Starching with Glue! How I permanent starch my crochet pieces!

Today I am permanent starching some crocheted Angels and SnowFlakes with starch I made from mixing white glue and water.

lovely! what is ratio of glue to water? belong to a group called Random Acts of Crochet Kindness & am making some snowflakes (among other items - flowers, worry worms, hearts, etc., etc. - usually they r dropped off in parks onto trees, benches, branches, fences, etc. for ppl to find along with a little poem to brighten their day & hopefully lift their spirits - I am housebound b/c of lymphedema & severe osteo-arthritis in my one hip so my makes will be donated to a seniors home (my friend works at) - on her floor she has 135 residents so am trying to make different items for them (maybe hv a hunt or something or just leaving around different areas for them to find) - came across a nice snowflake pattern on you tube & made it but wanted to "stiffen" it up to make it look better & came across yr video - luv it by the way - like yr items, they r beautiful (wud like to try yr angels they wud be great for my stash) - will hv to try & find them online - I believe u stated that is where u got pattern from. Hopefully u can answer my question about glue to water ratio - u make it look so easy - hope I hv the stamina to do this. Tk u and stay safe.

Greetings Helen! I love that you are crocheting and donating your work in such a meaningful way! I dilute the glue/water in equal parts. It should look and pour like milk. It also helps to soak your crochet pieces in water first and wring them out really well, then dip them in the glue mixture. Try and use a glue like Elmers or just a normal white glue. Don't use a super thick glue for this or you will be left with some residue that will not look so great. I did a flat angel for residents of our PCH one Christmas, they loved it. I believe I found the pattern on Pinterest. Good luck with your projects! Dale

Many tks for getting bk to me - luv the way u do video on how to stiffen - loved yrs the best of all I had seen - luv the angels u did - trying to find on you tube to see if I can find them - they r very lovely - u do great work - hope I can find and mine look as good as yrs - stay safe!

I use #10 crochet cotton for my ornaments. I find it makes the nicest ornament. This pattern is very similar to the one I use. Hope this link works. ilove-crochet.com/crochet-guardian-angels-free-pattern/

@@Erndales Hi Dale, many tks for getting back to me - I hv arthritis in my hands & find it difficult to use thin thread like u mentioned - hands don't want to work - tk u so much for sending me link to pattern - was having difficulty in finding what looked like yrs - searched on Pinterest & You Tube & had found that one u suggested - u were lucky to find the one u did - it is almost impossible now to find a flat pattern (or one that looks good) there r a lot of patterns for angels but not too many I want to make for my project - again, tk u for taking the time out of yr busy schedule to notify me of pattern - very much appreciated - nowadays ppl don't want to be bothered it seems. Hi Helen Dec 11 2021 i seen a star double sided as if she alittle air between front and back wonder how to do that ?

@@annw2404I have seen snowflakes that are dimensional like that. I believe they are made in pieces, then starched separately and glued together. Perhaps the star is starched with something between the them to puff them out. My bear pieces are done with a balloon inside, when dry you pop the balloon and the piece is round like a ball.

Hi Dale, just to let u know - cannot get that pattern either - it is a private website - not having much luck finding a flat angel pattern - either in a foreign language, cannot access website, or hv to pay for pattern (sometimes not cheap) or u hv to buy actual product. Who knew it wud be so hard to find a pattern for a flat angel - anyway, many tka for yr help. Helen
