Many do. The problem I think is that actual war propaganda and this movie aren't far removed. If you're easily distracted by Denise Richards pretty face you can see the film as a movie about young people rescuing the world.

I saw this movie when i was 8 in the movies. my dad took me twice because he noticed me having my eyes closed the first time xD I used to love it for the creepyness and the huge instect bashing. I used to love those old black and white giant ant monster movies aswell. Now as an adult I find this movie even better because now I see the satire of the third reich in it. So many people disagree though... I also like the first Independece Day for what it is. People disagree with me there aswell... saying its a patriotic USA jerkoff saving the world kinda movie. juiweiYang2000 You should read the book, it addresses that problem. They've fused Infantry and Armour roles into one, and basically made powered exoskeletons. They can get around the battlefield quicker than any modern motorised/mechanised infantry force and that's why they are known as the "Mobile Infantry". The fleet provides their artillery (by firing ordnance from orbit), transport and close air support. In other words, tanks, motorized transport, artillery and even the traditional infantryman are all obsolete in Starship Troopers. The film omits all of this, and it looks stupid because of it. But it is one hell of a quotable film, hahaha.

Patrick Bateman Good thing they explain it in the book too. Because, in recent year the military experiment letting women serve in front line infantry units and it was a disastrous, because front line infantry frequently require for soldiers to be able to carry at least 20 kg equipment into battle and march for miles. And it turns out, the women biology design cannot carried so much for long period of time, disregards to the amount of training. Many female soldiers despite specially trained for it, after only a few days, suffer health problem including crack in ovary, some afterwards suffer from infertility, spinal problem that would last for life etc, after it the US army shut the project down and decide only men can serve in infantry. That is why all front line army infantry units only use men. Women serve in all branches of the defence force including carvery, but they never serve in infantry.

The first one to die was their commanding officer. And of course it's not just 3 guys that died. We just saw the three soldiers that got killed who were in Rico's platoon. And you haven't remembered correctly. They got the order to retreat through the radio so the battle was going much worse on the rest of the front.

That asteroid just happen to get caught by the gravity of a nearby star and got slingshot towards Earth. It was pretty much impossible for the bugs to shot an asteroid so accurately from where they were and for that asteroid to travel all those hundreds of lightyears towards Earth within a short amount of time without FTL. It was all propaganda to allow the war to happen in a way that depicted the bugs as evil inuniverse. As for the book, it was actually a war for planets hence why no orbital nukes. Many of the hives were underground so any nukes they did use, had to be used on foot and in a much more controlled manner to avoid destroying the planet. Both sides also didn't hate each other either. Neither Humans or the bugs were xenophobic or anything and both had alien allies. Humans in fact were part of a galactic council or sorts. In the words of the book "It was just unfortunate that two very stubborn races were after the same real estates."

Unfortunately General Melchett was appointed Commander in Chief of the troops and ships in Starship Troopers. The decision was made after reviewing how the General dealt with the death of his pigeon and it was decided he was not at all sane so he was put in charge of fighting bugs, where they thought he would be harmless, this decision was made before the bug war even started and even before they knew the bugs existed.

The actual reason why was because of overpopulation on Earth at that time and so they needed a reason to recruit so many people into the military and hence the quote "More meat for the grinder" they had shitty armour and weapons so as to kill as many soldiers as possible to contain the overpopulation crisis and various other reasons

Considering the movie is from 1998 I'd say the CGI is amazing. It made use of CGI and scale-models very well. That is somewhat of a lost art form now in the age of CGI. The sad thing is, as advanced as CGI is today, it STILL doesn't look nearly as good as the CGI/scale model effects combo.

legoharry100 Interesting reasoning but what I find conflicting is that it's apparently more difficult to produce handheld energy weapons that can drop a bug fast than it is to master the concept of space travel (while also developing seemingly easy warp drive technology). At the very least, the MI could have used taken cues from our present-day military such as using gatling guns (ahem, the GE M134), flame throwers, UAV drones (for surveillance & attack), and even the armored mech suits the MI used in the original 1959 novel in which the movie is based.

Great examples of Predator, the LHC, and the engine room of the 2009 Enterprise to illustrate power constraints and scale dimensions. But I was thinking of not so much putting all the strain on the soldier. For example with the M134, I agree the power requirement and ammo required would be an issue which is why in today’s military, they’re found on transport and attack support vehicles such as the UH-60 Blackhawk, MH-6 Little Bird, A-10 Warthog (a way bigger gatling gun), etc. So the idea is that the MI would have tremendous suppression fire support as well as a potential transport method (besides the dropship). With the Han Solo blaster energy issue, I don’t think it has to be a pure laser energy weapon to put a bug down hard. I was thinking of an assault rifle that has capabilities similar to Judge Dredd’s Lawgiver (Incendiary, Armor Piercing, High Explosive, etc.) which creates a force multiplier for each MI soldier. Or even going simpler, perhaps have the same rifle that doesn’t seem like a peashooter requiring 4-5 MI soldiers all firing at the same time at the same target to have a cumulative damage effect on a bug. Off the top of my head, I can think of a Starship Troopers version of the existing AA-12 shotgun, Beowulf .50 cal (in an M4 platform), M320 Grenade Launcher (replacing the aging M203) that can be slung under a rifle, and the M41A Pulse Rifle from Aliens.

Foot soldiers are just infantry, but they're called 'Mobile Infantry' in the book, because they were basically a mobile mechanized infantry squadron. I guess it was easier to make thousands of uniforms and pay thousands of extras than it was to add small mechs. Even though the book makes far more sense, I still prefer the battles in the movies, because it's pretty brutal.

I mean, for one, they send them in, they land, then fire up those things, but later on, they nuke the area first, why not just glass the planet to begin with? I mean, if we can fly to planets galaxies away, i THINK we could have the common sense to bomb the shit out of a basic LAND BASED enemy, but then again, it was not scripted to happen that way. :3

Exactly what I thought when I first watched this, sure the battle was a little cool but the strategy and tactics. Yea I don't even know where to begin there. If i was in command I would just order the ships to start dropping bombs, and plus even if you wanted to later on colonize the planet you could just drop down powerful non radiation type bombs. I'm sure by the time we can travel across the galaxy we have something more powerful then just TNT bombs.

yes ours seem to be much more effective than this group of misfits. The US would just the nuke the planet, given that we had the firepower like what the Federation Armed Services has. Instead of sending a million soldiers to certain death on a foreign planet we'd just rain death from above.
