Starlink Unboxing / Installation On Shingle Roof / Before And After Speed Tests / Tutorial 

Ok, I installed one sept 2024. There NO WAY YOU CAN prevent TEARING THE ASPHALT. So cut it to where the screws go into the fashing at the top. There is the center, and another on either side. There really should be a flat piece with holes on the INSIDE of the lower base to also screw into. When my starlink was on the ground on the little standard stand the "face" of it was always vertical that is narrow up and down. However on the roof the whole face rotated 90 degrees and went horizontal go figure. ALSO I WOULD NOT USE THE BLACK TAR TAPE STUFF ON THE TOP BASE IN BETWEEN THE PIVOT MOUNT AND IT. IT WILL CAUSE IT TO "WOBBLE" I WILL TAKE IT OFF LATER. VERY MESSY

Definitely would not be happy with that 42 mbs down. If I get mine and it runs that slow I think I’ll cry..

And why didn't you mount it to the end of the roof a few feet away? No need put a hole in your roof. I put mine on the eave of an out building next to my home. I just repurposed an old Dish Network wall mount with a 1 1/4 PVC coupling as a bushing. 3 times fast then HughesNet.

I installed the flashing so the middle hole was pointing down slope so I didn't have to lift the shingles up. I don't think this flashing kit has very good instructions

I think I would rather place the satellite near the edge of the roof and run the cable through the gable end instead of cutting a hole in my roof.

I believe you should remove the black conduit. The Starlink cable is UV rated and that black thingy will just provide a direct tunnel for bugs to get it.

We just bought a mountain property in rural California. We have DSL. I have purchased the Starlink system. My Questions are: Will DSL and Starlink cancel one another thus giving us slow speeds? We work from home so the internet is VIP for us. Are there special "Settings" I have to set for both DSL and Starlink to work together and give us faster speeds? I got both services because I didn't know what to expect and needed a Plan B. Our realtor said she had both services and her kids don't experience any slow speeds as they Game Online. I never thought to ask about the settings. *Do I just set up Starlink accordingly? *Is it plug and play or do I need to adjust Settings? *If so what might that be? *Is there a video someone can point me to? I would like to set up Starlink asap as they are charging us now and it's still in the box :( Can some of you gurus chime in and point this man in the right direction. It appears that you put to router in garage. has that caused any issues with the service.? I ask because other videos state to centrally locate it in the house.

Glad it's working well for you. I've done Directv installs and old school tv antenna installs, but not Starlink. I'm impressed with the automatic positioning - much easier than Directv or Dish. I'm still surprised they make a mount that requires you to drill a hole in your roof! I'm the same age as you and i figure you probably installed TV antennas back in the day. I would have run the cable along the ridge and brought it in on the side wall rather than putting a big hole in my roof. I couldn't figure out why they had you cutting shingles and putting it under the shingles like flashing until i saw you drill the hole. Then I understood. I'm also amazed that the power light (or any light) isn't where you can see it. And there's no ethernet connection to hook it into your existing network switch. Looks like you have a nice network setup there. But i guess you would need a WiFi receiver to connect the Starlink router to your existing network. I had a Linksys gaming adapter years ago that would connect to a WiFi router and give you an ethernet connection that could connect to a PC or wired router.

Why didn’t you mount it on the tower?

I would never mess with the top of the roof. Better to use a pole on the side wall or have the dish at the top of the antenna mast you have (if there are free slot on the top).

Great video, thanks for posting. Got ours today. We live in the forest and when I tried the clear sky test with the phone (took forever) it said I'd have issues. Tried two pole locations, Viasat & Dish network, (gone) so will try my flat front porch roof. Then I'll order the appropriate mount.

I just would have slide it underneath the first top shingles no cutting screwed it in at the top tar caulked the rest of the plate drilled my hole for the cable and called it a day

So ridiculous they don't include the pivot mount with the flashing mount.

I just received mine today, the flashing mount is now $93 and the pivot is $68. It also only ships with a 50 ft cable. I already have a gable pole mount I will us for the install so I won't be purchasing any extra mounting components.

I wouldn’t put it on the roof. Mine is on my deck.

The connector on the antenna end of the cable can be flattened back against the cable, allowing it to pass through a smaller hole. That requires you to route it from inside to outside.

I thought you did a very professional job. I'd hire you to do mine!

I just noticed on another video they have a ridgeline installation with heavy weights on it centered on top of the roof. I might have to do something like that.

Gerald at 8:17 in the video you are holding a flash mount to install your dish on the roof. Where did you get it? What is it called? Can you provide an idea of where I could acquire or purchase that item? It looks like a great solution as my best option is to do my install like you did.

It seems the only reason to center over the joints, is if you were JUST using the mount without the larger piece. In that case you would need to use lag bolts into the joints to secure it. … Anyways, great video and sorry about your glass table top, that was a bummer.

Question: where is your router from the satellite dish? And curious to know if having a metal roof can affect the signal to the router...my guess is yes 🤔

Excellent informative video. RIP patio table. Thanks for leaving that part in there. Just ordered one and will be installing onto an existing directTV mount. 3D printed a sleeve to adapt the two pole diameters to one another. 73's.

I was told to water proof tape the connector on the antenna where it plugs in. I read about of folks antenna died from water shorting out the power.

Know that, the two 3" lag bolts that came with the pivot mount are designed for an RV installation, directly drilled into the roof. They are useless for attaching to the flash mount top cover (not the flat base) for a house roof. All of the provided hardware in both pivot and flash mount kits, in my opinion, were insufficient for a secure roof installation, so I used my own screws, washers and bolts for my shingle roof install. Especially relevant living in Florida with excessive rain, tropical storms and hurricanes. I fortified all pre-holes, drilled them out and upgraded with longer / wider screws, bolts and washers. Used Wensilon, Hex Washer Head 410 stainless steel, regular and Self Drilling Screws. For added sealant and first layer, UV & Weatherproof 2" Sealant Roofing Tape. Second layer, Permatex Black Silicone Adhesive applied to all screws with Thread Sealant Paste, plus Medium Strength Thread Locker 243. Then, pre-blocked all holes with 2" rubber tape. Third water sealant layer, I brushed on a few coats of Thompson's water seal on / around the edges of the flash mount base and screw heads. Am also definitely following Gerald's lead and using the Black Flex Split Wire Conduit, as I'm running surface cable.

Thanks so much for the video. I just got my Star Link unit here in the Philippines. I can't put it on my roof (metal roofs here) but I have a work around. You answered a question for me - the satellite dish swivels as well as moving up and down. Also, I'm glad the one and a quarter inch drill bit worked. I just bought a one and three eighths inch bit. Again, thank you for the very informative video.

I use a technique to look at the bright side. Think of the headline. Then imagine a worse headine. "Tool slides off roof breaking beautiful glass table" ....."66 year old man critically injured sliding off roof onto a glass table" Great job on the installation. You are a great American.

Thanks for the video, I think you did a fine job. If I may be so nosy, what part of the country (next biggest city/state) if you don't mind. We have a cabin in Blue Creek, OH and I think Starlink just became available. Frontier, Earthlink (DSL)& SOCS (fiber) wanted $1000+ to run new phone lines or fiber since we're so far (0.8 miles) off the road. We have Viasat now and it's slow and unreliable.
