of it. It felt natural. The rebels lost, but not before giving it their all and manning the sacrifices necessary for the greater cause. Not to mention this is the best demonstration of Vader in almost any medium but esp in the movies. As in this battle he instills the sheer terror and fear into his adversaries and acts with the ruthlessness worthy of the title of Dark Lord of the Sith. Portrayed with anger and ferocity along with the rightfully depicted helplessness of those forced to face him. Just my two cents.

He reminded me of a proper WWII RAF pilot. They had to know getting thru that gate was a one way ticket but they hit it hard anyway. Also, one of the most beautiful shots from THE most beautiful space battle of Star wars history is blue squadron locking S-foils and diving at the gate! Stupendous!!

Probably other depleted squadrons were combined together into one.

not uncommon for units of other depleted units to combine to make up a new squadron. they probably didn't have enough time to come up with a new insignia so they used their older ones.

If I remember correctly, Red squadron was originally supposed to be blue squadron in the first Star Wars movie, but they had to change it fairly late in the filming since the blue markings conflicted with the bluescreen filming. Probably an artifact of that change, the extras might have been using old costumes.

Steven Booker it's a possibility that what was left of Blue squadron merged with other squadrons while in the process of rebuilding the unit Because I also remember seeing some of the other X-Wing pilots wearing the Blue squadron isignia

Better question, why did the First Order uses the basic TIE frame instead of the TIE defender frame?

But i guess that can be explained through the fact that a Defender costs multiple that of a Standard TIE or Interceptor. The interceptor has only a marginal cost difference to a Standard TIE, while beeing far more effective in combat and beeing replaceable just as easy. On the matter of merchandise. So you want to tell me that producing Interceptors is bad for sales. Sorry but thats just not the case everyone will buy everything star wars.

First Order TIE FIghters are a new model known as the TIE/fo which has upgrades from the Interceptor such as better engines, weapons and even has new improvements such as shields like an X-Wing. Visually why it looks like the standard TIE probably for the sake of continuity in universe. The FO wants to be the successors of the Empire after all, might as well look like them.

I can't recall the source, but I remember reading somewhere, that the standard First Order TIE is superior to the much older Interceptor in basically every way. It has shields, more powerful engines, and the weapons are a serious upgrade over the Imperial era ships.

Thatslifebro as others have already said, while the first orders TIE looks like the Empires, it has many of the upgrades and Systems of the interceptor. But still I would love to see a FO Interceptor, the white panels and black frame would look gorgeous. :)

Half of Episode 3 is better. The opera scene, Order 66, the duel on Mustafar and the final scenes are amazing. Anakin being a unstable creep and the jedi being idiots are not so much.

Mathias Wetekam you are Correct. i caught that too. so i Think that leaves Geraldine and Barion as the only two survivors of Blue Squadron that were left in Space. hope they actually survived.

I think there were more than two survivors. Acording to Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide, Blue Squadron was larger than the stander twelve ship squadron with at least three U-Wings (Blue Eleven, that crashed on Scarif, Blue Eight, that did not pass the shield and joined Green Squadron, and Blue Nine) and probably four Y-Wings (Blue Twelve is said to be one of four Y-Wing pilot). So the three X-Wings that avoid crashing into the shield might all be Blues.

Mathias Wetekam Maybe 3. because only 3 X-Wings were left in Space due to the shield gate. and if you count, there were like 10 fighters that made it through. so they did seem to have a bigger squadron than normal. they only had 11 pilots with names tho.
