B.S. Starcrash was made first they just didn't get a distribution deal until after that extra phony unoriginal StarWars got lucky. Tucker Carlson did a whole thing on it on account of his dad was the actor who played Actin and when the movie flopped he went on a bender and was caught fucking a neighbors dog so he killed himself.
1978: I remember seeing Starcrash in the theater when it was released. Without Caroline Munro, doing her space job in a bikini - and black Go-Go boots - no one would remember this film. We also have an Emperor who has the power to "halt the flow of time." That's a nice trick, assuming, once halted, there's a way to start things up again. Lucas tapped into a gold mine, and judging by the number of Star Wars ripoff films, and TV shows, we can tell exactly how big the original gold strike was. I remember thinking, on the way out of the theater, "Yeah, that was really awful, and I paid actual money to see it!" But decades later, I still remember this movie, because of the indelible impression made by Caroline Munro on my 19 year-old male brain.
No offense I didn't find Caroline Munro to be a good actress at all. And just because I'm male why would I find her a better actress than if I were female. No offense, you probably are a nice guy but you seem a bit slow and strange.
@@chamboyette853 No offense taken. I didn't say she was a good actress. I agree with you on that. I said she made an impression. It was the look. I think a better look than Jane Fonda in Barbarella or Dorothy Stratten in Galaxina. But of course, these are matters of taste - and a ridiculous topic to argue about. And as for being strange - we all know people are strange. Jim Morrison told us that in the 1960s.
@@chamboyette853, After seeing Caroline Munro as Naomi in The Spy Who Loved Me, I checked out Starcrash. Her brief appearance there piqued my interest. She was nowhere as compelling as Stella Star. Maybe her short role in the 007 flick was a right decision by the Bond producers. She is good in small doses.
It's actually a good point. A lot people, even the cast and crew, thought Star Wars would be this ridiculous looking movie with corny dialogue and be forgotten in a month. I mean, if you watch some of the behind-the-scenes footage where the special fx and sounds are not added it really does look like a cheap sci-fi flick.
Disney made a Star Wars type movie in 1979 called "The Black Hole" that was better than most Star Wars Movies. The lead actor was Anthony Perkins aka Norman Bates.
Considering how many times I came up with my own version (headcanon, rewrites) after I watched a bad movie or show (Jurassic World, Star Wars sequels, Fantastic Beasts, Game of Thones S8, some Marvel), I can totally imagine that Lucas read the script of this movie and thought he could do a better one. 😆
@@myrithoros2540 um no you say you're being sarcastic when being sarcastic you ignorant tool your comment came off as a hipster movie critic who hates everything
Star Wars was very ahead of its time in the special effects department, that's for sure, and you know, George Lucas just lucked out with the actors he used, because they all did a fantastic job, not just individually, but as a team.
2001 a Space Odyssey came almost an entire decade before Star Wars. THAT is the movie that had TRULY pioneered what has become the modern science fiction movie.
For the record, some OTHER well made sci fi movies which predate Star Wars, or were contemporary to it, are .. . Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) Logan’s Run (1976) Marooned (1970) Silent Running (1972) This Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) Fantastic Planet (1973) Earth Vrs. The Flying Saucers (1956) This Island Earth (1956) Space 1999 (television show 1975) 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968)
I read a Plummer interview some time ago, and he stated that he didn't mind doing Starcrash. "I got a free trip to Italy". It's a fun movie. Sure, it's low budget, but wow, dig that lite-brite outer space! That was created by taking black crepe paper and punching holes in it and have the colored lights hovering over it! Say what you want about the effects, but, that's dedication folks. Spinell is great as the hammy "Count Zarth Arn" and what more can be said about Caroline Munro, but ooo-la-la. Still, too bad she couldn't do her lines for the voice recording, although I do like Candy Clark.
Star Wars was totally different for one it had a solid story line and well written, also great effects not grownups playing with toys in front of a camera as that is what it looked like
Concerning this big "rip off" allegation. Why don't we be FAIR about this and cite some of the things that beloved big-britched high and mighty Star Wars did some pinching of it's OWN from, aye? Like namely from The Hidden Fortress, Dune, Arthurian mythology, and Vaughn Bode's Cobalt 60?
@@Josedinho_- forget rough one I’m talking about the original true Star Wars not Woke Wars It had a good storyline, the new Star Wars 🤣🤦♂️, completely messed up, what happens when far lefties take charge
I remember reading in Space magazine about how the fx artists for Star Crash used the sprues from the model kits as well as the parts to decorate their spaceships. You can see it on the opening shot. I remember buying a ticket to see this movie just to be inspired by how cheaply a movie can be made. LOL
It's called Kitbashing and they did it in star wars too if you've watched the bts documentaries. Actually I think most people did it since it's such an easy thing to do.
@@isthatbraised Absolutely. And I think you might agree that in Star Wars it was done much more sparingly and tastefully. For example, I think if you look at the bottom corner of the head of the cannon tower from the Death Star trench, you might see a kit sprue there among the model parts. Model parts themselves were used much more extensively, but always done thoughtfully and with a sense of purpose. Yes, I know about kitbashing. I read a lot of articles on model making and effects and built a few spaceships of my own for a short film that I was working on... another blatant Star Wars rip-off.
Bad movies like this were the norm for science fiction films in the 1970's. That just proves how far ahead Star Wars was at the time and how much of a genius George Lucas is.
Lucas may have had a few ideas, but no way was he a genius, it was people around him saved his bacon: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GFMyMxMYDNk.html Remember the prequels?? Thats what happens when Lucas had no one to disagree with his bad decisions.
Indeed, I particularly enjoyed the choice to have the girl wear high heeled boots to explore a snow covered mountain. It's his dedication to logic and realism that sets this movie apart.
@@FoxUnitNell I'm well aware of that, he's just an incredibly irritating character who was put in for bad comic relief. (And who was ripped off one of the beggars in Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress".)
My family and I watched the MST3K version (the best thing to have ever happened to this film) and I swear, the torpedo soldiers nearly broke us. We were flabbergasted by what we were seeing. We had no coherent words.
Remember in The Last Jedi when Rose’s sister was in an open bomb drop bay with no suit just breathing the cool space air? Rian Johnson must have loved that human missile scene through the windows in Star Crash.
air and gravity exist in star wars space. have you not seen an x wing? or their loading docks? also I think fire exists in space too. have you ever seen lasers that have a colored beam? nope. don't you just love fiction?

The actor with the curly blonde hair was a evangelist preacher when he was a young boy. He also played a perverted national guard soldier in the 1970s movie earthquake.
Check out "Black Hole" (1979) that was a Disney Production. It starred Anthony Perkins of Norman Bates fame. It's special effects rivaled Star Wars and it's story was better than all the Star Wars movie other than Original Trilogy. It is an all time underrated movie.
Star wars episode one the phantom menace (gui gon jim to jar jar binks) Qui gon: "the ability to speak does not make you intelligent, now get out of here." Jar Jar: "No! No! Me-sa stay! Me-sa called Jar Jar binks. Me-sa ya humble servant." *saw that reference homie. #TopNotch
I was only 8 when watch this movie at a theatre. At that age, everything seems to be fun without ever thinking of the silly plot and logic. Btw, great review, really bring back the memory watching it with my parents...
I remember the onslaught of bad sci-fi flicks that hit the cinemas right after Star Wars came out..and I saw all of them!!! Check out these gems...." Battle Beyond The Stars", "Laser Blast", and "Message From Space". SO CHEESY BUT STILL LOVABLE!
"Black Hole" (1979) Walt Disney Production was a great movie! It get's overlooked simply because it's a space movie that came out around same time as Star Wars so people assume it was a Star Wars cash grab but it's actually a great movie.
I'm glad the jailers allowed Stella to wear her "work clothes". Maybe that's where George Lucas got the idea for "Slave Leia". Then again, maybe he just wanted to commit Carrie Fisher in a bikini to film... which we should all be thankful for.
I'm going against the grain here, but some things in Starcrash that I DO find pretty cool and that I LIKE .. . The weird and original DESIGNS of some of the space crafts, especially the CLAW-shaped ship of the villains. The multi-colored stars. The ice planet (which, interestingly, even prefigures “Hoth” in Empire Strikes Back). The monster mask that fires lasers out of its eyes. The touching friendship between the robot character “El” and Stella (particularly in the scene where he suspends her temperature to save her life). Marjo Gortner as “Acton”. Sure, he overacts grossly, but he does bring a ridiculously quirky charm to the character, and I always thought he had a really cool looking FACE too. Robert Tessier as “Thor”” (the real creepy looking bald guy). The actual volcano used as a location for the “third launch”. The very comely and scantily clad Ms. Munro and Nadia Cassini (the “Amazon Queen”), both of whom contribute an aesthetic of feminine beauty. So, yeah, I do like Starcrash just a little bit. So you all can HANG me!
THAT is something that I actually LIKE in THIS flick myself. I think they're a lot cooler looking than those bland yellowy-white stars in every other space flick, including big-britched high'n mighty Star Wars.
It amazing to see how Star Wars, Ep. 4 was released in 1977 and continues to attract new generations of fans. It was a 'game changer' for the Sci-fi genre.
Indeed, Star Wars had great vision. In terms of aesthetics and world building everything felt right and consistent. A lot of things in Star Wars became iconic like for example its wipe fade transition, what other movie can pull it off better than Star Wars now? It basically became a part of the brand that we can easily recognise. The only downside was the directing/writing imo, it's a shame because Star Wars has a vast source of collection from the legends of the Old Republic to other different eras, lots of interesting characters that could have made it to the big screen. Star Wars combines the best of both world, realism and sci-fi imo. It's really immersive and makes me feel like intergalactic space travel exploration may be possible in the far future.
I saw this during a bad movie festival in Prague. It was absolutely fucking hilarious. The experience was further elevated by having two ppl do a live dub into Czech that was either a fairly precise recreation of one that circulated on old pirated copies or at the very least captured the tone and the vibe of those bad bootleg dubs from early 90s extremely well. 10/10, would recommend, I think we were all half-delirious from laughter when it ended.
This was my first WMWM video, and now I can't get enough of this channel. I saw the title and was like what the hell? Then quickly saw what he was doing! Hahaha. Love the channel!!!
Stormtrooper: can’t shoot something directly in front of them This movie: shoots so accurately that time slows down and everything explodes Definitely not Star Wars
Yeah Memeboi that's funny and all but... Stormtroopers were ordered to not kill. The whole deal with Stormtrooper accuracy came from retards that didn't pay attention to the first movie.
@@brilliantshadows3153 that only excuses that movie. They are jokes in every single movie. Except rogue one, clone wars tv series and solo. If the stormtroopers were really actually capable, all star wars main characters except the jedi would be dead because of the stupid stuff they do.
This is a perfect illustration of how far ahead of the times star wars was in terms of visual effects. Not just special effects. But costumes and crap. My god. Every other space movie of the time just completely sucks. But somehow star wars went above and beyond the standards of the time. A truly magnificent feat.
2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien ,Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Silent Running, Solaris are movies from the same time period with great space efects.

Star Wars wasn't really so ground-breaking VISUALLY. 2001 A Space Odyssey came nearly an entire decade before Star Wars, .. . THAT was the movie that pioneered THOSE KIND of visuals

I don’t know which came first, but I do know the Star Wars main theme March is actually the song “Born Free’. All you need to do is, flip over the sheet music and it doesn’t matter which sheet music to play, just flip it. Star Wars is Born Free and Born Free becomes Star Wars, but I still enjoy them both.
Oohh man.. you just made my late night before falling asleep, especially the last bit of it made me lmao, felt like I somehow missed Starcrash in my childhood 😅

So the writers and director snorted $3,999,980 worth of coke and then dropped a 20-bomb at the special effects department and then gathered up a bunch of homeless people to play the parts for free Cup 'o Noodles.
If George Lucas would have bowed down to Hollywood, this is what Star Wars would have turned out to be... Thank God he had the courage and will to fight against them!
@@Michael45007 Star Wars 4 is actually a New Hope that came out in the 70s as the first film. The Phantom Menace was the fourth movie to come out but was the first episode of the Saga. I don't think you've ever watched or seen the making of the Star Wars films, the original 3, and I don't think you've ever seen an interview or biography of Lucas. He had control of making the first 3 films! He fought against Hollywood and the status quo! He wasn't just producing it, he originally started to direct it as well, but when there was just too much to do, he hired a director that would follow his visions! Lucas kept all of the scripts under lock and key. Even the cast didn't know most the lines until right before they were doing that scene! So don't sit there and say he wasn't given creative control until Phantom Menace. He invented Start Wars, he and his crew invented THX and Pixar! Please learn your history first!
I love how much gravitas Christopher Plummer managed to put into his lines. He knew he wasnt dealing with A-list material, yet he sounds like he's reciting Hamlet.
The scene with the giant robot reminds me of a scene in Jason and The Argonauts! The actor who played Thor should have played The Valture in Spiderman!
I can't share this point of view. As a kid, I watched Starcrash in a theater. The bleeding from my ears and my eyes finally stopped. However : I am sure I suffered no brain damage. Any film is better, even one involving a clumsy-walking-goofy-talking amphibian.
If StarCrash can prove story and artboards truly are pre-StarWars production , , , that WOULD really be something , , , and a new low for GEORGE LUCAS aside from "Jar Jar Binks" of course , , , ,
The robot sound as Bender from Futurama ... The curly guy really looks like The Greatest American Hero. And I can see a couple of reasons why the emperor thought she was the best pilot or whatever in the galaxy ...
Actually, the screenwriter of Star Crash was told to read the novelization of Star Wars because the film wasn't released in Italy yet. So everything's off kilter because the writer had no physical frame of reference for what he was reading and what he was reading was translated from English into Italian!! Imagine reading R2D2, the force, light speed, Jedi, light saber and Wookie for the first time and being described these things on paper from a different language no less?!?! I mean, he saw there was a Princess Leia and assumed her father was a King!! He figured The Force was some kind of magic! And just look at his robots compared to R2 & 3PO? He really had no idea what he was reading or writing about. They saw the crawl written out on the first page but had no idea which direction it "crawled" on screen because he never saw one before!! Even the stuff Lucas drew inspiration from were foreign to him. So, this is why everything is the way it is in Star Crash. An Italian filmmaker wanted to make a cheap knock off of a revolutionary sci-fi, American box office smash that he didn't see, only read about.
Its a Spaghetti space film, minus the good actors, good director, and good writing. I did hear though that the pop corn was good. They use real butter in Italy.
I remember hearing that -- there was a Chinese similar one as well -- except that it was a comic book based on... someone's description? Something like that.
Starcrash was not something an italian filmmaker wanted to make. It was something producers and the film company wanted the filmmaker to make. Tje filmmaker wanted to make a serious "hard" sci fi movie, but nobody had any interest in financing it. Also, such new US genres killed the commercial movie industry as the italians could not really afford to make them. They did well with western and crime movies but sci fi and fantasy was really out of their range. The filmmakers would have preferred continuing to do western and crime movies, so making Rambo knockoffs and space opera was something they never really wanted to do.
