There was a time I would have agreed with you, but after the destruction of some of my favorite shows of all time, I say it is better to let it die than to tarnish its memory with a trash ending.
talks say there is a new continuead series from all 3 being created on scripted as we speak for new series bring back some of the loved people from the 3 for its cast as well as new obvs. i hope it pans out then rona hit and everything went to hold for now so best hopes
I refuse to watch the SyFy channel due to the company cancelling SGU. That was the sole show that I liked on the network. And FYI, Eli (actor David Blue) has a Twitch channel and Discord channel that he's very active in so check it out if you're an Eli fan.
+Rachel Mears Most people did *not* hate this series. It was a kicking and screaming loud minority of complainers who made it seem like the majority of people hated it. For example, if you look at the IMDB breakdown, almost 70% give this an 8.0/10.0 or above. The minority was only 4.3% of the people who gave this a 1.0.
@@gregthebaritone The loudest always get their way. Its an unfortunate trait of humanity. Unfortunately, the content don't speak up in time so the malcontents always get heard.
All I have to say is, it isn’t too late to revisit this show. To the best of my knowledge, all of the cast are still alive, maybe a bit longer in the tooth but that would work well in continuing the story.
What I loved so much about the finale was that the three main characters finally realized what had been holding them back all along and they changed. One realized there was more to life than making sure everyone knew you were the smartest man in the room and he humbled himself. One realized that he can't control the fate of the universe no matter how hard he tries or how brave he is and he lets go of his need to always be in charge. And one realizes he's not just a geeky gamer that got lucky but an actual hero that can and will do the right thing when everyone is depending on him. It's tragic we never got to see where they went from here, they were practically three new characters.
It really felt to me, as someone who really hated the earlier parts of the show, like the characters and story were finally set up perfectly for some really great story telling. It's a shame we never saw that happen, but hopefully when Amazon completes the MGM acquisition and makes more stargate we can finally get some closure for the characters.
I had a rough time getting through the first season but by the end of the second I was exactly super disappointed because of this very reason. The things I didn't like about the main characters was finally gone away with, a new fresh adventure hardened perspective was finally in play, just to see it end :/ Not to mention the destriny's mission/ story ark is one of the more interesting ideas in the stargate franchise. I really would've liked to see what the "sign" of intelligence at the beginning of time is or was. (Super cool concept whether they went "God" or "Super advanced species" either way I'd been cool honestly, or never knowing really just learning "things" about it to let the viewer draw their own conclusions/speculation. Ah maybe this reboot of stargate pans out, time will tell!
I don't get why people hated this show so much. It was much darker than the original stargate but it was still an amazing show. I hated hearing it got cancelled
The musical score for this closing scene is amazing. One of the best science fiction series ever, but Hollywood doesn’t understand this kind of storytelling anymore.
This music very much gives me nearly the same feeling that the opening music of 'Silent Running' gave me all those years ago when it opened in theaters. Masterful.
@@DorianF244 Facts!!! If it isn't about constant sex or constant bang bang shoot em up.... it doesn't do well in the current entertainment landscape. I loved SGU because it was about flawed complicated people put in a very complicated circumstance. It was a human drama. It's the kind of television that rotated around inner conflict, turf wars and the human ego. Stargate Universe was the kind of television that made you think. That's the complete opposite of most television these days. I hope that one day they bring it back in one form or another.
@@allsalis first its not netflix who did it and that star trek is more star wars then anything. The Orville is the true new star trek. And when they want to make a new Stargate series and they change anything that made Stargate Stargate then do not count me in.
Richard Dean Anderson doubt you’re the real RDA. But on the off chance you are. Thankyou for all your hard work on the Stargate show. You acted O’Neil really well. Thanks.
I take this ending as a positive. The smile he gives is one of hope for me. I think he fixed the life pod and survived along with the others. What can I say. I am a postitive person and can't believe in a bad ending.
This is one of the best endings in television history in my opinion. The soundtrack, the simple visuals and the ship shutting down the same way it started up. Ely looking at the FTL travel and smiling is an overwhelming thing to see given how much they went through and how much they lost. This was beautiful because it ended but the last scene lasts forever when I hear the Gauntlet theme.
If they ran that scene in 2020 they wouldnt have men. Probably all sis gendered women. Most the cast would have to be black and tough guys. All the tyranical baddies would be white. All slavery would only happen to non whites. There would be no Ori or anything at prophets bringing a new religion with a book. Most plots would be about saving the environment of planets. The wraith would develop a consensus with sgc to prevent overconsumption. Any other plotlines would be censored if they were not politically correct. ALL the stunning female actors would be removed or uglified so as not to objectify them.
@@johnyseimah229 Honestly, I wish they would, for no other reason than to piss these kind of people off, and watch them whine and complain and become the very thing they pretend to stand against. That would be quite entertaining to see. Few things are as pathetic to witness as the Counter-Cancel-Culture Cancel Culture cancelling while they whine about cancellers, LOL
The show had potential, but it was ruined by the ridiculous communication stones and the terrorist raid at the end of season 1. These elements completely destroyed the sense of being lost in an unknown region of space, millions and millions light years away from Earth, when the main characters could magically swap bodies with people on Earth (for boring filler episodes by the way) and visit their friends and family... or when some rogue Milky Way organization can just use the Stargate to attack the ship at any time. For me, this show should've cut all ties with the whole Milky Way, the moments the characters stepped foot on Destiny and just focus entirely on survival, exploration of the unknown, the alien race that was chasing the ship, and the mysterious structures discovered in some of the planets visited by the crew. Atlantis did a way better job at this, with the only exception that the characters weren't lost, and they obviously couldn't cut ties with the Milky Way entirely, because Earth ships could still travel the distance.
I disagree. I liked a lot of those elements. It actually got some interesting ideas about how to use them to move along story. Sgu actually had character development. Sg1 did for awhile. Then they abandoned it. Atlantis only did kinda here and there. But when they did do it.. it was really really good. Sgu is what Atlantis should have been from a writing style perspective. I've learned to like Atlantis. But when I first saw i was very turned off by it cause it looked more like a spoof than an actual series. I don't think it was trying to appeal to a younger audience. I think it was trying to be more adult. More serious. The issue is that's not really it's fan base. It didn't have the Indiana Jones goofy feel. It needed more time to build it's base. Or yes detached from Stargate to be something else. Star trek ds9 regardless if you think the idea was stolen tried to do something similar. They tried to be less wholesome and perfect like the series before. They tried much more serious subject matter. I hated the series at first because it abandoned the ideas of the preceeding series. But now. It's my favorite.
Oh god, I just finished it a hour ago. Stargate (SG1, Atlantis, Universe) was the best series I have ever watched. Way better than all Star Treks and anything :(
As poorly as this show started (as all the other series did), it really grew into something fantastic. People don't seem to appreciate the darker tone that this series brought, and I found it refreshing as the show became progressively better. The last few episodes were in my opinion StarGate at its best and most mature.
This show did not start poorly. The writers patiently developed the characters and the setting so that by the time the second season started, when the stakes were high, the audience actually cared about them and were vested in their survival. The writers of Stargate always played the long game and had a fanatical attention to detail, and wow did that pay off with this show. SGU is unquestionably the best show ever created.
Jarl Knudsen That is a strong opinion, but I can appreciate that. That's part of what made this show so interesting. The darker tone polarized the fanbase, with some arguing the show as a natural evolution on the themes of the franchise while others criticized it as removing all of the fun and energy from Stargate (albeit I thought some of the later stuff from the SG1 and Atlantis series bordered on unbearable slapstick humor). I personally found the arc of SGU very fufilling. There were some truly great stories tucked in there. From the looks of it, the Stargate movie trilogy that is currently in development hell will adapt a darker tone as well, so despite ignoring the TV canon, it would be amazing to see Stargate reborn.
It was a soap opera ... not a sci fi show. It even had the clasic "estoy embarazada" at some point. I loved the idea of ancient unmanned ships traveling the universe and plating star-gates. I loved that they really were stranded ..... unlike Atlantis where in season 2 they had powerful enough engines to span the distance between two galaxies in two months. But instead of showing that, they filled the episodes with 90% soap opera and that's why I hated it.
There are plans in the works from Brad Wright (producer I believe of sg1/ sga /sgu) for a fouth stargate series. It probably wont be about destiny however hopefully it will give some closure about what happened to the crew. That's if a streaming service does decide to even pick up the series.
It remains one of TV's biggest crimes that SGU got cancelled. It was a fresh perspective which the franchise badly needed, it was gritty, dark, well acted, and well written. Such a damn shame it never got finished.
@@dxgi3737 im a die hard stargtae fan and i liked it so what are u talking about ??? it was cancelled cause the suits established an insane goal that wasnt met..... pure and simple.. u cant just redesign the concept in order to get something darker and more grim and then expect it to perform the same way the franchise did all those years prior
Eli always reminded me of my partner, who unfortunately passed from Covid almost 2 years ago. So, this scene really gets me. Distance can be measured in different ways.
this scene is an end to 17 amazing seasons that will forever be a part of my soul. it doesn't matter what comes next... this is how i will remember this show.
If it helps, I was planning on traveling to a parallel universe this summer, one in which this show went on for another five seasons. So, if anyone wants me to bring back some DVD/BluRays from seasons 3 through seven, let me know. :)
It's a shame that the reason I loved this show so much, the fact that it was so different to other sci-fi shows, was the very same reason long-time sci-fi fans hated it so much. Thank you, SGU - for being as different as you were. I hope we get some kind of closure or conclusion to this awesome series someday.
I could echo (most of) the sentiments expressed below, but instead I'll take the time to compliment everyone involved with the show for pulling together what has to be one of the best show finales of all time. In case you missed it, the scenes featuring the lights going out across the ship were clearly an homage to the franchise itself coming to and end; sadly so that the last of the sets to go dark was of the stargate itself. So, to one and all involved in this show (and the others), well done.
@@MichaelMopar69 The goal was to reach ascension! The mission is all that matters now! Uncovering the true meaning of Destiny. Must be another obedient Young follower here *sighs*... We all know Rush is the real mastermind! We're not going home! Use a spirit stone if you get home sick... 😛😅
As a show, SGU had some struggles compared to SG1 and SGA. But the direction, music and some of the acting like in this last scene were heartfelt masterpieces. I grieve for the stories we lost. I celebrate the artistry that went into a show like this, and I pray that some day our media companies will resume telling these sorts of stories again. Goodnight Eli. Godspeed.
As much as I hated the finale, this last scene at least was what showed how amazing SGU was and could've been. The three best characters, with that final nod of acknowledgement from Rush, that solemn bow as Young went into stasis and of course the star, Eli Wallace, walking and enjoying the view one last time.
this was by far my favourite stargate show, i loved how they managed to bring some characters that werent just generic casts, the military tough guy, the nerdy allergic dude and the exotic "alien", but actually characters with personality and some background that gave them reasons to act the way they did. the story had so much potential, its a real shame they stopped the production. loved it and somehow am still looking forward for that one dude at mgm that gives green light to start again.
@@danielfarrell574 He couldn't. He had 3 weeks to repair the last stasis pod and enter it. There wasn' t enough food or life support to last for the 3 years in the intergalactic void where the ship couldn't refuel.
All that was needed was a single 90 minute episode with Eli and Ginn for the cast. While working on the stasis pod repair Eli hits a dead end so he figures out how to "unbox" Ginn from the computer where he put her to save Rush. While repairing the stasis pod they come across some equation/latent stardrive capability that can get them back to the milky way galaxy, Life support runs out so Eli reluctantly goes into stasis and Ginn implements the solution. Show ends with her waking Eli as the ship enters the Milky Way and they spend sometime together before waking everyone else...
Absolutely loved this show .. keep watching it on repeat. No matter what any one says it deserved a chance better than it got. I truly hope that in time someone revives it and let's it continue.
@Keeva2006 Completely agree, I re-watched Babylon 5 a couple of months ago, the CGI didn't age well but that isn't surprising, but that show had some of the most amazing character arcs and depth I have ever seen, nothing comes close.
It's more than unlikely because the set is already dismantled and probably destroyed. And now they are making a reboot of the Stargate franchise, so it is much more unlikely that they will continue the old stuff. SGU was also never a money maker and every episode is expensive, so there is no reason to continue it. It's over, realize it. All you can do is buy the books and read the continued story there.
They also digitized all the sets before they dismantled them so that they could be used later. Remember most environments in TV shows are not real locations now
joel goldsmith really nailed the score here. love that the whole piece remains unresolved as the credits appear.....maybe hinting at things to come. superb.
@@colonelcoover There was chemistry and once the writers stopped forcing them to act like douchebags, many of the characters were likeable, even Dr. Rush after a fashion.
MGM went through Bankruptcy proceedings. They literally couldn't afford it anymore. I just wanted someone to pick up the show... even if it's later and the cast is older... so what? The ancient stasis pods just slowed the aging. They must have malfunctioned.
@@Zxarr but remember this ship is old AF the stasis pods could be the earliest of models more to keep people alive and doesn't slow down ageing as much as the later ones as seen in SGA maybe slows down ageing 1/2 to 1/3 even if there is no age slowing it was meant to be a 3 year trip to explain this as seen already in SGU the ship and FTL drive are already damage to hell at the very last tinny tinny bit of the trip a weak link in the FTL drive could give out and they spend 15 or so years a drift then 15 or so years later Destiny reaches a star and majestically dives in to it for fuel. boom the opening to SGU season 3 that explains why the cast is older and can still be lore friendly. wish it would happen watching the Destiny dive in to a star for fuel would look awesome in modern CGI.
Too much drama not enough sci fi. That's literally what shows like SGU were and still are lacking to this day. If you are looking for everyday, same old, boring drama...... Watch a show that doesn't require million dollar sets. I CAME for the aliens, tech and conflict. Sci-Fi show written by people more suited for soap opera's, of course the acting was hammy.
This was a great way to end a series. Moving to different parts of the ship, shutting down lights and fans, the feeling of closure is well executed. Too often, the closure is bungled, leaving a feeling of "If it came back, I wouldn't want to watch it." This was closed so well that I would like to see it come back.
I know a lot of people who liked SG1 and SGA did not like SGU. But SGU always has been something different. There's less humour, but it's a story that dragged me in and made it into my personal favourite show ever. The moody tone and the premise of following god was just so enchanting towards me, these hopelessness and the knowledge that they are getting farther and farther away from home... Broke my heart when I learned that there will be no more... Edit: Just to make myself clear, I love SG1 and SGA was okay as well, but it did not catch me as much as SG1.
Frankly I prefer both SGA & SGU over SG1, SGA is a better version of SG1 & SGU is just overall better because it's a purposefully a long-term story arc & those are more demanding, more risky for TV shows but also the most rewarding. But I disagree that there's less humor, it's just a different type of humor... serious humor.
msms47 There is (used to be) a very well written fan script for series 3 which use to be here www.philotic.com/stargate/ BUT is no longer there. Hopefully that link will help you find it though as it really helps with the "completion process" ;)
J ML In the end I enjoyed all three of them as well. I really liked the beginning of SGA but I was kinda disappointed because I expected SGA to be what SGU would be later. I hoped for more actual survival problems, which disappeared very fast in SGA.
Considering that series and show structures have changed considerably from the 90s, Stargate Universe and its surrounding drama has aged relatively well. Rather than new Stargate spinoffs, I would love to see the continuation of this series.
I miss the SG franchise. Nothing will never be the same without these wonderful people both in front of the camera and behind. SG1, SG Atlantis and SGU all missed forever.
When the Main piano theme hits at 1:16 and Eli has this look of peace on his face it just makes me so happy and sad at the same time. Damn dust in my eyes!
Just finished binge watching SGU yet again. SGU was ahead of it's time, people weren't ready for another space scifi series in 2010.. fast forward to 2020, this show would make a killing today especially with Netflix and how popular space and scifi series are on Netflix. MGM needs to work out a deal get season 3 going. They did a fantastic job with SGU and I don't think SG fans at the time were ready for the different style of filming and editing they used for SGU but I loved it. It was more mature, realistic, better props, better CGI, better filming quality etc. This show would more than likely do very well in ratings today than it did then.
After decades and decades, many seem to totally miss the value of appreciating something while it is running, and instead push for its removal, not realizing having less (or having nothing at all) is even worse. Plus, they only thin of themselves, and their own personal entertainment value, completely ignoring those who DO enjoy it... as if they don't matter.
Such a beautiful ending even to say the ending of the franchise. Despite knowing everything that happens I now want to rewatch the whole series again. That's how well it was produced and I know I'm not alone in thinking that.
When this series ended so did sci-fi pretty much. The channel went from something captivating to 1950's giant creature attack remakes. I would love to be frozen in metallic hydrogen instantly, wake me in a couple thousand.
It's been twelve years! Almost as long as Brad Wright's tenure on the franchise (14 years). This franchise has done so many great things and still so much untapped potential. Please, MGM, get some good writers and producers in a room and have them come up with something cool that'll bring in new fans, but also honor what has come before. Stargate was my introduction to Science Fiction beyond Star Trek. Both are among my favorite franchises/ stories ever. Star Trek is back. Now it's time for Stargate.
As I fall asleep at night, I often think of Eli and Destiny. Ten years alone to explore, repair, and bond with this gorgeous vessel. Till the day I die, I will be on that ship between galaxies
the way this series got cancelled right as it was opening up after all its world building is absolutely criminal. this was, by far, my favorite sg series
Let's be clear here: This is not the final ending of Stargate Universe, but the final ending of Season 2. This Stargate show was very well-made, had great potential and a strong fanbase. It was cancelled only because the TV network in 2010 made a stupid decision to broadcast the show in a different timeslot where most people didn't or couldn't watch. And thus the ratings of the show dropped and the show got cancelled. It pisses me off to this day, because I liked the show very much!
ReptorULTRA7 While I love your enthusiasm, I fear that it is the ending of Stargate Universe and not the ending of season 2. No more seasons were announced for SGU and no other series based on Stargate are currently planned. MGM are planning to reboot the franchise, although I am not sure I am waiting for that...
Daniel Brongers Yes, I know. Unfortunately SGU as we know it is dead. Any remake is going to fail for sure, because it won't be the same actors, sets, writers and production crew.
I agree, but if I remember correctly, the original Stargate was featured Kurt Russel (as Jack O' Neill), while in the series Richard Dean Anderson played him (in which he did an excellent job by the way), which actually worked. What I am most worried about is the fact that the reboot will be in conflict with the current Stargate storyline, with Stargate Universe still (very) fresh in our memory. Personally, I would like to see a movie, or continuation of the Universe storyline, because I sense that that story wasn't quite finished yet when that show got cancelled...
the scripts for the 3rd season and bringing the story to an actual end can be found online. more of a miniseries to tie it up than an actual season tho I suppose
Adored this show, couldn’t figure out why it was canned. Never really a stargate fan, but this was different, it was darker to a small degree but more than that it had an interesting story arc that was just starting to pay off. Might have to rewatch the series
The show was a little ahead of its time in terms of marketing. Metaphorically and ironically between universes in how people consumed content. SGU offered mini teasers online before that was really a thing. That lead to a division is the fanbase and the ratings suffered in the TV medium. People watched the show, but the old metrics didn't reflect that, so this beautiful piece of science fiction got the axe. If SGU had been released a few years later, I'm sure it would have had at least 5 seasons.
Reminds me a little of the final episode of quantum leap, Sam's sacrifice for Al meaning he would be forever alone jumping from person to person for eternity
Looks like Eli screwed some calculations. He said its gonna take 3 years to get to the other side, its been 11 years and still not there. Dammit SGU needs 3 season.
This was sthe best StarGate series. Truly. The most gut wrenching, the most emotional, the more "realistic" in terms of people's emotions dealing with this kind of stuff, with their relationships, the handling of teh unknown, the battle of the egos... Don't get me wrong, I loved SG-1 and Atlantis, and I still do (just started re-watching SG-1 last month, and it's still a lot of fun), but this series was what should've revived the franchise - it was bleak, it was rough, it was a battle for survival, it was grim and dark, and irritating at times, but it was awesomely done, and that is undeniable. I did shed a tear or two at the end of this episode (same for my mom, when I talked her into watching ;) ), and to this day I am more angry that they cancelled SGU than I was with Fox for Firefly. True story.
Stargate Universe was my favourite of the franchise. It was cut short just as it was building momentum to become something spectacular. I hope one day they revive it from stasis without changing the tone of the series. Even today it feels fresh when compared to more contemporary science fiction series. It is sad that newer shows seem to ignore the need to ground some part of the story in reality. Please bring back this show.
For people REALLY wanting a resolution of the cliff hanger, they did make one in comic book form. There are other people onboard, frozen too, Ancients who have the knowledge to resolve the situation, since they got full access to the ship and know how it fully works.
@@samrcat4077 I've never actually read the whole thing, only saw some parts of it on RU-vid. How do they explain the fact that the ancients are still alive? Their tech slows down aging, doesn't stop it.
The show started bad, but it could have been saved! First time I watched ST:DS9 I didn't finish the first season, because I thought it was gonna stay at the same pace. The writers could have listed to the criticism by the fans, and fixed it. I was dying to see some kind of continuation of "the meaning of life stuff" that Daniel Jackson talked about in early SG-1. "A pattern in cosmic microwave background", in the Ancients words "the destiny of all things", "a complex structure at very beginning of time", "a mystery rooted in foundation of reality ". Its a fascinating philosophical subject!
I really wish they had not cancelled this show. I don't care who didn't like it and I don't want to hear assholes talking about it being shitty, KEEP YOUR SNOTTY COMMENTS TO YOURSELVES. I liked this story line and feel they could have done so much more with it after this episode. I still from time to time hope against hope that it will come back.
I agree 100%.. the original SG shows were great and all, but this one was an like going on an adventure into the unknown. I just loved the concept of the show, it was so original. real shame it was cancelled, and it goes to show how good of a show it was that I still think about it long after it's been cancelled. the only other cancelled show I think of is Jericho.
when it first came out, i didnt like the show, and i stopped watching about a third of the way through the first Season, but years later after i was ranting about the show being bad in its first season someone said to me simply, Take off the nostalgia goggles and watch the first seasons of most Sci-fi shows with a critical eye, that might change your perspective a little and so i watched SG1, TNG and DS9 and i admit, the first seasons are pretty bad in alot of parts. so i sat down again to watch Universe, determined to get through it all this time, and it wasnt bad, once the actors had grown into their roles, and the Writers had learned to write for those characters it became pretty decent, and into the second season it started to get pretty dang good, then to be left on this note was heart wrenching. I wish i had stayed the course, and been part of the journey when it came out, and i wish we could experience the rest of the journey
I didn't like it at first. I forced myself through the first season and there were some good episodes ("Time"). The second season I found far more enjoyable and the series became a favorite. I was sorry to see it leave, but it ended well.
I feel that SGU hamstrung itself in the first season. There was only one funny person on the ship and very little levity. Everything was on the knife edge of catastrophe all the time, and the characters often abused the bodies of those who hosted their minds on Earth. I found it exhausting to watch. The second season was much better, though. It turned a gritty, humorless tragedy into a gritty, fascinating space epic whose vision encompasses the origin of the universe itself. (And Eli was getting thinner, too! Go Eli!) This is my favorite television show of all time, mostly because of the second season. It's a crying shame that we didn't get to see how it all panned out.
And, now this is all we ever will get about the present crew of the Destiny. That is, unless someone with the money will resurrect the Show and make it live once again. It is bad to leave everyone who liked this show hanging, and three years have turned into many more than what we were led to expect. If this ever happens, we will not get the same cast that we had at the "intermission" of Stargate Universe, but others with the drive and continuity to make this happen once again. I only hope I will still be alive if it does happen. Make It Happen!
SGU is just like District 9. In District 9 we are told it will take 3 Years for the aliens to get back, we are still waiting for the sequel. In SGU we are told it will take them 3 years to make the trip, we are still waiting for season 3.
They also both dealt with trying to honestly portray how real science fiction elements would impact real people. Aliens would be, for lack of a better word, quite alien to us. They certainly wouldn't be fluent in English, and probably wouldn't have the physical capacity to speak our languages, as we wouldn't theirs. You would never see Kirk trying to seduce a District 9 alien, for example.
Had always hoped this would be a "goodnight" and not a "goodbye"... SGU maybe have been the poorest viewed, but it was still great. Shame to see all the SG shows gone
It's such a pity. 😥 Looking at all the crap out there, and they cancel this. Honestly, sometimes I'm dreaming about these things in a better way, and when I wake up I wonder: which is reality? What I just dreamt or what I'm about to wake up to?
