Personally this was my favorite High Republic middle grade book yet, I also didn't enjoy the Quest for the Hidden City much. But Tessa made me actually care and love these characters a lot, I really enjoyed the family/character driven story and became so attached to Rupper and specially Sky Graf! Their relationship was so cute :') I really want more of them. I started reading this one before Cataclysm but stopped at chapter 21 to avoid spoilers for Cataclysm, worked out great.
