@Michael F. Tommey but you talking about sea/water resistance on the torpedos... this ones are on space, with no waves, wind, water resistance etc... and they are using lasers or plasma based guns... on stationary ish objects...

It seems like an amazing waste of energy firing weapons like that where most of the shots miss their target. Its kind of like a massive energy shotgun. You just hope a beam or 2 out of 12 hit their mark.

Lol, yeah I totally don't get the rng of XCOM or other games with similar mechanics. You could literally stand right next to the enemy and still miss, and the enemy had like 20% hit chance while one shoting your guys across the map.

They had turrets That were firing beam weapons at super fast velocities. At a quite large ship coming towards them, not even making evasive maneuvers In visual range Of a space station, with no gravity, no air resistance, and no objects blocking the path of the weapon being fired **AND THEY STILL MISSED?!** Not even Imperial Stormtroopers are that bad of a shot...

@@TheLichruler Ya know, it's quite possible they were missing their target on purpose.

If you watch carefully, the ship actually maneuvers right before the turrets fire, thus invalidating the firing solution.

@@KentonBenfield Boi you can't evade a laser moving at light speed or near light speed at all It'd hit before the ship even began to move

@@greenradiozone824 If the evasive maneuver was based on perceiving the laser light then yes, you're hit the moment you see it. However, if the ship monitors the performance of the turret and predicts the moment of firing (via maybe a capacitor array charging), and the turret can't adjust aim during firing, then the ship can begin to move out of the firing line a few seconds before and then the shot will miss. Of course, any movie that needs this much speculation to make sense just isn't well written.

@Justin Edwards This is not supposed to be a Marvel movie or transformers os yes it is a big deal.

Would have made more sense if he ordered the second shot regardless, only for automatic safety protocols to lock the firing system to prevent catastrophic damage to the station. By the time he manages to authorise the override with his clearance the ship passes. Very easy way to make it clear he wasn't admitting defeat, while having a realistic way of letting the Bugs get past him.

Tactics were odd but realistically that's what weaponized lasers would look like in space, not a bunch of "bullets" like you see in so many other movies. If anything they got that part right lol

@@seanwalters1977 Really though...tactics were horrible! They bunched up all their ships in the stations line of fire...and then were so busy dodging that they missed almost every shot! They should have spread the three ships out in a triangle and LET the big beast pass between them, peppering it the entire way...all the while the stations weapons could pound it to bits.

Nah. The ship just had too many main characters aboard. No fire control system can deal with this amount of plot armor.

Also, they're in space, they have all options of 3 dimensional maneuvering available to them and they just line up in a column like neat little ducks waiting tobe hit.

I believe they actually did manage to land some hits on it. It at least appears like the Franklin got two hits on the Warden before it was damaged. The discrepancy probably comes from the fact that the Warden didn’t really care about taking damage and so had no reason to disengage, whilst the Sheridan and Franklin did... And of course the space station bungled their shot because Johnny hesitated due to the presence of his two childhood friends on board.

Didn't you see that truly breathtaking evasive maneuver the ship made after they fired? It must have moved at least 1/10000 of a mile, slightly to the left and up. It's incredible that the station was even close to hitting them when it can perform such grace-full high g maneuvers!!!

@@wilmersandstrom2826 still the bug was better at aiming than any of the humans. it was literally a mirror match between same class ships plus humans had two extra frigates and a spacestation and still lost to a screaming bug XD XD

Crispin Julius K actually liked the animated movies. It steps towards the novels a bit more with the power armor. Traitor of mars got closer but still no where near the power level of the novel sadly

@@gregoreder8205 If they were to attempt pincer attack, they would have still missed, because of plot armor. And then they would have still been destroyed by John A. Warden's side turrets. There is no sense in attacking it from any directions other than bottom and rear. Therefore, it would have been prudent for smaller ships to quickly accelerate and dive underneath the John A. Warden, then slow down and execute the loop, while making a few shots, then coming to new heading (i.e. making 180 turn through vertical axis) and chasing the enemy ship down, firing at it from safety of its weapons' blind zone. With small ships doing that, Franklin should have charged head-on. The John A. Warden would have had to either correct its course to hit smaller ships that were flanking it, thus suffering accuracy penalty and (likely) missing its shots at the Franklin, or it would have stayed on target and allowed smaller ships to flank and destroy itself. BUT! If this tactic were used, then safety of L-6 base could not be guaranteed. And we all know what happened IN HINDSIGHT. If we were facing that situation first time ourselves, safety of L-6 base would have been a priority and we wouldn't have had any viable alternative than changing head on, expecting 3:1 numerical advantage to ensure victory.

Shaftoe But all of it’s guns are not facing the front and it was shown that even to the side of the John A. Warden that it could easily take out the fast attack ships. While I do disagree with their attack here, your’s honestly wouldn’t be much better because unlike before the main weapons can all focus on the Franklin while the other weapons easily take out the flanking Fast attack ships which are accurate as hell

@@theenclave6254 There's also the factor of time. These aren't fighters that can maneuver on a dime, these are warships, which require very deliberate maneuvering to get your weapons on target, and that takes time to accomplish. The JAW popped out of a wormhole very close to the station, and the ships were originally moving into a position to get visual communication with it, or board it. By the time they realized what was really going on, it was too late to maneuver into a proper attack profile, and they had to charge and hope for the best.

Try firing explosive guns in a close range. Or specifically try shooting a RPG into a wall right in front of you.

Well that ship is huge, shooting it down close to the planet's atmosphere will turn it into something that could end life on their planet.. But yeah I see your point death of millions is better than billions.

Plus, the bugs managed to adjust course and dodge the first volley... If they do that again, you could end up blasting a nice sized hole into the Earth.

@mandellorian not a bad idea but it was already to close to the planets orbit i bet even if they manage to damage or even make it explode wouldn't it still go on entering the planets atmosphere as a giant flaming ship or debris? Whatever it'll end the same anyway.

@@crunchyoats1862 Funny enough, lasers are not likely to be used as weapons in space because they are very easily defeated by simple clouds of gasses. High velocity projectiles, however, are almost impossible to stop. If you ever saw the show The Expanse its actually very physically accurate, I think some or all of the producers are astrophysicists and they explain this is why they designed the weapons the way they did. Just a fun tidbit :)

@@laytonmiller5865 the expanse does use lasers as weapons though, tightbeam communications lasers can cut through ships and it's a significant plot point in the third season of the tv show.

They legit all group up and charge straight on to the bigger ship. Not even trying to flank or dodge, just good ol mindless charge. Not to mention they missed all their shots, or either the bigger ship is invincible. Seems like they just made humans incompetent for the sake of plot.

The John A. Warden wasn't "the bigger ship" compared to the Franklin. Both are ships of the same class. They have powerful fixed beam cannons at the front, and rows of seemingly equally powerful weapons in turret mounts at each side. However, smaller ships that supported the Franklin only have beam cannons capable of firing forward. Given the velocity at which the John A. Warden was approaching the L-6 base, it was imperative to destroy it as soon as possible - to avoid extensive damage to the base, either from ramming or incoming debris. This is why all 3 Federation ships immediatelly charged it head-on, as opposed to spending time to strafe into the enemy's blind spots. It WAS a feasible thing to do, especially given 3:1 numerical advantage. If not for plot armor of main characters, the Federation would have shot it down. But due to plot requirements, they missed literally every time - all of them, even the L-6 base. It's an impossible scenario, exactly like launching a proton torpedo at 90 degrees angle down Death Star thermal exhaust port, or failing to hit an enemy at point blank range with 90% success chance in XCOM. Federation crews did everything right and still lost. The ONLY error in Feds' tactics that I see is the fact that the Franklin did not attempt to circle back and shoot the John A. Warden with its powerful broadside turrets.

They're doing exactly what the ground forces did in the movie :P.

better yet, have your single "heavily armed" station with it's long range weapons be blocked from shooting by those 3 ships then wait until absolute minimum distance to open fire only for those turreted weapons aiming at a huge target moving in a direct burn towards your home miss. worth it to see the confused look of the aliens as they fly right by.

Well they made bridge of station like glass observation tower. Very practical in space. Hollywood love this trope but in space nothing is done by looking from the window.

Look at the bug's ships.. all it's guns seem like they are fixed foward and can't turn. The bugs weren't aiming.. its the humans that got in front of the guns XD

Rapid fire bolts would be great for point defense/close in defense, like anti-missle, anti-fighter defense and beams for ship-to-ship combat

@@chrismc410 true. But rapid fire bolts would be very inefficient and overly complex for a laser system. Bolts would be best left to solid projectiles. Or plasma or particle beam segments.

@@scailliet might as well use conventional artillery too. As one astronaut shown, a Glock or any modern handgun that uses fixed ammunition will function in a vacuum. So if small arms will work in space, there's no reason why their larger bretheren wouldn't work as well, so long as metallic cartridge types are used. The powder bags that 8-inch and larger naval guns use might be an issue. No sealed oxidizer like there is with metallic cartridges
