I've started watching The Mandalorian recently which has really inspired me (which is a big thing for me!) to test out doing some starfighter cockpit backgrounds projected on my big TV, in my ongoing quest to find a better alternative to greenscreen but cheaper than hiring out an LED volume!
I'm rather happy with how this test came out, I found some cockpit images online earlier in the week and animated them in After Effects to have some flickering lights, I also animated some Tie-Fighters in Unreal, as well as the Z95-Headhunter for all the old school fans out there, and loosely put a story around it to have some sort of narrative. I then had a quick shoot on Saturday afternoon, and since everything was shot in camera it was pretty much done, bar some colour correcting tweaks.
I even spent quite a bit of time creating the cockpit dashboard with an animated radar readout playing on my phone, that was slotted in between the foam to look as if it was part of the whole piece. Unfortunately the whole thing didn't come out too well, but I think it get's the point across.
Also I didn't have access to an interesting costume or Mandalorian helmet, but ohh well, maybe next time...
Shot on a Canon R5 with an EF 50mm f1.4 lens and an RF/EF adapter, Tv is a massive LG 86UP80006LA 86". Beard was on loan from Kyle Katarn.
.....(and yes, I can't spell dimensions...)

I've tried this in the past with a smaller TV, but couldn't have such nice results. You've inspired me to revisit this technique once again. Really well done, mate!

Hey Leo! Congrats, very nice stuff! and funny xD I'm very beginner with Unreal and I'd like to ask you why you wrote you had to render the BG beforehand? This way you're losing the chance to move the camera live, is it right? 'cause if you pre-render your BG it won't move in parallax consequently if you move the camera, right? Also the starfighter dashboard prop we see at 1:40.. is super cool! Did you made it?!? Thank you!!

Hello there, cheers! Glad you liked the test!😁 For this example I made the backgrounds in Photoshop, After Effects, and a bit of Unreal to get pre rendered video files playing in the background. I mainly did it this way as I knew what shots I wanted (just a front and side) and I wasn't quite sure how well the test would come out, so I was just testing things really.😊 And yep, that dashboard was a little model I made out of foam and bits and bobs around the house, it came out surprisingly well despite being thrown together rather haphazardly🤣

Wow... now we're talking. That's really working well and you've solved the reflection issues... yay. I can't get over how authentic your virtual set looked; it really does look like that cockpit was real-world and expensive... very nice. The potential🤯! Keep it up sir.😃

Love this! VP options are getting better and better; but not just for the high end user, but for all. I think what you showed here is a fantastic example of what can be done with a little know-how, quickly, and in-camera without a multi-million dollar budget for gear. P.S. - was the star fighter pilot named Jean Valjean? lol

Yep! It's definitely an exciting time to get these new tools into the hands of all filmmakers!😁 And those Tie Fighters were piloted by Javert🤣

Do it!! That is if you have a spare grand and a half to spend🤣 Actually if you have a spare five grand, go for the OLED ones, but that's an awful lot of money!😅

hello @LeoTierney -- great job on the test and as others mentioned, the props, too! Question : what is the effective pixel pitch of your TV? I have an 85inch 4K TV and I'm trying to find a way to convert the resolution & Size to Pixel pitch descriptions found on LED wall panels. Just curious if you had a method to convert between these two. Thanks.

This was awesome! I hope you get into more 3d stuff. I loved the breakdown after. Really cool. Basically combines everything I did as a cameraman in the Marines and everything I'm learning now to become a better 3D artist. This gives me so many ideas. Thanks man! ❤

TV screen seems to be practical but what about 4k laser projector with 6400 lumens?

while i think green screen is still a smidge better in this situation, this was really well done.
@LeoTierney
@LeoTierney 2 года назад
Why do you think green screen would have worked better?
@hellohogo
@hellohogo 2 года назад
@@LeoTierney initially i thought this because of size limitations of a tv and the angles you can/can't achieve. However, i'm now coming around to the idea that keying well on a greenscreen is such a tedious task, that this is making more and more sense. When cinecom did their copycat vid on you, i just couldn't get myself to like the obvious issues with their key. Ultimately i think the solution is a combination of these techs.

@@hellohogo I only just googled Cinecom and found they're reference to this video, where did that come from! No wonder there's been a few more comments on this video recently🤣
