Check out this first time watching this bad sci-fi movie reaction video for Starcrash, and see if I can make it as a horror movie rookie. Horror is a genre I've barely explored, mostly because I'm a huge wuss. Typically my Halloween movie viewings consist of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. This year I decided to expand my horror movie knowledge and try and watch these horror movie fan favourites.
Check out my first time watching this classic 1978 Roger Corman movie, Starcrash, and enjoy my reaction video! Don't forget to like and subscribe for more videos! If you have suggestions for other horror movies I should watch, comment below!

FYI Roger Corman had nothing to do with the actual movie, the director was looking for an American distributer and Corman bought the rights under his label. If you want an actual Corman directed/produced sci-fi, check out "Battle Beyond the Stars" from 1980. it's Sci-Fi cheesiness on a bigger budget!

@@ReelReviewsWithJen Bonus, a very young James Cameron made the model ships for Battle Beyond the Stars. For other Corman goodness, i'd recommend Deathrace 2000, any of his Poe films with Vincent Price, and the one time he made a serious movie: the Intruder, where William Shatner plays a racist trying to stir up a small town against desegregation

I'm going against the grain here, but some things in Starcrash that I DO find pretty cool and that I LIKE .. . The weird and original DESIGNS of some of the space crafts, especially the CLAW-shaped ship of the villains. The multi-colored stars. The ice planet (which, interestingly, even prefigures “Hoth” in Empire Strikes Back). The monster mask that fires lasers out of its eyes. The touching friendship between Stella and the robot character “El” (particularly in the scene where he suspends her temperature to save her life). Marjo Gortner as “Acton”. Sure, he overacts grossly, but he does bring a ridiculously quirky charm to the character, and I always thought he had a really cool looking FACE too. Robert Tessier as “Thor”” (the real creepy looking bald guy). The actual volcano used as a location for the “third launch” (where Stella and the robot sidekick are ambushed by the cavemen). The very comely and scantily clad Ms. Munro and Nadia Cassini (the “Amazon Queen”), both of whom contribute an aesthetic of feminine beauty. So, yeah, I do like Starcrash just a little bit. So you all can HANG me!

This movie is super cringe, but harmless. 🤣 Trivia: Christopher Plummer was paid $10,000 per day. Most of his scenes as the Emperor of the Galaxy were shot in a single day. Christopher Plummer admitted that he did the film so he could visit Italy for free. In an interview, he said "Give me Rome any day. I'll do porno in Rome, as long as I can get to Rome. Getting to Rome was the greatest thing that happened in that for me." So Christopher Plummer got a sweet Roman vacation and at least $10,000 to spend.

The Emperor: You know, my son, I wouldn't be Emperor of the Galaxy if I didn't have some powers at my disposal. Imperial Battleship, halt the flow of time! Count Zarth Arn: By sunset, I'll be the new emperor! And I will be the master of the whole universe! Stella Star: So you see into the future. All these years you never told me. Think of all the trouble I might have avoided. Akton: You would have tried to change the future, which is against the law. So therefore I can tell you nothing. Elle: I only have logic and emotion circuits. No room for craziness. Elle: Time for a little robot chauvinism. The Emperor: For the space of three minutes, every molecule on this planet will be immobilized. But after the third minute, the green ray loses it's power. Time will flow once more and everything will explode. Simon: Three minutes are enough, father. Stella Star: What in the universe is that? Elric: My lord! Count Zarth Arn: What is it, Elric? Elric: [incredulously] A floating spaceship is about to crash into us. Count Zarth Arn: Sultaan! Destroy the floating spaceship approaching us. Elle: It's so nice to be turned on again. Stella Star: These are pre-programmed computers! They will run forever! Thor: [to Count Zarth Arn] Soon I will join you as your prince of darkness. Elle: Circuits don't fail me now! Elle: [fighting a giant statue] Watch out, you big broad! The Emperor: Our galaxy is split into two warring factions: our own and the one ruled by the evil Count Zarth Arn from the League of the Dark Worlds. The Emperor: Well, it's done. It's happened. The stars are clear. The planets shine. We've won. Oh. Some dark force, no doubt, will show it's face once more. The wheel will always turn; but for now it's calm. And for a little time, at least, we can rest. [credits roll] Elle: Now maybe is a good time to use your ancient system of prayer and hope it works for robots as well. Stella Star: [to Akton] I don't understand, you never die. Simon: Stella... Stella! And welcome home. Thor: [to Stella Star] You can drop the rifle ray. Now turn around. Akton: We just survived an attack of the most powerful weapon in the galaxy! 😊

Marjoe Gortner was in a great eco horror from 1976 called Food Of The Gods based on an HG Wells story. "Why does he have a southern accent?" Lot's of planets have a south! Fun fact: The film music for this movie actually got an academy award for the best music. But not for being in this movie, but also in the film "Out of Africa" from 1980. Composer John Barry was kinda bummed that Star Crash is such a bad movie, he thought he was composing for "the next star wars" so he repurposed the music for the later Robert Redford movie. Since film music has to be originally composed for the movie it appears in to be elligable for an oscar, the award should either be nul and void, or should be held by Star Crash.

WOW. Pretty sure this would have been utterly impossible for me to sit through. I gotta wonder if anyone involved in this production bothered to read the script from beginning to end and pointed out the things that didn't make sense, or if they fanned through the pages in a few seconds and said, "Yep, that's dialogue. While Starcrash was ultimately part of the science fiction craze that began with the release of Star Wars, the fact that Starcrash came out in 1978, just a year after Star Wars, supports the idea that it was most likely already in production before Star Wars was released. Thanks for your reaction/review! This is one of my favorite bad movies, so cheesy but also quite enjoyable on its own goofy terms. Marjoe Gortner (the curly-haired guy with vague powers who... turns into energy? after fighting the robots) was in a lot of 70s movies, but his real-life story was also pretty remarkable. He started out as a child evangelist, exploited and abused by his parents, then as an adult filmed a documentary exposing the fraud and exploitation of the evangelical "revivalist" industry. More info on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marjoe_Gortner Another "bad" movie that's actually a lot of fun is Killer Klowns from Outer Space.

Just a note before we get into this one! I looked after Luigi Cozzi and his wife for a week when he came to our Festival, to present this and "Hercules", as well as his (at the time) latest, "Blood on Melies´ Moon" (godawful) and "Fantasticozzi", a doc on his life and work. Something he pointed out a million times was his displeasure at John Barry winning the Oscar for the music to "Out Of Africa", when it is almost identical to Barry´s score here. And, you know, he´s not wrong.

It helps that I, along with pretty much every male in the UK had a crush on Caroline Munroe back then so could sit through anything with her in, Lol. Munroe and Joe Joe Spinell teamed up again in 1982s The Last Horror Film (AKA: Fanatic). They filmed a fair few scenes of that movie at the actual 1982 Cannes Film festival without permission, including one bit where Caroline is running through a hotel lobby in just a towel screaming as actual guests just stand around with looks on their faces like "what the hell is going on". It's very sleazy and quite nasty (nearly banned in the UK) so probably not one for a reaction, but definitely worth a look if you haven't seen it. The behind the scenes stories from the cast and crew are well worth looking into as well for fans of low budget/guerrilla film making.

Wow! I wanted to see what else Hasselhoff had done prior to this. He only has 3 credits. Immediately before this he made a film that has two titles for different markets I guess. One is Revenge of the Cheerleaders and the other is Caught With Their Pants Down. The best part is his character's name is Boner. Only 4 short years later he'd star in Knight Rider. Hollywood is a crazy place.

When L was smashed up by the cavemen (a/k/a hill people), the audience in the theater cheered. Yes, it came out in theaters here in '78 or '79. When he returned later, there was, shall we say, vocal dissatisfaction. Best line in cinematic history. "Imperial Battleship. Halt the flow of time." My favorite part is near the end, just when you think it can't get worse. The good guys launch torpedoes in space that are obviously not hermetically sealed, containing soldiers not wearing spacesuits. They smash through the plate glass windows of the Count's space station. Which does not cause explosive decompression. People say 'Plan Nine From Outer Space' is the worst movie ever. I think that's half right. It's the worst in black and white. 'Starcrash' is the worst in color. And I love them both.

I'm a big fan of Caroline Munro's which is why i love this daft film 🤣 Cheesy film recommendations - King Solomon's Mines (1985), At the Earth's Core (1976), Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1978) who's sequel Return of the Killer Tomatoes (1988) is even better.

If you ever have the opportunity to watch the 1972 documentary _Marjoe,_ go ahead and do it. It won the academy award for best documentary. It's about Marjoe Gortner, who starred in _Starcrash._ The name "Marjoe" is a combination of the names Mary and Joseph. Before he got into acting, Gortner was a preacher on the revival circuit, who scammed his gullible followers out of their money. The documentary is about him pulling one last big score before he quit preaching and went into acting.

I honestly thought the reason she didn't change into something other than her slave Leia outfit (even though that wouldn't be a thing till 1983 but she was a slave so I don't know what to think) was so that she'd look similar to the Amazons and they'd become friendly. Even that was too much for this "movie".
