Hey Fextra, thanks for the video. One thing that I think you got wrong is the thing about there being no cover system. I’m pretty sure that you can peep and shoot over cover and around corners in first person. It’s like Far Cry. I consider that a cover system, and I like it better than games like Mass Effect and Gears.

I have 136 hours on starfield. I played on console shortly after launch and put the game down because life took away time from gaming. I just picked it up again recently on pc and have been loving it. The rev8 fixes almost all the issues of plopping down on a random planet and having to run for ages to get anywhere, while also being really cheap and fun to drive. In my opinion it fixed all the issues I have with planetary exploration. I still haven’t finished the main story and instead opted for trying all aspects of the game. Outposts, crafting, trade, contraband, combat, companions, you name it I’ve done it and I’ve enjoyed pretty much all of it. Throughout the game the story in the main and faction quests threw me for some “no way” and “holy crap” moments which I feel like are sometimes hard to come by in games nowadays. There are moments where you are left with hard decisions which really make you wonder about what could have been if you went the other way. The stories are something special. What’s even better is that there is dlc coming that will further the compelling stories. Given what I’ve already seen so far, I am convinced shattered space will be exceptional as well. I found the combat to be fun with unique weapons and interesting abilities and mechanics. I definitely wouldn’t say it was something I wanted to get over with. The graphics on console are good for the performance of those systems, but stepping up to pc things take a gigantic leap. The game looks absolutely stunning I really have no clue how anyone could say the graphics in this game are bad. I really don’t understand the poor ratings of this game. To me they come off as short sighted with criticisms that don’t have anything to do with the core game itself, such as the loading screens. Everyone I talk to who wrote off starfield either didn’t play it at all or didn’t put enough time into it to see how multifaceted it was or experience any of the great stories to their fullest. That’s not to say starfield doesn’t have problems because it certainly does. It’s just that those problems don’t take away from all the great things this game offers.

The games ability to run has been improved leaps and bounds, it was pretty bad on release. The num lock key for autorun is what makes playing on PC superior.

yah for sure, tough choice, I played BG3 that last 2-3 weeks every spare moment 160 hour playthrough just beat couple days ago - wanted to be done before Starfield came out - although I know i'll be playing it again, and again as the years go by. If you want a opinion..... This is my first Bethesda RPG. I bounced off Skyrim after a handful of hours many times because Dragon Age is the only fantasy series that can hook me. I was hoping Starfield would help ease me into Bethesda games since I prefer sci-fi games, and it absolutely has. It took me about 12-15 hours to warm up to the game and get a loop going, but now I’m loving it.

Im thus far a little over 1,400 hours in and I'd say patience is a requirement for this one. For me personally, I love it. The story didn't get good until the temples and didn't get great until "A High Price to Pay" plus a lot of the fun is locked behind perks and space caps. So I don't blame anyone for not hanging in there but if you can this is the best game of the past 8 years.

I am not that chocked when it's about a Bethesda game, skyrim had abysmal story, characters, combat yet I put ungodly amount of hours in it and found the game absolutly great, and the game was an enormous success worldwide, Bethesda is one of the rare studio that when they do things badly they do them very badly and when they do things good they do it very good . If you played 100 hours of a game that means you must like it or you are a masochist, the fact that most reviewers played 100 hours plus on it means the game is probably all kind of addictive even with it's flaws.

It's somewhat enjoyable... Seems a little "on rails" and it's a lot of fetch quests where I'm just chasing the blue icon. You can't kill any main characters such as the Crimson Fleet leadership... Or any named characters on The Key, they just lay down until you load out. Dialogue doesn't seem to matter and I just find myself clicking through the first option. Guards/security are essentially psychic and will also immediately start shooting you for accidently stealing a plate.

Exploration isn't just going around planets and finding wildlife. Exploration is finding secret stories by reading notes and journals, small hidden quests or activities, realizing how events in the galaxy are connected or referencing each other etc. To explore the universe is both to visit new planets and check out whats there, and to discover the lore behind the many factions, etc

No disclaimers referring to Fextralife's possible collaboration with BGS (if any)? If not, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact this was rated a whopping 9.4 which is a near perfect game. How is this rating even possible given such lack luster combat as stated in your review? In your own words 'something you wanted to get done with and not what you're looking forward to'. This is an RPG with a significant focus on questing that involves combat - how does this statement be reflected as a 9? Also Pricepoint being rated a 10 after saying 'it feels justified' is just another example that doesn't reflect the rating. I've been following Fextralife closely the past years - mostly with FromSoftware's titles and more recently BG3, and would be nice to hear from a viewer perspective about any potential biases involved in such a review. Thanks for all the hard work and keep up the great content!
@Fextralife
@Fextralife Год назад
We have had zero monetary relationship with Bethesda for this title (or any other title in years). The last Bethesda game I reviewed was Redfall which I gave a 5.9. I understand that people are having trouble reconciling the score with what they think is more important (usually combat). For me, these games are about exploration and questing, and that experience was extremely fun, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I made it all the way to NG+ and do not feel like stopping, meaning I cannot give gameplay a bad score or I'm being dishonest that I actually like it. There seems to be wide swings in scores among outlets, so I think for this game the like / dislike is going to be a lot more personal (such as IGN US giving it a 7 and IGN Japan giving it a 10)

Thanks for making this but the game seems extremely mid. I'm surprised you gave the gameplay a 9.0 since you didn't like the combat, the ship fights, or the UI. I love how ppl who played no more than 5 hours of the game, or those who didn't even play the game at all and are judging the quality of the title solely from looking at gameplay footage are trashing it right off the bat. Totally agreed: I've read several reviews myself and I can't figure out how this game could even reach a 9 😂 Basically what I've read is: - no survival mode so no complex mechanic and even no basic... why you should build your house here and there or even bothering having a bed if there is no real need to have it or just why having a bed if the game doesn't ask you to sleep? - No free exploration in space: maybe this was expected but for sure not cool for people playing space games in 2023. Click on planets and you're teleported in the orbit: game choice close to the one made by the wonderful mass effect too but it was 2006 and ME never defined itself as free roaming and was designed to be quests driven only. Beth's rpgs are free roaming by definition and SF was declared too as the like. Letting a modern player of no man sky and elite dangerous teleport to an orbit in 2023 just to explore orbit is underwhelming at minimum. Definitely not free roaming in space. Furthermore why investing time customizing your ship if it's just a matter of teleporting here and there? A review says: I'd like to have a reason to upgrade my ship but this game doesn't give one. If it's true to me is another not 9.4 feature. - Repetitive and dull quests that you may like indeed but never love. Do not know if it's true but again it doesn't seem a comment for a 9.4 game. I must say guys: when you play Horizon Zero Dawn a totally different game for sure yeah but you literally may fall in love even with secondary quests chains... you have the feel to really help those poeple. From what I've read it seems SF never gives something like that or even the chills. - The worst thing I've read is that the game world has small or zero impacts depending on your actions and choice. That's not new: it happened on old Beth's rpgs too but now we are in 2023 and modders for free are doing that: I'm playing the mod Sim Settlements 2 for Fallout4 and you can literally see the game world evolving depending on your actions. I would've expected that in a AAA 2023 game or at least giving some illusion of that... and btw even if it was 2006 the ME world indeed evolves with you. - ...then we have vehicles: in 2330 we reached space and we don't even have a rover to move on planets? Rovers was there since moon exploration in 1969 if I'm not wrong. So not saying the game is bad: just reporting what I've read and the reasons for which I can't understand a 9.4. Maybe all those guys with 70-75 are wrong I do not know: for sure to me just lacking the survival mode ignoring the success stories on new vegas, fallout 4 and skyrim - thanks community - it's an incredible flaw, definitely a bad choice limiting a lot of any generic game mechanics and for sure I'm not playing the game till at least that mode is there. The good news is that I'm a fan of Beth's games so if this game really is a 9.4 I'll be happy because we'll see it in some months at the GOTY awards... but to be honest I believe more in patches and communities 😁 as of now as fan of space games and fan of Beth's games... well I'll continue to play Sim Settlements 2 😂

Scores felt pretty out of sync with the actual review. "Just wanted to get the combat over with" = 9/10 Gameplay "Way to many subsystems to learn" = 9/10 Design & Visual "Took about 30 hours to get going" = 10/10 Replayability Overall it was a great review, but those scores got me scratching my head a little.
@Fextralife
@Fextralife Год назад
I put the complaints because I wanted people who specifically care about those things to note them, however for me they weren’t the most important. Gameplay became about exploration, dialogues and questing. Subsystems I eventually learned. The hours to get going are because I was trying to do it all and focusing on the story was the key. as I replay now (I’m on ng plus) I don’t have any issues

Highly disagree about the minimap. Bethesda games do not and shout not have minimaps on the HUD. They're distracting and, more often than not, games that have them tend to be designed for you to navigate using it, rather than making a well designed world that's fun to just experience.

So, from what I gather - Lackluster combat - Ship combat is just okay - UX/UI leave a lot to be desired (like a mini map?!) - Lots of glitchy bugs, but nothing game-breaking Yeah. I'll pass. I don’t feel the summary matched the rest of the review. In one you say you dreaded having to go in to combat and the ship combat is clunky, and in the other you rated the gameplay 9.0. Anyway, my expectations have certainly been lowered over the past few hours, but I’m still looking forward to giving it a shot.

Your summary and score don't really fit with all the criticisms you made during the video. Interestingly this has resulted in me not wanting to play the game despite it ending up getting a pretty high score.
@Fextralife
@Fextralife Год назад
This is why the written part is more important than the score. When we rate things, we have to consider many aspects, and its very likely you only care about a few specific ones. For example, the questing is great! but the combat is not. If you're looking for questing, you'll be happy. If you want deep combat you will not.

So this sounds like an admirable open world grabbag of activities. It also sounds like it doesn't actually excel at anything and I would enjoy myself more splitting my time between games that specialize. For instance Baldurs Gate 3 for quests and role-playing, the new Armor Core for ship combat, and maybe Cyberpunk 2077 for character combat. Maybe if I couldn't afford the three above in total I would be better with Starfield.

I have the game as an 8.5 out of 10. I think Fextra was very generous with the grading criteria. The land exploration and combat is fun, with a ton to do. Space combat and exploration is super underwhelming, which brings the game down a point. The rest is a very familiar Bethesda experience/feel. Good but not great characters and storyline, but nothing innovative or particularly new. Solid 8.5, worth a buy but not a must buy.

Feeling a bit like that 9.4 rating is very high considering the amount of negatives you mentioned that were pretty critical, especially saying combat is lacking, I think you even said it was dull and left you wanting it to be over... that’s not good at all. Kinda thinking the pressure of the hype and giving it a higher rating so not to piss off the Bethesda diehard fans that have been waiting 10 years for it has come into effect here for me, just my interpretation of your review. As always a great and honest review... just the score I’m questioning that’s all.

@Fextralife Год назад
I understand how you may think that but I never shy from harsh scores when they are warranted. The last Bethesda game I covered was redfall and it got a 5.9. In this case, I personally didn't love the combat, but I did love the exploration and questing. Because the game provides so much of it, it became not just what I focused on but what I did with my hours, and it was incredibly fun. For this reason, the score can't be low: I had fun! -- but I did mention what I did not like so that people that are looking for the combat can be warned that my score is affected by my predilection for questing.

Fantastic graphics? Should we all revisit new atlantis? Should we even put it side to side with any game released this year? Come on, you know its a lie, i cant believe you said that. Graphics are close to good, but fantastic? Lol Maybe vs Fallout 3, then yes they are fabtastic. But we are talking about this year and generation, 2023. Quite biased, really disappointed. The game is an 8 out of 10. Its not bad. But 8 years, over 220 million and over 500 developers, to bring us load screens upon loqd screens, copy paste stations, and worse exploration, space traveling and precedural generated plantents and life than No mans sky? That's really embarrassing. They just take advantage of the nostalgia and the thirst for a new game of the fallout fans. BGS shoulf have pushed the genre forward with this game, like BG3 did and defined rpgs forever.
