This video I go through some of my favorite ways for initiating control in the guard. From the start of the match it’s important that you always have a game plan the first step is your initial contact grips and entry guards the you play and then build off from those positions. You need multiple options as your opponents can stand in many different ways which requires different options as the grip you prefer will not always be available.

So many good options. No excuses on getting some type of grip. Thank you for this.

Good stuff. Bonus points for having an assistant who's brave enough to try to bring back the "Flock of Seagulls" hair style.

Awesome stuff as usual Jon, your videos have really helped my guard. How about a video on the opposite objective; all the different ways of attacking the seated guard?

Professor, I've started using the lasso as an initial entanglement and I really like it. I have noticed your proclivity to the shallow lasso and you stated why in this video. I feel like I have less control, particularly of really strong opponents if I go shallow. I am starting think some of this is due to me lacking confidence in my offense from this position?

As a 58 yo 4 stripe white belt who lacks the speed flexibility and cognitive ability to just move from one guard Position to the next against the average 25 yo professor jon Reminds me why I need to find a porch w a rocking chair and yell at kids to get off my lawn while holding a shotgun 👴🏻 However,

Enjoyed this video and think that its an underestimated aspect of any guard. Can you please make more videos on what grips work best for entering each guard?
