The movie that spawned one of the most enjoyable sci-fi shows of my childhood. Always love me some Stargate. As good as Kurt Russel is, Richard Dean Anderson took the character to such a lovable, charming level it's impossible to not adore him. Edit: You should check out SG-1, it's infinitely more fun than the movie, they get up to so much good stuff it's a blast. As for fav character in the movie, has to be little Scaara, the kid O'Neill (Two L's!) gave his lighter to.
@myopinion69420

O'Neil only has 1 L in the movie, the quite in season 2 "It's 'O'Neill', with two L's. There's another Col. O'Neil with only one L, and he has no sense of humor at all." is referring to the movie.

Good movie that launched one of the best Sci Fi franchises. Stargate Sg-1 is a great series, that is pretty unique for being set in modern times. Though apart from the cast and crew who are all amazing and the chemistry between the cast is phenomenal, what really sets it apart is the attention to real world science and mathematics, which is very impressive for a show dealing with entirely theoretical physics. Also, the humor cannot be over emphasized, it's perfect! With just the right blend of nods to other series and shows, wit, the self aware and self deprecating humor, the sarcasm and sass all mixed just right.
@michaelbreidenbach2834
@michaelbreidenbach2834 2 года назад
And, unlike other series, the characters don't forget their experiences from week to week. So if they encounter a similar situation or scientific problem in a new episode, they reference what they did in an earlier episode and explain why it won't work like that this time. Probably the best sci-fi show outside of Star Trek of the 1990's.

@@po5283 Yeah, but SG-1 was one of the first series with a constant memory of it's protagonists experience. "What is it with Egyptians and cats? Why cats?" In Egyptian mythology cats are the guardians of underworld who keep the dead from coming back to life - its why we don't have to worry about zombie outbreaks anymore. More practically for a people who preserved their dead, and believed the spirit could return to its corpse to check in on loved ones, cats kill rodents who would eat the preserved bodies.

Cool Fun Factoid: The guy playing the Chief and the young guy were also in the Stargate SG-1 series. The old man is Eric Avari and the young guy Alexis Cruz. The series picks up where the movie leaves off. Then you have Richard Dean Anderson playing Col. O'Neill. They built a whole universe around this movie.

The deal with cats and Egyptians was that they believed they were guardians of the underworld so protected your home from the dead. But counter to popular belief Egyptians actually preferred dogs as pets, not only were dogs useful as security but there's examples of them treating them as family members and giving them names.

37:04 "Should we watch _Stargate SG-1?"_ Absolutely. It was an awesome show. The quality slumped a bit after O'Neill was promoted to a General and placed in charge of the SGC, and dropped off _completely_ after O'Neill and Hammond were no longer part of the show, but up until then, it just couldn't seem to stop cranking out classic, defining moments.

SG-1 was an incredible series the first 8 years. Richard Dean Anderson as Colonel O'Neill was a perfect casting choice. It kinda went a bit hokey the last two. I think it had to do with the villains of the show at that point. There were also several tv movies based on SG-1. Atlantis was a good series. It picked up momentum from season 2 on. For me it was based on introducing a certain character. Universe was ok but lacked momentum to really get started considering it was the THIRD series. The production should have taken off from episode 1 since they already had TWO successful series under their belts. SG-1 and Atlantis are must see series.

The movie kind of acts like a pilot for the TV version which expands the whole concept. It ran for 10 seasons, spawning two spin off shows (and a short web-based 'prequel'). The TV show is enormous fun & very entertaining. Like old Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea in the 60's, the two movie leads of O'Neil & Jackson were recast and other new characters brought in for the TV adaptation.

Stargate SG-1 is one of the best sci-fi series of all time and went on for TEN seasons - and these are the old style seasons that are 22-23 episodes each. Around season 6 or 7 they split off the Stargate Atlantis series that ran in parallel with SG-1 and went for 5 seasons. Stargate Universe is a great show that was woefully under-rated and went for 2 seasons. SG-1 starts a little rough, to be frank, but it quickly finds its stride and the lore just goes deeper and deeper and it quickly becomes one of the best series of all time.

The series is so good. Seems to have a load of copy right issues on youtube but with how you guys muffle out music perhaps it wont be as big an issue if you move on to that? Then again not all networks go after shows with the music matching stuff like star trek seems to get manually flagged by butt head networks viewing reactions as competition for views instead of free advertising for their shows.

Re: The missing seventh symbol. As a Stargate fan, I know the gate has 39 symbols around the ring. Knowing the first six symbols, all they really needed to do was dial the first six symbols for Earth, and guess at number seven up to 39 times max, and they're home. 🙂 Another bit of gate trivia, which shows how much thinking went into the movie gate design and was carried forward into the three TV series: There are actually nine dialing positions around the gate, though only seven are needed to dial other planets. The mystery of positions eight and nine are eventually addressed in the TV series.
@ralphvelthuis2359
@ralphvelthuis2359 6 месяцев назад
It was eventually figured out that the point of origin was on the exact same position on every dhd. After that is was pretty easy to dial back home. Just punch in earth's position and then the symbol.

SG-1 was great. It had the old Star Trek feel in the beginning where every episode was a new planet and a new adventure. Later the over arching stories were fun too. SG: Atlantis was a bit of a disappointment. In the first episode they describe Atlantis as a city the size of Manhattan so I imagined episodes where they would explore the city and uncover mysteries. But unfortunately they just copied the formula from SG-1 and only very rarely did we see a room other than the 3 the show typically took place in. SG: Universe was train wreck. Good idea but it was so poorly executed it was as if every episode was written by a different person who didn't know any of the characters and didn't know anything about the show. And whomever thought up the idea of the "sex" stones should be psychoanalyzed. Basically, a person on the ship and a person on Earth would touch a set of stones and swap consciences. Then the person now on Earth would take that body and go have sex with it often gay sex with a straight person or vise versa. And nobody every once questioned how creepy that was. There would just be these scenes where some strange person would knock on some woman's door and say, "I'm your ex-husband Tom. I'm on a spaceship thousands of light-years away. I only have 24 hours to use this man's body to have sex with you so let's get busy." And there was never any consequences or pay off for this. It was just creepy for now reason.
@10thdoctor15
@10thdoctor15 2 года назад
Atlantis is my favourite, definitely not a disappointment. The reason they didn't explore the city very often was power and time (and because they couldn't get too powerful too soon for the story). Most of the show was written by the same half a dozen people. The stones were mainly used in SGU.
@robertanderson6929
@robertanderson6929 2 года назад
@@10thdoctor15 SG:A was a good show. I just found it disappointing that they had this HUGE set piece and we never saw more than a couple of rooms. But the "sex" stones in SG:U were just wrong. None of that belonged in the show. SG:U was trying to be ST: Voyager except they were able to send someone home each week to inhabit a stranger's body and have sex with it. It was just creepy and wrong.
