Most people insulating the floor aren't in Alaska, so they don't mind putting in narrow boards on the inside/bottom of the floor joists, and setting plywood strips on those. It takes longer, but it keeps you off your back... But up there, you gotta insulate as best you can, so crawling underneath the thing is necessary at some point. It's cool that you did it now, when you can still lift the floor up. That way there are no gaps or cuts in the plywood. It's also worth remarking that some people prefer to use RockWool (or equivalent) in floors, especially in off-grid locations, first because sometimes water spills on the floor and soaks down into it, and second because the mice don't like it. But it costs a little more. Something to consider, depending on your goals.
Hi Matt, so glad that you were able to give Steve and Tess a hand with their cabin. I really like those two. The question about whether they are offgrid or not. I was born in Alaska 76 years ago and back before this offgrid term was developed by modern day homesteaders, it was you either lived remote or you lived on the road system. That was that. If they don't put a driveway in they will remain remote. Myself, Steve and Tess have something in Common, I worked as a Winter caretaker for remote fishing lodges for 30 some years and I am anxious to hear their stories and watch their videos. By the way, Dick Proenneke was a friend of mine when I lived and worked out on Lake Clark.
Love your dog's name Norman it's my dad's first and my middle name..... Love the channel you and Timmy are two of my favorites.. Thank you so much for sharing
I’m 70 year old princess and love watching your videos !!!! Never been to Alaska and maybe I’ll get the chance !! You 3 worked together great !!! I’m a dog lover and love Norm but why didn’t he get a burger ?
Great video Matt and so nice of you returning the favor and helping them Love to see Norman he's so cute Thanks for sharing and love the music as well. Good luck on the new build and I would have to agree that's definitely off grid lol Love from Ohio
porcupines will chew through that plywood if they want to. should get some metal mesh for the underside of the cabin to keep them from coming up through the floor
Congrats on 100k! Speaking of off grid definitions, I saw someone comment somewhere recently that if you have internet access you're not really off grid. For some reason that made me irrationally irritated.
Off the grid to me is just away from the grind, cities and excessive amounts of people. I have 40 acres in Wyoming I just bought and I'm about to build my forever off the grid cabin, 16x24 with a loft. Love all these videos and the peaceful calm music in the background
1x2 Furring strips with 3/16” ply glued down and tacked to the strips, then add insulation. That’s what we do, I’m sure there is easier faster methods such as what you guys since it was a small footprint. Still faster and just as efficient as the way I do it, but I’ll remember how yall did it when I have a small project!
Hey, what a coincidence! I’m a subscriber to your channel and also started watching theirs a few weeks ago. This is cool because he didn’t really show this part of the build in his vlogs. They’re a neat couple.
ive been a builder now for over 30 years and one thing ive never understood is why people treat walls , floor, and roof/ceilings different as far as vapour, insulation and venting... at least you got the vapour barrior too most ppl forget that even..... nice build
My wife and I live in a very mountainous area of north central Washington state, 5 miles from a small town and 30 miles from a small city. We’ll be going to north west MT the end of May to look at property to buy and build a log house so that after my wife retires our house will be finished. We’ll sell our mountain home here in WA for our retirement home. I figure between eating fish, elk, deer and other wildlife we’ll be ok for our meat. We will have to grow our vegetables because the area we’re interested in, the closest Costco is 100 miles away. We will have to drill a well and install a septic system, but we have 12 years to do it all.
Good vid and music Matt. Teamwork sure helps one heck of a lot. Like you I would really appreciate a few more hands at times. Tough being a one man shoe. The cabin looks great. True plumb and square. The walls bowing out won't hurt. Diagonal center braces would help that. The bottom floor joist cover for the insulation. Not a bad job on it. Fast and it's sealed up as good as any other method. Seen it done a lot of ways some much more labor and costly. This build will be good experience for them later on. One thing they will have an efficient home come winter. I'll check out their channel. We met them before. Next time

Out of curiosity do they not have “legal” access to drive to the property, or it is too rough, too much snow, or just no official driveway? Always tough moving everything there by hand
Hey Matt, I am trying to figure out what size door gasket is used on the Drolet El Dorado woodstove which I believe is the same one you have, do you have any idea which size it is? I think it might be 5/8 inch but I can’t find proof anywhere.
@@alaskacabinadventures I talked to Drolet customer service today and they told me the actual size for that stove is 1/4" x 1/2" part # ac06100 so you probably can't use an aftermarket one that is just round
I like the idea of having plywood on the underside of the floor and have seen it done a few different ways. The way you've done this looks great! I opted for a more unique way. It helped to have lots of friends around. ru-vid.com/show-UCzoJFNfNAl4nrohkaw7nCMg
