wow... great gotcha from the musk fans .... 'the thumbnail used to say 'debris field guaranteed'....yeah... its also said 'starship 4'.... youtube streams default to the old thumbnail.... in this case the one from starship 4! That bein said... maybe I should put it back.... after all it did end in a debris field! None of it changes the fact the nearest a starship has gone is the indian ocean.

I don't know, he did say at the Starship 4 good job for I forgot what exactly. He's not 100% bitter. In this case it's all because the booster catch is totally meaningless to him. It's beyond optional for Artemis 3, which will be delayed by a lot. So seeing this already set the tone of "oh, we're improving irrelevant things" hence his total lack of enthusiasm. Well, to be fair, it's not totally meaningless, as maybe they can reuse some of those engines which would make the huge spending on these tests a bit less huge. Though it would help just as much, if not more, if they focused on the important parts, so they need less tests in the first place... that way they could've spent the same or less while delivering earlier (still a lot over the deadline, buy maybe just by 5-6 years instead of 7-10) ...

So SpaceX definitely have real engineers doing real work....but the problem is that the thing they're working on is misguided and impractical in conception. And it's great that they managed to achieve the thing they tried to achieve here...but in a way it would almost be better if they didn't, because this success doesn't change the fact that the plan is to launch 10-15 Starships per one Starship launched to moon or Mars, which is a *ridiculous* way to do this. Like, imagine they are 9 fueling launches in and something goes wrong and number 10 wrecks their facilities. That could screw the entire mission. Which means they will need some sort of redundancies in place to mitigate...but that isn't even on the radar. So meeting these sorts of intermediate goals is kind of like a terminal cancer patient catching and then recovering from the flu -- it's good that they get a little more time, but it doesn't change the fact that they're still in for a long, painful demise over the next months/years.

Perhaps they don’t always critically engage with the actual evidence or setbacks, and instead, they prefer to stay in echo chambers where optimistic promises are seen as proof of progress. They often ignore the failures because doing so challenges their belief in Musk’s genius. They did not expect to recover any of starship with this test but they were testing telemetry and material abrasion. Telemetry was pretty spot on and there was a definite improvement on abrasion. If you recall test 4, half the wing had disappeared. At least they have shown they can recover half of it. And as it is now can reliably lift 100 tonnes to LEO or about 200 satellites in one go. Any defence body in the world would love to do that. The other thing you’ve forgotten to mention is they are profitable even while experimenting with starship so they can do this all day, everyday until they succeed and they will, trust me. They aren't putting payloads because these are still expected to be destructive tests. If you listen to SpaceX's stream, they didn't even expect to land the booster. That was a bonus. They are doing rapid iterative design with expected failures. Tf00t doesn't know this because he is being deliberately ignorant. They will put payloads on it once they stop doing test flights. Once they get there they could put a JWST on this without folding it up. The value for humanity is incalculable if they succeed, and it doesn't even have to be reusable to be profitable. But so far they caught the booster on their first try, so it looks good to go very soon. But they absolutely expect to fail at this stage so they can quickly get data and iterate on their designs. Saturn V total program cost was roughly $50 B in today's dollars. Starship's cost has been like $5 B mostly in development and infrastructure, and roughly $100 M launches. You're not understanding how ridiculously cheaper the Starship development model is if you're whining about a few ships blowing up in the process of ironing it out. Yes you could spend a fortune more and have the first ships be closer to perfect, but it would be foolishly inefficient compared to what they are doing. Now you wring engine performance up, and weight down, to maximize payload. Engines are 60% or so of the launch cost. Having your 33 engines reused even just 5 or 10 times will bring the cost of launch down significantly. This is an obviously and vastly superior model of operation, it's hilarious that anyone is comparing it to the Saturn V as if it's actually worse. You could never even think of getting the Saturn V onto a multiple launches per day schedule, even with all the extra cost.

Calling Elon Musk equivalent to Bernie Madoff reflects poorly on you. You might as well call him a Nazi while you’re at it. The reality is that Musk has actually created things. There are millions of Tesla cars on the road, Falcon 9 has flown hundreds of times, and Starlink works and is getting better. Timelines are aspirational, and if you compare Tesla's timelines to those of Ford, New Shepard, or Boeing, Tesla is still ahead. Sure, the Apollo program was next-level, no question, but if you compare anyone else in the field today, no one outshines SpaceX. You said Musk would never buy Twitter-he did. You said Tesla would go bankrupt-when was that supposed to happen? Starlink was risky, yet it's profitable now. Funny how that works. Go ahead, doubt Optimus, go ahead and doubt RoboTaxi, but the only grifter here is you. And sure, the Roadster 2 hasn’t appeared yet, but it’s a niche product, not central to Tesla’s mission. As for the Hyperloop, the issue isn’t the concept; it’s the implementation. And to be clear, Musk was trying to get other engineers involved in the Hyperloop project-it was more of an engineering challenge, not something he was heavily investing in. High-speed anything in the U.S. faces major regulatory hurdles. One reason the Boring Company makes sense is that it can bypass some of these regulatory roadblocks. The same can’t be said for above-ground projects that require extensive government approval. In short, just because you can’t think of a reason to go to Mars doesn’t mean others can’t. Musk is willing to spend everything he’s made from Tesla to get there. The money is in place, and it doesn’t require government approval. And your opinion certainly doesn’t matter.

@TheEsseboy these particular engines will not fly again... they'll be test fired to destruction most likely to verify their capacity for reuse, but SpaceX has moved onto the next version engine already. Everyone looks at these early vehicles as if they are the final product for some reason and make unreasonable comparisons to Saturn V, when this combined stack is both larger AND intended for full reuseability. Saturn V was entirely throw away... a much easier thing to do. even Shuttle was only a partly reusable system, and it was crippled by politically driven design decisions - I'm amazed it worked as well as it did.
