this video features clips from (nearly) all starkid shows from 2009-2018 (and some tin can bros as well) - I only included songs where I though there was a clear change/improvement in their vocals :)
I feel like Joe Walker's vocals are often so underrated because of how incredible and dedicated he is as a character actor it feels almost strange hearing his regular speaking and singing voice lol
They should be appreciated even more because he can do all of these ridiculous voices without ever breaking character AND THEN SING IN THEM AND STILL SOUND GOOD
Ok everyone’s talking about Wagon on Fire but I would like to point out that Joey really grows between AVPS and Starship. His voice is so much stronger and more supported in Life!
Kitty of Yore I want to hear him singing Starship songs now because they’re some of favorites and he’s constantly improving and he would sound incredible
Yes! He sounded already a lot better in Starship, that was the first big difference, although I do agree that Wagon On Fire is the best song he's sung.
featherlight i’d like to counter with when he sang Agony with Curt on shitty broadway. his voice has never sounded better than that song and I will go down fighting for it. edit: and coldest goodbye reprise
Joe does so many different voices to sing! People say he's not the best but it's so hard to sing with different accents! Thanks so much for this video!
also like they didn't use mics until starship so for all the shows before that they were working double time on projection and like sustaining, what a talented talented bunch
I can respect all you choices except... No love for Jaime during Rogues Are We? I personally think her Poison Ivy voice showcases the sweet spot of her range.
You can really hear the quality change for all of them. Lauren singing "Into The Night", Joey singing "Wagon on Fire", Joe singing "Torture Tango" and Jamie signing "Harry" blows me away every time. :3 Though we all know that Joey signing as Ted in "The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals" is always going to be awesome too. XD Great appreciation video!
@@franfrankie7 That is true, can't forget that solo for Lauren. She does a wonderful job there too. :3 I suppose I said Ted because of how he sung the line "Now we're going to conical, a story so astronomical." My heart can't take it. hahah XD
I love all the voices joe does, they’re so much fun to listen to cause they’re different and unique and it shows how talented he is cause some people get hurt doing voices like that
i've said this many times and i stand by it: avpsy is one of joey richter's best performances in any starkid show, like man he took a staged reading to the next LEVEL
The progress Joey and Joe made is always astonishing to me. Especially Joey, If someone would show me M&MD and Starship/TTTO when I didn't know them, I wouldn't believe this is sung by the same person.
3:58 *Spies Are Forever Reprise comes on* hnzdfiheih Gosh f***ing damnit! Now I have to cry for the millionth time because Curt's face and Joey's singing skills are too emotional for me to handle. -I will protect the ship with my life.-
PLEASE DO PART 2 and maybe you can include live performances too? not only from shows? that would be extrenly good since they are often doing the same songs over the years (esp potter trilogy) so you can really see the difference! P.S. and maaaaybe darren? he is a starkid after all
this video made me realise that even though jamie is not really one of my favorites (i like her- i love them all, i just don't obsess over her like i do joey or robert) she is definitely one of the best singers
Can I just thank you real quick for including Life in Joey's voice evolution? I've always loved Joey's voice during that song, like his voice on the final note always blows me away. (also Life in general is a really underrated song and deserves more appreciation) Can I just say I don't really understand people who say that Joe can't really sing? Like did you just, zone out during his verse in When I Was? and during all of Golden Rule Reprise? And tbh I never really thought about the included verse from Achmed, but that, too. And this wasn't included: But his verse in The Night Belongs to Snarl also sounds so good. Joe can legitimately sing, like hello
Joe does what he does well, by which I mean his character voices (although at times i think he takes it too far), which does make it seems like he’s a weaker singer. In I Was he’s very nasal, and I actively dislike Golden Rule reprise despite twisted being my fav starkid show because his voice isn’t actually very good in it. That being said, in SAF I think he’s a *lot* stronger, and it’s almost certainly because he’s not doing a major character voice. In firebringer, again, it drops. As Ducker he does something with his voice where he kinda makes it shake, if that makes sense? It is in character, sure, and may well require a lot of control, but it doesn’t *sound* good, and that’s probably why people say he can’t sing. I hope he does some more realistic parts in future shows, rather than characters with extreme voices, as he’ll probably sound a lot better, and that’s always a good thing!
So awesome video as usual. I was wondering if you could do a "Best dance move from each starkid song" kinda like your best line from each starkid song. I know not all songs have dancing but most of them do and I thought it could be cool idk...
Joey did a comedy version of Confrontation from Jekyll and Hyde for Shitty Broadway last year and tbh comparing that to AVPM is a fucking RIDE. He's always had an enjoyable voice, but the dude has put in SO much work and it's insanely clear the last couple years especially.
it’s so hard to show joe’s bc most of the time he’s singing in his character’s weird voices rather than his own voice (umbridge, voldemort, achmed, etc.)
Question: Does Joe Walker even have a "normal" singing voice I don't think I've ever heard him sing in his natural voice in a Starkid show - he always gets the characters with funny voices, and the fact that he can sing so well in them is ridiculously impressive, but I wanna know what he sounds like when he's not playing a character. I'm sure I can find it but I've never seen it yet
Honestly there’s such a remarkable change in vocal confidence and subsequent strength that’s really incredible to watch/hear. Makes me happy to see the way they’ve grown as performers as a whole :’)
Might be SUPER RANDOM, but I think my favorite joey vocal is in somebody’s gotta do it in spies are forever. He’s so good at continuing the character voice while sounding great!
Watching joe change accents from character to character and keep it when he sings is honestly incredible and makes the character so believable. Like is that joe walker in a dress singing? No that IS umbridge and I never question it
@@laurenmanion861 but what about joey's homeless man part? was it? i really understanf nothing in music but i didnt find it that spectacular! anyway, thanks for the answer!
@@laurenmanion861 I see what you mean, though I think Cup of Roasted Coffee would still have been a worthy clip - I mean their harmonies are SO SMOOTH AND FLAWLESS, which is also that needs to be developed (see e.g. the beautiful finish of Different as can be in the Starkid Reunion because Jow improved so much). But then again there were plenty of clips and they were all wonderful!
I'm SO glad you used Lauren's version of this song for Trail to Oregon (7:09) and not the get naked song, cuz I love her version the most!! After watching the musical for the first time, that song would be stuck in my head and no matter how weird it was to listen to it, I would listen to it a lot lol
Seeing how much growth they’ve had gives me so much hope for myself. They were good back then and now they’re great and I hope I can be as good as them someday.
can we have joe be in a show where he gets to sing without having to keep up a character voice I just wanna hear how good he is when he can sing in his natural voice
