Starmer Lays Down The Law |  

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is clear he wants order in the streets: to that end, after chairing a meeting of key ministers and chiefs of police, he warned that government’s patience could not be taken for granted and there would be no tolerance shown to those rioting or indulging in vandalism.
For Starmer, who took over a little over one month ago from Conservative prime minister Rishi Sunak, it’s been a test of fire and wills.
The county is seeing the worst outbreak of violence in many years following the horrific murder of three young girls. Although initial reports blamed the murders on Muslim immigrants, subsequently it was revealed by the police that the suspect was a British citizen born and bred.
His name remains a secret for now but the initial confusion had given right wing anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim groups sufficient leeway to hit the streets and target public buildings. Police in many cities seemed taken by surprise and casualties were reported.
More challenging for Starmer is rebuilding trust among communities and between communities and the authorities.
