Micah doesn’t get enough credit for his tactical analysis. He doesn’t just stop at “try harder” or “You’re great players”, he has a level of understanding of how modern football works and also an empathy for the footballers themselves. Nothing irritates me more than people talking like the old school England squads loved their country more or had a bigger sense of pride, as opposed to simply acknowledging the complete lack of modern football tactics which they are all accustomed to
Always gives modern players an excuse typical mentality of well there all winners bullshit coward players can't hack the pressure so let's be nice to everyone
For real, hes slowly becoming the complete pundit, entertaining and educated. Hes just abit shit with football trivia, like he doesn't know anything that happened pre 2000. 😂😂
It’s funny how before the tournament everyone was worried about the defence without Maguire yet Guehi and Konsa have been brilliant and haven’t looked out of place at an international tournament.
Absolutely, heard one commentator saying we need maguire for headers in opposition box, uhhh no thanks I’d rather take a better defender, to the people negative on this thread, maybe these teams have not been high level, they’ve also all been extremely well organised, England generally play better against teams that want to open up and leave some gaps at the back
Saka refused that England looses this game. I am a Germany supporter, but Saka stood out , man. He was dangerous upfront , almost impossible to stop, and had defensive skills in the back. He is about to be worldclass.
Not a fan of Arsenal fan but when Saka stepped up for his pen I said to myself "you got this, son". I was so pleased and proud of him for the character he showed as a man and his redemption for the nonsense he previously endured.
Nothing against the guy personally but the arsenal fans just overhype him. He's a good quality player but not world class by any stretch of imagination
I’m confused where all this Foden prop is coming from? He was invisible for 90% of the game and rightfully got hooked, the media protects him so much for some reason
I agree with you. Southgate needs to do that and makes use of any other players he has selected. Surely they don't want to be just Kane's backups. They have qualities too.
@@jamesjackson7004 Kane looks knackered, first season in Germany has taken a lot out of his tank, he needs resting up, bring him on second half as an impact player if needed...
as a german seeing a team with overall great players not getting to their top level but going trough no matter what, by great moments of one out of the squad and if necessary winning PENs... it reminds me of decades long ago 😅 Congrats - next stop Semis
Personally I felt bad for Germany because I think you deserved to beat Spain, it was a great effort. But as you say also being clinical and getting that bit of luck is a big quality in football. Thanks for the message.
Im born 84 1990 germany played stunning ,same for england what a squad and the semi final eng ger was a 50 50 thing, after 1990 till 2006 yes germany played not a beautiful football ,come on england no i dont say it😂
I don't think I've ever seen a better penalty shootout performance from any team ever. We can criticise Southgate for various things but he's certainly broken some hexes.
@@TheSpoovy dude i witnessed gerrard Lampard Beckham missing penalty. Bt this teenage group was effortless. 💥 Southgate deserve some respect from those so called club Legend who are now Pundit in media😡
Yeah Foden was uselesss. I've got a feeling the pundits have been told off because they've been too negative, so are instead trying to find praise in an awful performance
@@bubbachua Has Foden gelled with anyone in an England shirt? Hes obviously great at City, but seems hes not very good at adapting to different systems/tactics.
they showed a good ball he played during half time and said he was amazing. i had been thinking he was useless. his overhead kick attempt was pretty funny
I feel like i watched a different game to Gary and Micah. Better yes, but still ponderous, barely a chance created, ALL the play down the right side till Eze came on, aimless passes between the central defenders before a pass to Pickford and his aimless hoof down the pitch. Only when the subs came on dis we start to take men on. The surrealism of the pod's take on the game epitomised by Micah talking about Gordon coming in on the left in the coming games! Poor kid has had about 5 mins to date, whilst we have cried out for pace and penetration on the left all tournament.
Yes. Is it their job to hype up a very average performance to build excitement? They jump on a couple of moments and make it sound like we've beaten Brazil 70.
Of all the teams left in the tournament only Spain have 'played' well. The teams who played better than us France and Holland are all out. Do you think Turkey, Austria, Germany and Portugal would take that or would they all to a man prefer to be in the tournament still???
Still playing hoofball and still struggling to create chances. But at least we're organised. It's a low bar these days, but hey we're at the semis somehow.
My brother in law nailed it when saying “England have gone from 5% to 20%, yes it’s better, but still not good enough to be confident we’re going to win it”. In that quarter final they played high tempo for 5 mins after they conceded and scored. Then immediately dropped the tempo. Imagine what might happen if we went off at a high tempo from the start? We have the potential talent in the team to blow people away. That’s where the doubt & frustration creep in.
It's not a God given right to win it (or anything). Nobody can be that confident naturally...Portugal/France/Spain/Germany have been a part of the tournament too. You just need to be in it to win it and England are still in it. That's all you can ask for and the usual slice of luck that accompanies the eventual winners or a competition
Spain and Germany are levels above. However, the best team doesn't always win, especially in knockout tournaments. Would like to see a different striker and two left footed players on the left. Think we could be at Spain and Germany level with these changes
Many times throughout the game Kane was so deep that there were 4 players higher up the pitch than he was!!!!! If he is going to start, he needs to get that play style GONE!
The disrespect I was hearing on Saka’s name was infuriating people were calling for him to get dropped when he has been englands best performer for two years now, glad the lad shut his haters up
That's what's sad about all of the punditry. Saka this tourney was the best of a bad bunch. Yet Foden is undropable. I get they want Cole Palmer in the set up but choose someone who is ineffective
I think Gary was incredibly generous about Kane. The guy spent most of the walking about and his best moment came on the edge of his own box. Looks knackered from minute 1. He won't be dropped but definitely should be imo.
Kane’s average position in the match was along side Mainoo and Rice, well behind Foden and Bellingham. He definitely did not stay forward on the defenders, Gary needs to review his prescription.
Kane has been winding me up all tournament. We go long to him and he tries spinning the defender every fucking time. That is not his strength and he doesn’t know how to do it. He doesn’t feint, he doesn’t push deep to leave space behind. He backs into the defender and just turns to run and every time the defender has a free header or chest down. I don’t know if he’s a moron or if he has no faith in his hold up play.
That's coz Gary is terrified after the backlash he got after he criticised him earlier in the tournament. He won't criticise any of them for the rest of the tournament
@@kemchy3838 So if somebody scores a simple tap in, in an important game it's less valuable because anybody can score it, that's the logic youre sticking with yeah? muppet.
isnt that also some credit to Switzerland? we knew they would be tough to break down and difficult to get past, but now england have done it....its a kinda "it was only Switzerland" attitude. I do agree England can be much better and need to be, but also gotta understand we been playing teams who have sat deep and had a very good unit and structure, especially the Swiss.
I also wonder if England do play well say against Netherlands and even in the final there will be some excuse....like "the other team didnt turn up that day, they were awful" or "its because Rodri was injured" or "it was a lucky england penalty" or "it was because other team had man sent off". It will be something I guarantee it!
I am surprised mainoo is not getting more plaudits since he came into the team. He has been very good. I guess people want to moan about Southgate and the fact we are not winning 3 4 nil
@@SimonFlynn-un1ur As a Utd fan I disagree, Kobbie is getting plaudits. Game by game he's replaced Trent, Connor, etc. He's the starter in midfield now.
Spain and Saka have taught us the importance of your wide players being great dribblers who are good at 1v1 situations. So I’d like to see Southgate fix the left hand side, by potentially playing Eze in the opposite position to Saka
Foden excellent? Did we watch the same game? Constantly slowing it down when he should speed up, always backwards or sideways except lame attempted chip crosses that never threatened. Then playing 20 minutes at a snails pace before getting subbed. Saka and Mainoo were the best two players on the pitch.
We had three shots on target in 120 minutes and spent ET camped deeply in our own half, frantically firefighting. Against Switzerland. Let's not get carried away
@@romanoonamor7690yea, we've conned out way into the semis. Against Slovenia and Switzerland. We played for penalties yesterday and were hanging on in extra time. The one benefit I see with Southgate is that he is a complete luckbox. Other than that, we are dire to watch
You realize Switzerland are a very good team. They've recently been to most major tournaments. Reached the semi's of the last euros. Language like this is why people say English fans are arrogant and disrespectful.
Lineker n Richard’s were at their best when they said what they really felt. When they got a bit of stick back from the England squad they have gone back and sat on the fence. Fact is we have been shocking
Disagree. I think they have been honest throughout. Don't forget this was a higher level of opposition and was indeed a bit better from England. It still needs to improve though
more like they've jumped over the fence to the other side and run a hundred miles away from it! This was all a planned, hugely over-the-top, transparent act so they didn't look like they were hindering the team.
The half-time analysis was genuinely baffling. Hyping up Phil Foden, especially. I actually disagree that it was that much better than the other games. It's clear the pundits are wary in criticising due to the previous backlash from the players. That was Kane's worst performance yet, but it was barely highlighted like previous games.
@@Adamm357 agree shearer n lineker proper got stuck into him last time and rightly so. We pay them big money so they should be honest in their assessments of how bad they were
I actually thought Foden had a decent first half and did look better than previous games. He seems to be the only player willing to try and press consistently. Kane was abysmal last night and looks like he can't run
Thats what I was thinking half time. The performance was a slight improvement from the rest of the tournament, but the pundits were going on like we were 3-0 up at half time.
"the tactics worked" is such a false conclusion. We were saved by one extremely good strike again, and still had to go to penalties against a team like Switzerland. The lack of threat down the left hand side is still worrying, it makes it so easy for teams to get the double on Saka because they can be fairly sure the ball will shifted that side. Kane is beyond useless this tournament.
The game was 50:50. A plus is that England didn't lose the ball like they were in previous games. The left hand side was non existent, but there's a good chance Southgate will start Shaw in the next game which may change that.
@@ninety_ldn lol the tactics didn't work - we created nothing and were being outplayed throughout the second half until switzerland scored the opener - then we changed 3 players and abandoned the system and immediately scored lol such a weird conclusion to draw 😆
@@samrizza8785 We didn't abandon the system, it was a bit confusing but we still kept the same 3-4-2-1 formation. Eze and Saka playing wingbacks, Bellingham dropped to where Mainoo was, Palmer and Foden behind Kane. The back 3 looks more structured, wingbacks stayed high although we weren't creating much from the left and we didn't have people in the box. Luke Shaw starting at left wing back and playing even 60 minutes will help with balance. Kane needs to stay up. Kane Bellingham and Foden will look to work together. Palmer will look to be one of first subs on, so you can keep him for penalties later. Toney will likely be an extra time sub. Although I would prefer a formation of 3-4-1-2 later on playing with Kane and Toney upfront, with Palmer behind them. In theory we should be able to create more chances against Netherlands but we will see
You must be new to football. You can play well and lose, you can play badly and win. England played well, so did Switzerland, it was a close game between two good teams. Also, you're literally disagreeing with world-class footballers. Who do you think is more likely to be right? You or a former England International player?
@@bipolarminddroppings they have pay slips to think of - all I see is slow ball movement 2 or 3 touch sideways back passing - and there are world class players - give me a break
I’m sorry. Foden did nothing again. He’s a passenger. I’ve not seen him play above a 5 this tournament. Receiving the ball on the half turn means nothing if you don’t affect the game.
I don't know if they're running a Psy Op, but I see very little from Foden. He is so overrated its untrue. I know a decent player when I see one but I find Foden very unconvincing at this level. I think he's too frail to assert himself. To me he looks like an U15 playing in a mens' game.
He’s just carried the best team in England to a fourth consecutive title, has won a treble and won 6 Prem titles… he was good yesterday cycling the ball, looking forwards getting into space but because his stats didn’t reflect how good he was you have ‘Mesolithic Man’ saying he’s average!? Fuck me. Some of you don’t watch the game. Andrea Pirlo’s numbers as a 10 weren’t great but he dictated. Foden was good yesterday, not great, but nobody has been great.
Im a United fan, and I was screaming down the house when Saka scored honestly, I was so happy for him after everything that he's wrongly been through, what an incredible show of character. Was very very please happy for him, and after he'd also kept us in the tournament as well!
Rice & Saka men of the match for me. Great to see the midfield & team function. By gum Shaws important for us 🏴 hope has returned after this one.
Saka has been positive in an almost completely negative start to this tournament. Has he been the best? No, but positionally and mentally the most positive player who looked like he wanted to score. Hes been the saviour of England in a sense, glad he got his goal.
his twin who plays at city where the team is so dominant he gets a sea of space and time to shoot from outside the box or to find a target before someone exposes his lack of physical strength.
i cant remember who it was but a pundit last night said southgate showed his tactical class by bringing on subs that affected the game positively after 80 minutes of shite. i swear the FA have private meetings and ask these guys to please be nice to southgate
Harry Kane was dead on his feet 50/55th min needed him off. Its abit like Ronaldo the focus is on him and if he doesnt look fit enough we are struggling with him upfront
I don't understand everyone's insistence on praising Foden. He was OK. In a system that COMPLETELY caters to him. He had a decent 1st haf, and was completely anonymous 2nd half. Yes, he's pretty good on the half turn. But when teams sit back, he doesn't have the guile or creativity to unlock defences with a clever pass. He's the most one dimensional number 10 I've ever seen in the supposed "world class" bracket. Good technique does not make you world class. Saka has to bend over backwards and carry his team over and over to get even a fraction of the pundits' praises that Foden gets for picking his nose.

Best comment I've heard so far was from Barry Glendenning of the Guardian who said - I was watching the BBC coverage at half time and thought that I saw something else, almost like I was Principal Skinner - am I out of touch? Turns out he wasn't
Preferred it when they were being honest. Almost in disbelief watching MOTD at half time and how much they were raving about the performance. Maybe they were drinking plenty of wine before going on air too. Watching a completely different game to me and a lot of my friends. 5 shots in 120 mins of football of which only 3 were on target. Swiss had almost twice as many and they were better than us in extra time. We've been incredibly fortunate with the qualification groups, groups at the tournament and how every draw has played out under Southgate. I believe that even the sides that didn't get out of the group in 00,14 or even qualify in 08 would beat this team. The historically stronger teams such as the Italians, Germans, Dutch etc are a shadow of their former selves. Delighted to be in the last 4, but lets not kid ourselves here.
Everyone was saying England would probably lose this match, me included. Now that they won the same people are still complaining and searching for reasons to be negative. I’m really happy about this match.
That's what I say enjoy it, I get the feeling if England win the whole thing and I feel they will, they will still be saying negative things like that, 😂 Southgate deserves a little bit of credit surly?? I mean in the semi's not to shabby, from Ireland... Good luck England!!!

this podcast has been one of the highlights of this competition, and honestly summer sports overall. the format/setup feels like I'm in a friends kitchen or living room. sincere thanks to you all!
You can only beat what's in front of you and every team knew who could be in their side of the bracket if favourites topped their group. And not all the favourites topped their group. If we beat Netherlands and make finals. We could be against Spain who have been the best team so far, or against France, who we should have faced in the Semis. Either way, we'd still have to beat the team in front of us. Every team in England's half of the bracket probably believed they could make finals.
Huge fan of the pod, I’ve watched quite literally every episode since you started it and love it! I thought the punditry and analysis on BBC was well off the mark after the game last night. It was far too positive for what was another terrible performance in all honesty. If you’d listened to the analysis, you’d have thought we’d played like 2002 Brazil when, in reality, we were extremely poor.
i love this pod but ITV, BBC (except for shearer who is not as bad as gary or micah for this) and a few of the major publications like the guardian are living in a fantasy world with their praise for southgate. every other word has to be something comforting as though he's a toddler on the brink of tears
The first half was a lot better than what we've seen to be fair against a much better side, swap Kane for Toney and Trippier for shaw and I think we put two goals away. Let's not forget switzerland aren't half bad and have had a great tournament so far. The second half was poor but by the time we got back to the analysis we were all buzzing off the penalty shootout. Tactically the first half I think we nailed it, pushing Trippier and Saka really high, Saka running their left back ragged and rice dropping deep to create space for bellingham on the left-centre channel, again the left side and up front really took a lot out of us, passing was a significantly faster and sharper and we saw a lot more forward passes in comparison to the tournament so far, still can improve in this area but switzerland had barely any chances. Gareth really got away with it in the second half again, tactically got it completely wrong, reacted too late and who knows what formation we were playing in extra time, 4 number 10s, eze at wing back, shaw at centre back.
As a Scot, have been saying for years~ England is possibly the only team on the planet that doesn’t need a manager. Just let the boys play.. they will find the way!
Much better than the previous four games - seriously? No shots on target till Saka scored. Kane running around to no effect, starved of service. Far too much reliance on Saka to break the line. Spain vs Germany was a different level. Thank goodness for the penalty takers.
You didnt mention that every time the ball was cut back in or crossed in, Kane was never in the right position to score. That is his only reason for being in the team. Time to bench him and play another striker, a decent captain would do that.
Wondering how passionate Jimmy Hasselbaink will be when 🇳🇱 & 🏴 meet given he's part of Southgate's coaching staff and a close friend of his from their times @ Middlesbrough ❤❤❤
i’ve accepted that england are on the same level as slovenia, denmark, slovakia and switzerland hence why we’re drawing with them after 90mins. that is now england’s level under southgate, so we should be delighted to scrape through on penalties.

They didn’t have a shot on target until Sakas goal and until after he was forced to make a substitute post the Swiss goal. What game was Richards watching?! Yes it was better than previous weeks but the positive play after the substitutes showed penalties could have been prevented.
Really starting to rate Gary since I started following these podcasts, he genuinely knows his stuff, not afraid to say it how it is, but when Alan was on video call...priceless 😂😅
It was better than our other games but it still wasn’t great. Our formation change helped nullify Switzerland but we got lucky 2nd half. Southgate again did nothing to change it and we went behind. But for a Saka wonder strike we would have lost. The subs didn’t really change the game. After our goal we didn’t create anything really and just accepted pens. Soon as we come up against a good side we’ll lose
I just don't understand how you guys are talking about England putting in a performance. We were poor again! Marginally better but still super poor! I heard Micah call us brilliant on the post match. What game are you watching?!!!
I'm sorry but we are all completely papering over the performance of the game! It was exactly the same team as previous with just a slightly different setup which in the last game everyone was fuming about his selection but for some reason no one complained this time? The team played a little more front foot for a while but started reverting back to backward and sideways plays....we eventually get punished for this with them scoring, at this point its like 75 minutes and we had made no subs even though we cried out for it! Suddenly he does his reactionary subs like always, England push for a goal, get it with some talent rather than a sub! We then push for last 10 minutes which was the best part of the whole game. Extra time, we revert back and sit back, tbh we should have lost if they had better players! England win by the brilliance of the players taking the penalties and a horrendously bad one by Akanji!! I'm all for being positive when it is due but the result is a complete smokescreen for the actual game. We play like that vs the Dutch and we are out! But again Southgate will get the plaudits for making another Semi final....The narrative is a joke tbh....no England manager has had draws like Southgate has....the tactics are always horrendous, the subs are always reactionary....we win only by the talent in the squad and it has been like this for 6 years!!!!! Only a proper decent CV'd manager would have won Euro 2020 and done better in other games!!!
It should always be said how disgusting the reaction was to Saka and the other boys from the last Euros. Saka in particular has had fantastic seasons since and then to not only score to save England but to score the penalty the way he did. The mentality for such a young kid, he deserves all the praise.
I never understood this. I used twitter at the time of the last euros. And all I saw was people talking about how the racist abuse they got was awful. I then tried to find this racist abuse on Twitter, on England instagram posts. There literally was nothing
Gary ... what game did you watch? Foden was shocking... didn't even notice he was on the pitch, Kane was nobody, not even in the game. The starboy took it upon himself, and won the game. You said they pressed? 😂😂 not at all..
Everyone’s talking about kane, no one’s talking about how average foden’s been.. he’s a subuteo player, doesn’t take anyone on or break lines, no pace, hasn’t offered anything other then re-cycling the ball. He’s lost without haaland, Eze & Palmer both more dangerous.
I’ve really enjoyed this podcast through this tournament, it’s been much better than the overlap. Micah is underrated with his tactical analysis probably just because he’s a fun guy and Gary’s analysis is top draw when he’s on this kind format where he can give his opinions.
It was a good goal. A slightly improved overall performance. Effective and clinical penalties. That's about it. Media getting carried away as usual. It's either feast or famine with the English press. And in both instances they're usually over-egging the pudding.
I don’t know what tactical south gate did we were poor way too slow in Posession. The line up was exactly the same, he tricked everyone that we were playing a 3-5-2 when it was the same 4-3-3 We had Walker stones konsa tripper Rice mainoo Bellingham Saka Kane Foden It’s reverted at times 3-5-2 Walker, stones konsa Saka Rice mainoo Trippier Bellingham Kane foden To be honest it looked a lot more like the first formation. Please go analyze again England didn’t play any better it was better than Slovakia but come one one shot on target. I’m an England fan but this is utter non sense to praise southgate.
Must be the wine talking. Absolute ridiculous suggestion. Then Linekers comes in with "Eddiee Howe perhaps". As if Eddie Howe and Frank Lampard have done the same in management. FFS.
For 75 mins England were poor. Switzerland scoring finally brought the necessary changes and that’s when we started to prove something. Mainoo did really well. The problem was nobody was running into the box and very slow passing.
The ballers in this squad that always want the ball and make things happen are Palmer, Mainoo and Trent Then there's excellent wide options and three great strikers to choose from Bellingham is a force of nature, but needs to grow into a deeper Bryan Robson type role No reason at all why this team can't dominate this level and play great stuff while doing so The mentality of these guys is impressive - they're being held back right now
Football today is far more competitive than it was 25/35 years ago, teams are fitter and more tactically estute. The days of ovewhelming teams is gone.
Individuals in the 90's are much better. R9 or Van Basten would score 60 + goals a year in the EPL. Especially with the rules! They'd be worth 150+ million today. R9 in his first season at Barcelona scored 47 in 49 games. At only 19. He was phenomenal at every club. Won the world cup for Brazil. 2 serious knee injuries cut his career short. Van Basten scored 300 goals with 80 assists. Played 302 times only. Due to problems with his ankle. Retired at 28. They faced the best defenders. Bad pitches. Played in a time when it was tough! People today donot understand that these modern footballers are athletes. With a tactical set up. Class is Class my friend. R9 was better than Messi and CR7. Faster, stronger, better dribbler, and shooter. Was deadly one on one. Deadly long shot. Van Basten was pure class. Both feet, Great shooter, strong, Great in the air, Great first touch and turn. Both smart and great at breaking the lines. Making runs. Anticipation like a sniper. Modern football, like most sport is about being athletic. Brains aren't needed. Robotic players who cannot create or produce a moment of individual brilliance. These Euro's have been boring. Worst in history. Spain, Germany, Turkey and Georgia are the only teams that haven't put you to sleep.
"Significantly better". 0 clear cut chances, 3 shots on target. Along with your take on Foden's performance, you must have been watching a different game.
Honestly, what game did these 2 watch? It wasn't the same game as I watched, or Alan shearer watched (he was critical), or even Gary Neville watched who said the second half was dire. I genuinely thought when it went to the studio on the BBC broadcast that they were watching a totally different game. England were terrible again, saka was great and the penalties were well taken, Palmer had a good game for the short period he was on, but overall we were terrible and 10 mins away from going home.
Did you two watch the same match as the rest of us? They played negative football for 70 minutes only attacking properly once they had conceded. Just imagine if they played like that all match. Then we should be shouting about how well they had played. They are not playing to their full potential because they are frightened of losing the ball or conceding.
Played against one of the most tactically superior teams in the cup, maybe the most. Switzerland are hard to break down, we beat them and you still cry? Just don't support england anymore bro. We don't need you
Switzerland nearly beat Germany and we act like they’re a brainless team we should be smashing 3-0. We didn’t play well but we still beat one of the better team in the Euros. Miserable England fans always looking for something to complain about just enjoy the win
Switzerland hammered Italy & were very unlucky not to beat Germany so it was never going to be easy. But yet again we fluke our way through a game with an individually brilliant goal. Could not care less how bad we are we’re 2 games away from possibly winning 🤷🏼♂️
Love Gary and Micah for their in-depth analysis and love them for being honest and real... Micah is awesome, I've always liked his humour...and Gary is such a professional with a sneaky sense of humour. This podcast is amazing.
