I just reckon it's a fast response/ patrol ship. Oberth is very quick for its day with those nacelles. Explains the heavy armament and lack of living space

I'm mixing metaphors for arc descriptions, mixing SFB & Squadron Strike terminology. Each color represents a 30 degree arc. Yellow is centerline plus/minus 15 degrees, +1 hex up and down every 4 hexes forward. Blue is the next 30 degrees above or below ship centerline. Green is the next 30 degrees above blue, and purple is essentially straight up or down plus/minus the remaining 15 degrees. Red arc cone expands +1 hex away from centerline every 4 levels of altitude difference. Search "Squadron Strike Range Angle Lookup Table" to see it in chart form.

TMP Nova == instant like. ^^ I'd roll the nacelles 90 degrees and mount the struts to the edge of the secondary hull, preferably a bit further aft. Then it would be a major winner. Time for Blender I guess. 😁

these strike me as something that is used in wings, like sending 5 or so to deal with incursions like Romulans edging in from the Neutral Zone, like a PT boat. the underslung cargo bay is practical for loading/unloading cargo (torpedoes and the like) while the read dorsal facing would be used for ingress/egress of things like evac shuttles or troop movement. She's not a destroyer, she's a corvette. It can work as a scout, but to me, that's not its only usage by far.
@jtjames79
@jtjames79 8 месяцев назад
It's like a PT boat had a love child with a Toyota Helix. The back deck is like a pickup bed, it's for whatever you want it to be for. Probably with environmental shield coverage. She actually looks like she was made for repair and towing. Those phaser banks could be optimized for welding and scrapping. Not to say they wouldn't be good in a fight. I think those doors are direct access to the engine room and warp core. For jump starting or powering a Starship it's been tasked to rescue. That's why the warpedness cells are sideways so they can tow up to two additional starships above and below. But just because it can tow another ship doesn't necessarily mean you want it to do that. If it can power the other ships warp systems then then both can travel under their own steam in formation. I see it as a jack of all trades ship that is meant to punch above its weight class for very short amounts of time, to fill tactical gaps and get things back up and running. At least that's how I see it.

Memory beta says "The Strider-class was a series of United Earth scout starships in Earth Starfleet service around the time of the 22nd century. During the latter half of the 2150s decade, ships of the Strider-class were among those which saw action against the Romulan Star Navy in the Earth-Romulan War. (ST video game: Legacy)"

I think the one thing that bugs me about it is the nacelles being on their sides. Maybe it would look better if they were rotated 90 degrees? Also, something that small should have landing legs, or be capable of water landings. Nice little design otherwise aside from the Impulse Engine placement.

Good overall concept, just needs a little bit of scaling with the shuttle bays, a new bridge module and a few less phaser emplacements on the underside. She would make an excellent general purpose Patrol Corvette/Escort/Hunter, intended for short Border patrols, system policing monitors and merchant escort duties. Basically it would be intended for anything that requires more speed and firepower than an Oberth, but doesn't require as much crew or firepower as a frigate class like a Miranda. Small, cheap, enough guns to hold its own against pirates and border skirmishes.
@raabaddler5802
@raabaddler5802 8 месяцев назад
that deck cut out on the shuttle bay might be a clip in cargo bay, or maybe it doesn't store the shuttles in a hanger just lash them to the hull and eva to the shuttles or under a environmental shield?? or perhaps it could serve as a 1st draft of the Texas Class from lower decks?
@jtjames79
@jtjames79 8 месяцев назад
I was just punking the exact same thing about environmental shields. I think those big doors are actually accessed directly to the warp core and engine room. It's not a bug. It's a feature, from when you need to supply something with a lot of power. Kind of reminds me of a Toyota Helix. It's a Corvette size technical. Same thing with the forward landing pads. We have also seen phasers used as tools as well as weapons. Those turret balls could be optimized for welding and scrapping. Not to say they ain't good in a fight but not the reason they were put there in the first place. I like to imagine the sideways warp cells are that way because it's designed to tow other starships, possibly two at a time above and below. I'd like to imagine it's the sort of ship that operates with a small crew of a couple of dozen at most. Also like to imagine that big staging deck at the back could be a modular cargo system. Or any other purpose you needed like extra living quarters for personnel transfer. I get the feeling of a workhorse that's meant to plug holes wherever they happen to be whenever they happen to be. It's expected to punch above its weight class, at least for a very short periods of time.

That or ….. its a “truck bed” which means their can be any sort of other “things” that can be slotted in their…. Which makes this a multi mission vessel…. Which gels with my opinion on the oberth class , where its lower structure is irrelevant to space flight and can be removed and replaced with any sort of other structure you can think of …. This slot is like the cargo bay of the NASA shuttle

It's an interesting design I'll give it that. I will agree with Sam that the bridge piece is a disappointment with it just being a Connie Refit bridge. I will also agree with him about the window sizing. They are WAY off in scale for that ship. I agree with the Captain that it's got a science ship vibe...not only because of the nacelles but that landing pad deal at the aft of the ship. This was a bit of a lazy designed ship in my opinion. I think the nacelles should be turned so they're the same way as on the Oberth class. Those yellow things are definitely RCS thrusters. I agree with the Captain get rid of that impulse deck and put them on the back of the saucer. It just seems this ship was a bit lazy put together...

@nekophht
@nekophht 8 месяцев назад
The issue with "Plan B" landings is the issue I have with Akira deck plans that give it a single warp core that goes through the flight deck. Maybe halve the landing "deck" exterior section and shift the shuttlebay back into that recovered space. Maybe shift the nacelle pylons back a bit as well (and roll the nacelles 90 degrees so they're upright like on Oberth). I feel like if it's a cargo/tender design, it has way too many phaser banks. And if it's a combat ship, it has too much shuttle/cargo space implied. A test bed... yeah, I could really see that. If we scaled it based on the bridge module rather than the windows... it feels like it works better overall. Does the front view make you think of Prometheus, minus the bottom two nacelles? That's the kinda vibe I get.
@graemechapman4957
@graemechapman4957 8 месяцев назад
This design to me suggested that it had at max a crew of maybe 15-30 who probably hot-bunked, it's primary mission would likely have been short-range intercept/system patrol for frontier systems, likely max warp 8.6 for only a few hours, but a cruise speed of warp 5.5. it would also feature self sustaining capabilities due to assignment to frontier systems and likely lack of infrastructural support in such systems, like the mentioned workerbees, the hangers placement suggests that they likely go off to the sides for storing the shuttles, as for the warp core, we may be looking at a possible horizontal or even a early iteration of the Hyper-Injection core used on Sisko's Defiant; Star Fleet was known to be fooling around with warp core technologies during the TMP Era. And yes i did Play this ship in ST: Legacy (2006), I found it ok but rather fragile if not handled right.

Light vessel has 15-20 crews are enough to linked with mothership networks, even though warp speed at 8.6 as maximum level is not very fast. However, if this ship has long-distance mission to somewhere, to punch some temporary portals by circulating laser beam and then turn on Tachyonic sliptime system in the hyper-drive would be faster than warp speed.

Hmmm... Regarding the warp core, it could be a horizontal core, rather than vertical, allowing the shuttle bays interior to go further into the ship w/o issue I don't like the nacelles going sideways. The "staging area" I feel should be perhaps half the size, as it takes away valuable interior room. It reminds me a bit of a perimeter action ship I came across once, which has similar nacelles to an oberth, coming out of the saucer sideways, Kind of like a frigate version of this, even had a similar 'staging area'... it was called the Ashton. Scaling might be a bit off as you guys discussed. Otherwise, I do somewhat like this.

I kind of like the overall feel, and it seems like the show could have used more medium sized federation ships in cannon. Though like you mention, when you look at the details it fells like the proportions are a bit off; it seems like the easiest fixes would be moving nacelles back a bit further, and enlarge the saucer a bit. Though I suspect some of the issues come from in normal gameplay might not see enough of the ship for it to register as issues, compounded by it sounds like an early ship that most players would move past relatively quickly.

@@SGUDistantHope Oh, i agree. The ENT era of Legacy is a bit of a mess because there’s also the Yorktown Class in the ENT era as well as the Daedalus Class which have more clearly TOS elements. 15:57 That's what I was thinking, that this is the movie era version of the Archer. And in that light, I think some of the scale issues drop away. Don't think of it as needing the full amenities of a starship, think of it as a runabout-plus. Something that can very briefly emulate the functionality of a full ship, but is always meant to be attached to a larger support structure (probably not too many movie era ships, but maybe Striders are always attached to stations or planetside bases).

Having the Connie/Miranda aesthetics mixed with the Oberth nacelles rubs me the wrong way. And even at that I'd at least orient the nacelles like on the Oberth. And yeah, it seems like they tried to fit just too much onto a very small design. Those inset "doors" beneath the impulse engines seem too small to be shuttlebay doors. If you filled in that channel you could fit a reasonably sized roll-up door on the aft end of the ship.
