Older Bethesda games used to just refer to your character by the/them because they didn't want to make alternate scripts based on your character's gender. The intention in Starfield is to add more immersion so that the NPCs will address your character properly based on what you made. Reactionaries are making a big deal over nothing

The contrast between "Starfield has a pronoun toggle" and "Zenimax held a trans woman's healthcare hostage over her not suing them for disrimination after she was outed and harassed at work" is staggering. His meltdown over realising that he was attracted to a trans woman is hilarious but also mildly unsettling to me as a trans woman. Because it's unfortunately a scary part of reality we run the risk of every single day, especially if we don't fully pass. The speed at which his horniness turned to aggression shows that if a man approaches us and starts catcalling us, and then sees moments later that we have an adams apple, he will think "fuck, am I gay?", which would translate to anger, and could even turn into assault. If they could tell, then there's no reason to be worried about being attracted to a "wrong person". But it's like with homophobia, they can't tell whether the guys they are friends with might be secretly gay (and god forbid be into them) so they feel like they should tell everyone about how homophobic they are to make themselves as unattractive as possible to queer people. Oddly, it seems like what really got him going was his misunderstanding over a character being a female 'clone' of another male character. He confusingly interprets this character as being trans. People complain about games being "too political", then turn around and play Call of Duty, a WAR GAME that always, without exception, has a GEOPOLITICAL PLOTLINE about Russia/China/South America starting World War 3 or some shit lmao
They will see "america good" and "capitalism good" in a game and assume it aligns with their views and is thus not political. But half the time games like bioshock and fallout are criticising these ideas and it will go completely over their head. They will see a robot in fallout that will assume you're communist and kill you if you pick any line other than "fuck off". And after seeing this parody of the red scare the game is encouraging players to laugh at because of how stupid it is and go "so true fallout i hate communism too."

It's a small thing but I'm kinda just happy to see that Starfield and BG3, what will likely end up as the two biggest RPGs of the year, are trans-inclusive in their character creation. As the old saying goes "go woke, make a billion dollars"

What’s funny to me about the collective meltdown of Starfield having pronouns is that one guy who said he’d “go back to Skyrim” was apparently not aware that Elder Scrolls has covered LGBTQ material since at least Morrowind, maybe longer. There’s a trans character named Alchemy and her story apparently won a GLAAD award in 2019!
Also, Skyrim has same-sex marriage. Hell, you can be a Khajit marrying an Argonian and no one will bat an eye. You can be a vampire marrying a werewolf in a lesbian relationship. That's why I love this game and other RPGs that gave me this kind of immersion
Fallout 3 also already had an unambiguous lesbian ghoul couple in Underworld and the Relic Hunter Sydney is also a lesbian (if you betray her to steal the independence document, she will hunt you down with her girlfriend in a random encounter, and I think the NPC says she's her girlfriend). This is 2008. Fallout 3 portrayed it as just normal.

I myself use strictly they/them pronouns, and literally nothing can compare to the utter joy I felt when I realized I could make my character just like me. A game made by a company that's made two of my favorite games (Oblivion and Skyrim ofc) ever, the BIGGEST GAME OF THE YEAR - and it INCLUDES ME? I honestly hadn't thought that would come any time soon. I squealed over it, I've told multiple family members about the pronoun button. That constant joy whenever I look at my character and know they're not getting misgendered (as I've made enby characters in TES games before but been unable to give them correct pronouns)... it's really special. Some annoying backwards-thinking white guy isn't gonna take that away from me. I really, really hope this inspires other big studios to follow along :)

Honestly it's more common than you'd think. I've seen people complain about Dishonored 2 having a female black character to drive you to your missions. Just ignoring that, in that game, you can link people together so they die from the same action, summon a clone of yourself to distract enemies, and freaking stop time itself. There seem to be a vocal minority who think realism means they don't have to deal with minorities or everyone is a self interested bastard, but give a pass to all sorts of wild magic/ technomagic. Almost like the point is to impose their views on other people.

@MrSiloterio I had been wanting to reply somehow. I found I care so little about this subject matter that the only reply I can muster is to say I do not care. To sum up this situation, manbaby goes viral whining about pronoun variety for characters being boring and shattering his escapism wants. It makes me want to stick with analog tabletop games that force me to own up to playing solitaire, learning game design appreciation, or actually get local friends. Nothing is cold shower reality like trying to solo play a game like Diplomacy. Great, I just am now having my gamer designer side taking that as a game design challenge and making me hold my own beer.

Removing genders in exchange for body types, voice types along with cringe exposition and putting politics in videogames which no one asked for... tell me anything positive because I don't see it in fact may say that gaming has been going downhill since dlc gaming and battle passes have changed gaming for the worst as well. It's really funny in a sad way. I'm a straight guy and was recently watching the episode of Strange New Worlds with a trans actor. I thought she was amazing and caught some feelings for her. My friend pointed out the actor was trans and I laughed and said that I thought she was super hot! That's because I'm very comfortable with my sexuality. This guy really seems to have issues and fights his feelings with hate and anger.

I watched Season 1 for the first time recently, and it's pretty clear FROM EPISODE 1 that he's an awful person. He lasers a whole plane and destroys it. Idk how people thought he was meant to be a good person. And season one goes on to COMPOUND how much of a dickbag he is. He does SO MUCH awful shit. And I haven't even gotten to season 2 and 3 yet.
Giving people an understanding of what hormones do would already do so much groundwork to prevent people ending up like this. A trans woman's tits are not fake, they are a result of a body receiving estrogen. Trans women grew tits the same way I did as a teenager, their body has had access to sufficient levels of estrogen to trigger that. When people think hormones doing what hormones are doing is "faking", I immediately write them off as too dumb to talk to.
Yeah I think people conflate "artificially induced" with "artificial". Probably because a lot of them don't really care, and will grasp at any kind of straw in order to cling onto their hatred.
IIRC a fair number of transwomen do get implants however, simply because they're often starting their development later and after the body has already gone through a lot of changes based on male puberty. But I get your point. There's also just all the uncommon, but quite natural, ways that human biology diverges from a gender binary.

The biting irony with feeling that the inclusion of pronouns makes him feel excluded, is that for anyone for whom pronouns are important, not having that choice will make them remind them of the prejudice and scorn of the real world while they were just trying to escape. Whereas for him... he just has to choose the pronouns that align with him and nothing about his experience would be impacted.

I’m always very suspicious of people that care so much what other people are doing even when it has exactly 0% effect to their lives. I didn’t even notice this when I made my Starfield character lol. Christ. It’s often the same people who are obsessed with their personal freedom, but apparently only their own. I won’t even dig into the fact that it seems pretty obvious this guy in particular is just going crazy in the hopes people will watch his bs videos, this isn’t real, it’s a complete performance and not a very convincing one. It’s ironic that he wants to play a game (that he himself says is) about exploring space and meeting people, yet the moment he is confronted by the idea that people in a different world may be different from him, he freaks out.
