The Silent Killer of Virtual Production (and How to Avoid it!)

The first season of Disney's The Mandalorian ran into some serious issues with their LED volume while filming using virtual production. Moiré cost the show hundreds of thousands (maybe more!) in post-production fixes.
Moiré, more commonly known as aliasing, is a serious problem in virtual production. Today, we establish easy fixes to this problem that you can use on-set to quickly find a solution without having to re-calibrate your LED Volume.

Camera filters also helps a lot. A black promist or even a simple Soft can reduce moiré on LED volumes without having to shoot with a shallow depth of field ;)

What does that filter do to your foreground elements/actors?
@copilotco
@copilotco 2 года назад
That totally adds up, and brings some great texture to your shots

@@kubanaltan Depending on the filter strength, Black promist mostly affect really bright harsh lights and soften it so your characters and foreground elements will remain pretty neutral. It will just soften harsh reflection and maybe lower contrast a bit on them. That's a filter pretty much always used on set (not just LED volumes) these days just for the look ;) You can find exemple on youtube

What we have done on productions is to use frosted lighting gels or rear projection screen infront of the actual LEDs this will almost remove the risk of moiré.. Just an alternate solution... ;o) Great Video...

That is also what I would think about. But I'm far away from working with these :D both in experience and possibilities, so probably it will be solved by the manufacturers until I get there :D if ever.

Frosted gels are a great idea-- how does it work out when you need a hard, direct light from the panels?

Learned a lot from this! Including how to say moiré, finally 😬 thanks guys!

Fantastic video. I have found diverging the led position in the x,y that Moiré is radically reduced and as there no defined overall pattern between the camera pixel matrix and the screen pixel matrix. The led tile looks kind of odd as the LEDs look like they have just been splatted onto the panel by a shotgun. There are also a number of other issues when using an LED screen as a volume all of which can be addressed, this requires a led panel to be made for LED volume not using existing rental panels which are not really ideal for the purpose of background or even a green screen.

We're very specific about our tiles for that exact reason-- amazing comment :)

Good, slick video on an industry that is similar to what i do. Rare to see an account that details the hectic and unbelievable life of live and XR event technicality. Subscribed!

if you shoot shallow depth you can just juse a greenscreen :D Use soft camera filter. Of frost in front of the LEDs
@kubanaltan
@kubanaltan 2 года назад
Frost filter surfaces will cause reflections on the surface. But it can be used in some edge cases like external windows.

The reason we love virtual is because of the realistic, real time lighting you get-- plus, no rotoscoping :) Both have their strengths, for sure!

We have a red line on our studio floor about 4.5 meters out from the wall. Do not focus past this point. 🙂
@copilotco

That's a brilliant idea. Sometimes, the old fashioned way is the best way!

Is there a reason why you located a red line in that distance from the wall? I am trying to find formula(if it existed) to calculate the distance but can't find it.. So I am just trying every distance from the wall manually.
@ahrenmorris6053
@ahrenmorris6053 Год назад
No hard math. We just framed a camera up in the volume at the "sweet spot" for shooting and tried a bunch of different len's to get a feel for where moire kicked in. It's very lens/camera/focal distance dependent so that 4.5 meter rule can safely be broken for certain shots. The real trick is is always be monitoring the camera feed live in at least 4k. Some moire problems don't show up on a 2k monitor. We have a person whose eyes are glued to this feed for every job and shot as part of internal quality control.

genlocking, phase shifting, scan rate of panels and many other things are important!

All great points-- We plan to do a whole separate video on genlock/ scan rate soon!

It has noting to do with the screen resolution exceeding the camera resolution. It has to do with pixel pitch of the camera's image element being a close match to the pixel pitch of the screen projected on that element. Be more scientific!

What companies build the screens? I know about Stagecraft, but whos actually making these? Please no hate, just curious
@elijahloeffel771

We do it at Evolve Meda Group, so do several other companies. Many of them are tied to a specific product or work flow.

Thanks for the comment, Dave! Fun fact-- Stagecraft doesn't build their own screens, at the moment there are a few different players, like ROE for example. It's changing so quickly, and some are better than others, but if you want to know more feel free to email us at hi@copilotco.io

Kind of sounds like a problem nvidia would throw their Tensor Cores at
@copilotco
@copilotco 2 года назад
For scan lines-- for sure. For moiré, it's a problem with camera resolution/ chip overload. If the the resolution < the overlaying pattern on screen, then you'll get moiré. BUT, if nvidia makes camera sensors any time soon... 👀
